CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In recent years, social media has emerged as the most significant tool for

communication. Due to the existence of social networking, it is possible for individuals to

communicate with each other no matter how far they are apart. As a result, it is simple

for people to exchange data, send messages, establish blogs, and have in-person chats.

Social forums and social media are platforms for direct social interaction with other

people. The worldwide world's economic, political, social, and educational decision-

making.

The role of technology in education has grown significantly. There has been an

upsurge in the use of information and communication technologies in recent decades

(ICT). Furthermore, a variety of network technologies have emerged since the new e-

learning strategy was developed (Swarm et al., 2010). Since most people desire to use

these to increase their knowledge and learn more new abilities, the need for creative

learning approaches has been constantly rising. Today, the use of technology has

become more prevalent in schools and other educational institutions.

Students at institutions in the United States (US) investigated the connection

between their usage of social media (including Skype TM) and academic achievement,

according to Asah and Pinskre (2012). According to the study's findings, using social

media and Skype TM was favorably correlated with life satisfaction and that life

satisfaction and academic performance were positively

1

correlated. The beneficial effects of social media use on how international students

perceive their experiences, which may therefore have a good effect on their academic

performance.

Students are using social media at an unprecedented rate thanks to globalized

forms of communication and the post-pandemic push to employ various social media

platforms for education across subject areas. Despite the enormous opportunities for

sharing thoughts and feelings provided by social media, it's possible that the social

support it offers falls short of meeting students' emotional needs or that the purportedly

positive effects are only temporary. In recent years, several studies have been

conducted to explore the potential effects of social media on students’ affective traits,

such as stress, anxiety, depression, and so on. The present paper reviews the findings

of the exemplary published works of research to shed light on the positive and negative

potential effects of the massive use.

Social networks are utilized by students to interact with their classmates.

Additionally, it is employed throughout academic performances. By accumulating data

and information, the social media platforms assist students in improving their academic

performance and knowledge. Students use a variety of web resources to acquire data

for their assignments (De La Cruz, 2020). The following social media platforms are used

most frequently by students: Messenger (for communication), Wikipedia (for references),

Facebook (for updates), Instagram (for photo sharing), YouTube (for video tutorials), and

many others.

Researchers are starting to look into how social media use affects kids

psychologically. According to Luther and Lancing (2019), social media platforms are the
2

most significant factor in altering people's moods because, when a person is passively

using a social media platform with no apparent purpose, s/he can finally feel that s/he

has changed as a result of the nature of the content viewed. As a result, social media

networks make it simple for the populace to spread both happy and negative emotions

(Luther and Lancing, 2019).

This may become more crucial as kids are observed utilizing social media platforms

more frequently than in the past and as social networking permeates every part of their

lives. Iwamotes and Chen's (2020).

We can lot of changes and development in the field of communication which

generated of smart phones. Regardless to the benefits of such development, there may

be adverse effects of it which cannot be ignored for the future perspectives. These

effects can be evidenced by the time spent by the young generation on phones or social

media which distracts them to the real relationships with friends and family. They feel

more connected with the virtual world rather than real relationship.

The advancement of technology made learning simple for pupils. Smart phone

development, internet accessibility, and a variety of apps made it possible for students to

learn anywhere, at any time. The student's life has been deeply ingrained with social

media (Ryzen and Weston, 2022). It gives pupils the chance to converse, receive

access to all kinds of knowledge, and connect with others (Armindem, 2021). Social

media may also be used to exchange knowledge and ideas and enhance reading

abilities. Nevertheless, despite the clear advantages, academics are growing more

concerned about how excessive usage of all these technologies may have a negative
impact on the quality of social relationships (Kawk, 2000). The advantages of using

social media for

content creators now extend beyond simple social sharing and include reputation

building.

Online connections and interactions between people are now widely available

thanks to social networking sites (SNSs). In the field of web applications, the invention of

social networking websites represents a great technological advancement. Many people

use these websites to link millions of people at once all around the world. According to a

study by Alfrelil et al. (2013), Classmates.com, which was established in 1995, was the

first official social networking site. It was designed to give students a way to connect

socially while or after they finished their degrees (Moradorus, 2015). There has been

research done on the connection between students' use of social media and their

academic achievement. Technology will continue to advance, and change will also

inevitably occur.

