LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 5

REPRODUCTION: THE CONTINUITY OF LIFE

Asexual Reproduction occurs when there is only one parent that gives rise to an
offspring which has the identical genetic makeup of the parent. It occurs in most single
celled organisms such as bacteria and some multicellular organisms such as fungi and
some plants.

Sexual Reproduction involves the combining of genetic information from two

parents to produce a new organism that is a combination of both parents. It occurs in
most complex organisms.

1) Complete the following table comparing asexual and sexual reproduction.

Asexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction

Number of parents Only one parent Two parents

Similarity to the parents Identical Genetic Makeup Combination of Two

Parents
Complexity of organism Single Cell and some Complex Organisms
that uses this method Multicellular Organism

Example of an organism Bacteria, Fungi, Ginger, Human, Animals & Flowers

that uses this method Onion, etc.

2) Complete the following chart below to answer the questions.

Name Type of Reproduction What happens? Example
(Asexual or Sexual)

Binary Fission Asexual Reproduction An organism duplicates Bacteria

its DNA
Budding Asexual Reproduction An organism produces a Yeast
bud (small bump) that
will grow and break
when its fully developed.
Fragmentation Asexual Reproduction An organism breaks a Starfish
part that will regenerate
over time.
Internal Sexual Reproduction Fusion of male and Human
Fertilization female gamete (sexual
intercourse)

External Sexual Reproduction Male and female release Frogs

Fertilization discharge on a particular
place.

Vegetative Asexual Reproduction A transfer of a particular Herbs

Propagation plant part to produce
another. Methods such
as budding, cutting,
running, grafting etc.
Parthenogenesis Asexual Reproduction A female can reproduce Insects
without a male mate.

takes place.

4) Name two advantages to sexual reproduction and two disadvantages. Explain

your answer.
ADV: Produce a new unique offspring and adaptive to nature through generation.
DIS: Can’t be done individually and female is reliant to male.
A uniqueness of a new offspring is heavily reliant in a two parent.

5) Name two advantages to asexual reproduction and two disadvantages. Explain

your answer.
ADV: Can be done individually and no reason to stop reproduction.
DIS: Too much identical might not be adaptive in nature and no species can be discovered.
Good for consistency, Bad for long term change in nature.

6) Classify the following as either Sexual or Asexual Reproduction. Give the specific
type if Asexual.

Fragmentation (Asexual) a) A small piece of a cactus breaks off the plant, falls to the ground, and begins
to grow.
Internal Fertilization (Sexual) b) Pollen from a male poplar tree fertilizes sex cells on a female poplar tree.
External Fertilization (Sexual) c) Two earthworms each produce sperm and eggs and fertilize each other.
Fragmentation (Asexual) d) A fltworm is cut in half and grows into two flatworms.
