Gujarat aims to use this powerful game to bring changes in society.

GCA represents four important committees that


include BCCI work committee, Tour and program committee, Finance committee and Junior cricket committee. Indian
Premier League (IPL) matches will be organized under GCA in 2010 and further developments in Cricket aim to set
Gujarat on higher scale in the field of Sports.

Operational as an Autonomous organization of the Government known as SAG since May 1993,
Sports in Gujarat see a new light as SAG enables Gujarat school children and sports persons in
five main national forums, namely :

SGFI Games (School Games Federation of India)


National Rural Games (organised by the Sports Authority of India)
National Women’s Sports Festival (organised by the Sports Authority of India)
Subroto Mukherjee Cup for football (organised by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education
Society sponsored by the Indian Air Force Sports Control Board)
The Jawaharlal Nehru Cup for hockey (organised by J. L. Nehru Hockey Tournament
Society).
Sports Authority of Gujarat plays a vital role in identifying and set activities that is aimed at creating interest and
opportunities of participation in different games in various, including, rural areas.

Gujarat also focus in Rural Olympics as 2008 Tarnetar Gramin Olympics saw a new light in the direction. Rural
Olympics is expected to be held in March 2010 at Tarnetar, Devgadh Baria and Ahwa Dangs Dist. Scholarships for
Women participants will be awarded to encourage Women players.

Complex for indoor and outdoor games are taking shape at Gandhinagar and in Rural areas too; keeping in mind, the
long term effects on health and fitness of the people and enhance performance of sportsman.

In Gujarat, the largest Indoor Cricket arena is being constructed at Koba, Gandhinagar. The Indoor stadium shall be
totally air conditioned and will be built at a cost of Rs 100 crore. When complete it shall be India largest stadium with
four courts, eight floors a fitness center, food court shopping complex and other world class facilities. Sports
enthusiast from Gujarat will have excellent sporting and fitness facilities with areas set aside for Indoor cricket, beach
volleyball and beach soccer.

Kankaria Lake front development is operational as Recreation center with facilities to cater to families. It has Train
ride, boating, zoo, Botannical garden, Museum and fish aquarium and a host of other recreational facilities.

The beaches in Gujarat and rural areas are being transformed for recreation and tourist attractions. Water Sports,
Sun bathing, Star gazing, Bird watching, exploring marine life, cruise surfs and meditation are other recreational
areas where people rejuvenate their lives.

Religious places and Tourist destinations in Gujarat have a unique traditional Getaway engaging in cultural and
Spiritual experience. Many places have heritage background with scenic beauty, camel rides and traditional
accommodation in tents and huts, enjoying nature.

Overview of the Sports Policy 2022-27


 The objective of Sports Policy 2022-27 is to change the sports scenario in Gujarat.
 An equal emphasis has been laid on promoting the sports talent in Gujarat and also
creating world-class sports infrastructure across the state.
 Through this policy, the Gujarat government aims to encourage and promote sports
culture by organizing national and international tournaments and giving prizes to all
sportspersons. The government also wants to conduct amateur and professional sports
leagues and implement efficient sports governance in Gujarat.
About the High-Performance Centers (HPCs)
 The Sports Policy 2022-27 envisages establishing four new High-Performance Centers
(HPCs) for elite athletes, which provide training facilities of international standards.
 One of the new HPCs will be specifically for the training purposes of the para-athletes.
 To provide personalized training and development, HPCs will have a specialized team
of physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists, strength coaches, and sports analysts.
 Apart from HPCs, eight centers of excellence will also be established. The participation
of the Private sector will be encouraged in establishing both HPCs and centers of
excellence.
Other highlights of the policy
 The policy lays down a three-tier “elite athlete development program.”
 Huge cash awards and incentives are also promised for sportspersons.
 A sports incubator will also be established.
 Data analytics and sports science will be introduced in the curriculum of Sports
University.
 The Sports Authority of Gujarat will be the nodal agency to implement the policy.
Benefits to allied sectors
The creation of infrastructure facilities will not only benefit athletes, but also those in the
allied sectors. The policy also proposes to establish an industrial cluster comprising
companies that manufacture sports goods. Thus, it will give a boost to Gujarat’s
manufacturing sector.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports implements the following schemes for development of sports
in the country, including Gujarat: (i) Khelo India Scheme; (ii) Assistance to National Sports
Federations; (iii) Special Awards to Winners in International Sports Events and their Coaches; (iv)
National Sports Awards; (v) Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons; (vi) Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay
National Sports Welfare Fund; (vii) National Sports Development Fund; and (viii) Running Sports
Training Centres through Sports Authority of India. Details of the above schemes are available in the
public domain on the websites of this Ministry and the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Funds are allocated and released Scheme-wise and not State-wise in this Ministry. During the last
three years, ₹ 4,694.92 crore were allocated and ₹ 4,590.89 crore released under the various sports
development schemes of this Ministry.

Under the Khelo India Scheme, 16 sports academies have been accredited in the State of Gujarat,
wherein, 38 Khelo India Athletes are being provided sports training. Further, SAI runs one National
Centre of Excellence at Gandhinagar, where 175 sportspersons are being trained. A total of 74
Khelo India Athletes (34 male and 40 female) have been selected and are being trained in the State
of Gujarat.
