GRADE 7/8
Module 3 - WEEK 3

Welcome to the world of Hairdressing!

This module covers 1 lesson that a Grade 7 / Grade 8 Technology and Livelihood Education
(TLE) student like you ought to understand.
As shown below, the Lesson is directed to the attainment of one learning outcome:
Lesson 3: Basic Hair Care Services
Your success in this exploratory course on Hairdressing is shown in your ability to perform
the performance standards found in learning outcome.

BASIC HAIR CARE SERVICES

Nowadays more people are attracted towards hair salon because of the services and the
facilities provided by them. They will use a team of highly qualified and trained hairdressers for
providing the hairdressing services for people. Usually women will go to the hair salons but in recent
times more men are approaching the hair salon to get different style and hair coloring services.

Hair and Scalp Treatment

Scalp treatments unclog the hair follicles, releasing
natural conditioning oils and help relieve a dry scalp and
remove all those nasty dry flakes falling all over your shirt and
pillow. Plus, they stimulate blood flow in the head and neck
area so nutrients can better reach the scalp and nourish your
hair.
A healthy scalp should be clean and well stimulated. To
attain this, give a scalp massage. A scalp massage is most
effective when given continuously or regularly once a week for
a normal scalp and more frequently for those with scalp disorders. This is given side by side with
treatment by a dermatologist. If abrasions are present in the scalp, stop the massage.

Hair Perming
A permanent wave, commonly called a perm or permanent, is a hairstyle consisting of waves or curls
set into the hair. The curls may last a number of months, hence the name. Perms may be applied
using thermal or chemical means.

Hair Coloring
Hair coloring works by coating each strand with color (non-permanent color) or by
penetrating each hair cuticle, entering the hair cortex, and bonding with the hair (permanent color).
While non-permanent hair color can be shampooed out eventually, permanent color, as the name
suggests, permanently colors the hair. However, since hair constantly grows, the color will ultimately
grow out.

Artificial Hair Coloring

In general, hair coloring is simply the application of artificial color pigments to change the color of
your hair. There are four types of hair color: Temporary, Semi-permanent, Demi-permanent and
Permanent.
 Temporary: A temporary color will stain or coat the outside of the hair shaft, and as the
name implies, it will wash out in one or two shampoos. We use temporary coloring in our
custom blended shampoos and conditioners to maintain or "refresh" your hair color between
regular color treatments.

 Semi-Permanent: Like temporary coloring, semi-permanent coloring is a short-term option

that can add greater depth to hair. It provides a slight blend with the existing color, but may
not thoroughly cover the existing color. Semi-permanent hair coloring will last a lot longer
than temporary coloring, but washes out between four and six shampoos.

 Demi-Permanent: This type of coloring is designed to deposit color for subtle changes, but
will not lighten the hair. Demi-permanent color will provide some coverage for someone with
a small percentage of gray, but it may not offer complete coverage for someone with
moderate to mostly gray hair. When coloring your hair with demi-permanent color, it will last
four to six weeks.

 Permanent Coloring: Coloring your hair with permanent hair coloring generally gets the
best results. It is flexible to lighten hair up to three levels from sheer coverage to complete
coverage with more intense shades. It is also the most durable with coverage lasting five to
six weeks.

Hair Cutting
- is the process of cutting, tapering, texturizing and thinning using any hair cutting tools in order to
create a shape.

Some cutting techniques

Scissors-over-comb method is performed with the stylist
holding a comb in what would normally be his/her “holding”
hand. The comb is used to elevate segments of the hair which
are then cut by the scissors which are held in the cutting hand.
The stationary blade (the lower blade) is positioned so as to be
parallel to the comb. This technique is ideal for blending and
cutting very short hairstyles without using clippers.
Free-hand cutting is just what it sounds like. The stylist uses
his/her scissors to cut the hair without holding it in the other
hand’s fingers or using any other tool to hold the hair in place.
Thinning hair with thinning scissors removes the thickness or
bulk from the hair, not length.
Hair Bleaching
Hair bleaching is a chemical hair dye technique that strips the color of your hair strands. Bleaching
begins with an alkaline agent that opens up the hair cuticle. Next comes the oxidative agent that
penetrates the hair cortex and dissolves the hairs natural melanin (your hair's natural color). The
longer you leave this agent in your hair, the lighter in color your hair becomes. Your hair can either
lighten to a yellow or reddish tone depending on your natural hair tone and then eventually lighten to
platinum blonde.
