AGHS - Bio - Water Properties Virtual Lab

by Casey Rurode
15 Questions

This assignment will provide you with opportunities to apply water properties to different
video clips. These don't show you why the properties are essential for life but they clearly
demonstrate one of those characteristics that allow life to exist on Earth.

Part 1 - Identifying the Observed Properties

In this section, each option for identifying the chracteristics of water will be used only
one time so select the property that is BEST shown. TWO properties of water will not be
used in this section.

Video #1 - Answer the next few questions about this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0D20Pp0WAc

1. Identify the property of water is BEST shown in this video clip. The astronaut draws
attention to it at the very end of the clip!

evaporation

high specific heat of water

ice expanding

adhesion

surface tension

solvent

cohesion

2. What must be true about human skin if water can stick to it?

skin is nonpolar; it does not have charges

skin is polar; it does not have charges

skin is nonpolar; it has charges

skin is polar; it has charges

Video #2 - Answer the next question about this video.

3. Identify the property of water is BEST shown in this video clip. Which property
allowed the water droplet to behave in this way?

cohesion

evaporation

ice expanding

solvent

high specific heat of water

surface tension

adhesion

Video #3 - Answer the next few questions about this video.

4. Identify the property of water is BEST shown in this video clip when the items
"merge".

adhesion

cohesion

evaporation

high specific heat of water

ice expanding

solvent

surface tension

5. In the merging droplets video, the astronaut says that our observations are due to the
"attracticve forces" between the very large droplets of water (FYI- each droplet is made
up of trillions, or maybe even more, molecules of water). What scientific term describes
this attraction between water molecules?

nonpolar covalent bond

hydrogen bond

polar covalent bond

ionic bond

6. Ultimately, why do molecules of water have the ability to attract one another or stick
together?

In the ionic bonds between oxygen and the hydrogens of one molecule, there is an
unequal sharing of electrons

In the covalent bonds between oxygen and the hydrogens of one molecule, there is an
unequal sharing of electrons

In the hydrogen bonds between oxygen and the hydrogens of one molecule, there is an
unequal sharing of electrons

Video #4 - Answer the next few questions about this video.

7. Identify the property of water is BEST shown in this video clip.

adhesion

solvent
evaporation

ice expanding

cohesion

high specific heat of water

surface tension
8. Dive deeper, which substance can absorb more heat or energy from a surface and why?
Keep in mind, both liquids were tested in identical environments!

rubbing alcohol; it could absorb energy for 1 minute and 15 seconds

water; it could absorb energy for 1 minute and 15 seconds

water; it could absorb energy for 45 seconds

rubbing alcohol; it could absorb energy for 45 seconds

Video #5 - Answer the next few questions about this video.

The outlined content above was added from outside of Formative.

9. Identify the property of water is BEST shown in this video clip of sugar dissolving.

ice expanding

adhesion

surface tension

solvent

cohesion

evaporation
high specific heat of water

10. What must be true about the molecules of sugar given the events of this video?
Recall, on a molecular level, that the water was attracted to the sugar molecules and
separated the sugar.

sugar is polar

sugar is nonpolar

sugar is unique

Video #6 - Answer the next few questions about this video.

The outlined content above was added from outside of Formative.

11. What must be true about the molecules oil given the events of this video?

oil is polar

oil is nonpolar

oil is unique

12. What do you know when you look at the final location of the oil at the end of the
video

oil more dense than water

oil and water have the same density

oil less dense than water

Part 2 - Understanding How These Properties are Helpful for Living Organisms
In this section, you will explain how the requested property of water is helpful for life
The outlined content above was added from outside of Formative.
EXAMPLE: This video deomonstrates why cohesion and adhesion are helpful to life.
Without these properties happening inside of plants to move water from the roots to the
leaves, the plants would die and consumers would not have a source of food. This also
explain how plants lose water/sweat like what was discussed at the end of the EdPuzzle!

13. Explain why water expanding as it freezes is helpful for life. There is more than one
correct answer here!

No credit will be awarded with you do not clearly state how living organisms benefit
from this property!

14. High specific heat is another property of water. This means that it takes a lot of
energy for the temperature of water to change. Explain why this property is important for
life. There is more than one correct answer here!

No credit will be awarded with you do not clearly state how living organisms benefit
from this property!

Part 3 - Understanding How The Properties of Water can do Harm - A Human

Impact Story
In this section, you will explain how the requested property of water is helpful for life
The outlined content above was added from outside of Formative.

In this video we see the danger of water being a universal solvent.

15. A) Explain how water's ability to dissolve substances can be harmful when
humans do everyday activities like throw away a plastic bottle (1 pt). Spiral this
out and explain how one small act can have a larger an unexpected impact on
living organisms or the biosphere as a whole. (1 pt)
