RESEARCH PROPOSAL
RESEARCH III
WEEK 1 – MELC 1
RESEARCH PLAN
oA RESEARCH PROPOSAL or RESEARCH PLAN
serves as your guide to help you focus and
define what it is that you want to do in your
research problem (Royce, 2009).
oA Research Proposal must be SMART.
SMART
Characteristics of a good research proposal:
S – SPECIFIC & WELL DEFINED
M – MEASURABLE
A – ATTAINABLE
R – REALISTIC
T – TIME-BOUND
PARTS OF A RESEARCH PLAN
RESEARCH TITLE
A. RATIONALE
◦ Include a brief synopsis of the background that
supports your research problem and explain why this
research is important and if applicable, explain any
societal impact of your research.
PARTS OF A RESEARCH PLAN
B. RESEARCH QUESTION(S), HYPOTHESIS(ES),
ENGINEERING GOAL(S), EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
◦ How is this based on the rationale described above?
PARTS OF A RESEARCH PLAN
C. MATERIALS & METHODS
◦ Describe the following in detail:
ØProcedures: Detail all procedures and experimental design including
methods for data collection, and when applicable, the source of data
used. Describe only your project. Do not include work done by mentor or
others.
ØRisk and Safety: Identify any potential risks and safety precautions
needed.
ØData Analysis: Describe the procedures you will use to analyze the
data/results.
PARTS OF A RESEARCH PLAN
C. BIBLIOGRAPHY
◦ List major references (e.g. science journal articles,
books, internet sites) from your literature review. If you
plan to use vertebrate animals, one of these references
must be an animal care reference.
RESEARCH TITLE MUST BE
APPROVED FIRST BEFORE YOU
CAN START ON YOUR
RESEARCH PLAN
RESEARCH TITLE
RESEARCH TITLE
•The most basic and important aspect of a research
paper.
•Writing a research paper title requires some serious
thoughts.
•Is the basis of how many people will read it.
RESEARCH TITLE
A good research paper title:
§condenses the paper’s content
§captures the readers’ attention
§differentiates the paper from other papers of the
same subject area.
RESEARCH TITLE TIPS (Sneha Kulkarni)
1. Keep it simple, brief and attractive: Example:
• The primary function of a title is to Avoid:
provide a precise summary of the paper’s
content. “An effect of Drug XYZ on
• Use active verb instead of complex noun- muscular contraction in snails of
based phrases, and avoid unnecessary Achatina fulcia species”
details.
• A good title for a research paper is
typically around 10-15 words long (max Better:
25). A lengthy title may seem unfocused “Drug XYZ induces muscular
and take the readers’ attention away from contraction in Achatina fulcia snails”
an important point.
RESEARCH TITLE TIPS (Sneha Kulkarni)
2. Use appropriate descriptive words: Example:
• A good research paper title should contain Avoid:
keywords used in the manuscript and should
define the nature of the study. “The effects of drug A on schizophrenia
• Think about terms people would use to search patients in a study of multicenter
for your study and include them in your title. mixed group”

Better:
“Psychosocial effects of drug A on
schizophrenia patients: A multicenter
randomized controlled trial”
RESEARCH TITLE TIPS (Sneha Kulkarni)
3. Avoid abbreviations and jargon: Example:
• Known abbreviations such as AIDS, NATO, Avoid:
and so on can be used in the title.
However, other lesser-known or specific “MMP expression profiles cannot
abbreviations and jargon that would not distinguish between normal and
be immediately familiar to the readers early osteoarthritic synovial fluid”
should be left out.
Better:
“Matrix Metalloproteinase Protein
expression profiles cannot
distinguish between normal and
early osteoarthritic synovial fluid”
Title Title is simple, Conveys Includes No Remarks

“An effect of Drug XYZ on muscular

“The effects of drug A on schizophrenia

“Psychosocial effects of drug A on

Guidelines in Writing a Good Research Title
1.The title of research usually omits the verb and is only a label or a phrase.
2.The title needs to be very specific. It should identify the variables to be
investigated.
3.The title should be interestingly stimulating.
4.The title should reflect the content of the study
5.Good titles contain as few words as possible, not to exceed 15.
Guidelines in Writing a Good Research Title
6. Use appropriate terms in the title
§ Examples:
ü Bactericides for the control of bacteria
ü Fungicides for the control of fungi
ü Herbicides for the control of weeds
ü Nematicides for the control of nematodes
ü Insecticides for the control insects – These can be Larvicides
(substances that kill larvae) or adulticides (substances that kill
adults)
ü • Molluscicides for the control of slugs and snails
Guidelines in Writing a Good Research Title
7. Avoid using superfluous words
Examples:
v A Study of ……………………………………
v An Experimental Study of ….……………
v A Scientific Investigation of ……………..
v A Preliminary Study ………………………
v An Analysis of ………………………………
Guidelines in Writing a Good Research Title
8. The title should not be conclusive or biased.
9. The title should avoid abbreviations, formulas, and jargon.
10. The title is written as much as possible in one line; when more
than one line, it follows the inverted pyramid form.
