Diana: "Hi Mary, What are you


Doing?"
Mary: "Hi Diana. I'm filling out a
job application."
Diana: "Are you finished with
school already?"
Mary: "No. I have one more
semester, but it would be great to
have a job lined up."
The present tense is more common in
writing.
Speaking in the present tense is used primarily to tell someone what
you are currently doing.
It is very common to have a conversation using the present tense when
you run into somebody or when you make or receive a phone call.

• Man: Where do you live?
Woman: I live downtown with my family.
Man: Nice, do you live in an apartment or house?
Woman: I live in a house, but we need more space.
Man: Do you want to move?
Woman: Yes, we want to move to the countryside.

Future Tense
• talking about our dreams and aspirations
• Guessing something
• Telling someone what we will do tomorrow
• Usually starts with pronoun/noun + will/shall

Will , Shall
• Will is commonly use in conversations to express the future
• In the past, ‘shall’ was often used as an alternative to ‘will’, and you
can find many examples of ‘shall’ in famous literary works.
• "Shall’ to form questions with ‘I’ and ‘we’, especially in British
English.

Verb +To be
Verb + to
The “to be” is a verb used to describe something or someone.
• I like to be at my house.
• I think I'm going to be sick.
TO is part of a phrasal verb or a verb + preposition combination. A
phrasal verb is something like "look forward to", "confess to", etc.
• I'm going to go home in an hour.
• I am going to meet John

• B: I think I'll go if I have the money.
• A: What are your plans tonight?
• B: I think I'll watch the soccer game tonight
• A: Who do you think will win?
• B: I love to see Green Team win.

Past Tense
• Whenever you meet a friend, you always tell each other what you
have been doing recently.
• Questions start with did ex. Did you finish your report?
• Commonly use in novels.

• A: I'm glad you like it. How was school today?
• B: It was fun. I had to study really hard but I enjoyed my class.
• A: Great! I'm glad you had a wonderful day.

Story
• Reading short stories in English is a great way to improve your
language level.
• You will improve your reading fluency and comprehension and
develop your vocabulary.
• A relax way to learn English.

The Foolish Donkey
• A salt seller used to carry the salt bag on his donkey to the market
every day.
• On the way they had to cross a stream. One day the donkey suddenly
tumbled down the stream and the salt bag also fell into the water.
The salt dissolved in the water and hence the bag became very light
to carry. The donkey was happy.
• Then the donkey started to play the same trick every day.

The Foolish Donkey
• The salt seller came to understand the trick and decided to teach a
lesson to it. The next day he loaded a cotton bag on the donkey.
• Again it played the same trick hoping that the cotton bag would be
still become lighter.
• But the dampened cotton became very heavy to carry and the donkey
suffered. It learnt a lesson. It didn’t play the trick anymore after that
day, and the seller was happy.

The Greedy Lion
• It was an incredibly hot day, and a lion was feeling very hungry.
• He came out of his den and searched here and there. He could find
only a small hare. He caught the hare with some hesitation. “This
hare can’t fill my stomach” thought the lion.
• As the lion was about to kill the hare, a deer ran that way. The lion
became greedy. He thought;
• “Instead of eating this small hare, let me eat the big deer.”

• He let the hare go and went behind the deer. But the deer had
vanished into the forest. The lion now felt sorry for letting the hare off.

• Agent: Thank you for calling Cloudston Family Medicine. This is Angela speaking. How
can I help you?
• Caller: Hi, my name is Christine Matthews and I need to need to get a refill on my
prescription.
• Agent: Alright, Christine. Are you a patient of ours?
• Caller: Yes, I am.
• Agent: Great. Who is your doctor?
• Caller: I see Dr. Brenner.
• Agent: Ok. So you’ll need to have your pharmacy fax over a prescription refill request. Do
you have a pen to write our fax number down?