Both Martn, (2008) and Lusk, (2010) discuss social media from the same

perspective. For them, using social media of Facebook, Blogs, Twitter, MySpace,

LinkedIn, and other social media sites for conversation and photo sharing as movies.

However, social media use is captured inside internet usage for the purposes of this

study through for communication and idea sharing, use Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter,

Skype, MySpace, as well as Yahoo Messenger. Users' sharing of images and videos.

Utilizing social networking sites more frequently has become a problem in the last few

years, an international phenomenon. What began as a pastime for some computer-

savvy. People from all around the world now regard people as a societal norm and way
of life (Boyd. 2007). adolescents and young these websites have been adopted by adults

in particular as a method to network with their peers, share information. They alter their

personas and highlight their social life (Boyd, 2007). For instance, the usage of social

networking sites,

where connection is mediated by the computer via the Internet, has diminished the true

value of interpersonal engagement, particularly among students who make up the

majority of user’s access. They form or develop groups out of persons who have similar

hobbies and pastimes. As a result of this and the prevalence of social networking sites,

people particularly students are drawn to or enticed to communicate with their friends

online or browse the web instead of completing their schoolwork or reading their notes.

Due to their Internet addiction, many students spend a lot of time on social networking

sites.

The Department of Education (DepEd) is also prohibiting "like-based" outputs on

social media platforms, in which students are requested to upload their works there and

are graded according to the number of likes they receive (Ducusin, 2022). When

prompted to submit their work on social media sites, children are more likely to

experience bullying (cyberbullying), according to the Department of Information and

Communications Technology (DICT, 2019). Due of the likes they are receiving, students

will feel additional pressure. They further stated that young people are more prone to

experience despair when comparing their outcomes to those of others who will not be

happy with the outcome. They also recommend that professors encourage their pupils to

perform in order to increase student productivity.

As the country's use of the internet rises, not just each individual has their own

account, however there are also certain groups. Institutions such as Sangguniang

Kabataan and Batangas City and other Municipalities or Local Government Units, NGO's

or private officers. There are many followers on Batangas City's own account. who are

informed about their activities and interested in them. They are content. The events that

They are content. The events that Batangas City has placed on its wall. They are

also separate accounts for Sangguniang Kabataan and a number of people who want to

know about their projects and programs created with the intention of enhancing the

social, political, economic, cultural, and an individual's growth in mind, character, spirit,

and body individual. Internet usage is significant in the academic world as well. It

provides a wider range of perspectives and different reference. Despites of many

benefits of social media be it information sharing, social sharing or learning. On the other

hands, it has more young people more relied on virtual relationship rather than real

relationship.

Social media may have an impact on students' academic achievement the pupils.

Social networking platforms can benefit the students, but they are unaware that it can

also have negative effects consequences on kids, particularly in terms of academic

performance. There aren't many students who are currently seen as having using social

media (SNS), uploading, or commenting while in class. That may be demonstrated by

the date and time the action was performed.

The researchers noticed that these students' academic performance was,

students gradually got worse, especially after class absentmindedness or memory loss
during a class recitation during a discussion quiz. The researchers sought to ascertain

whether frequent usage of social media can influence the academic standing and

knowledge are more significant factors gained from students.

This becomes a crucial factor to take into account because, this is a vast field of

study. In various studies have looked at social media's impact on higher education as a

result of its enormous popularity. Balakel and Ganah (2018) examined social media use

for learning in relation to students' learning styles. Manca and Ranieri (2019) examined

the relationship between personal, teaching, and professional social media use by

higher education scholars. Ors et al. (2016) examined learner-generated content and its

effects on learning outcomes and satisfaction. Paul, Baker, and Cochran (2013)

examined the effect of online social networks on academic performance (Schlenkrich &

Sewry, 2015). Selwyn (2011) examined the educational implications of social media in

terms of new sorts of learners, learning, and higher education provision in his essay,

"Social Media in Higher Education." He argued that although there are debates on the

actual use of social media for learning and knowledge generation, educators are

challenged continually to find ways on how to effectively utilize social media in higher

education settings.

Many studies explored the advantages and disadvantages of social media to

student performance. They often used a broad exploration but this research makes it

unique because this study tackles the specific performance of G12 STEM students at

San Juan Senior High School Stand-Alone, and this research will explore the cause of

why they used social media for their academic performance. For instance, how do
students manage social media to use as a guide in increasing their academic

performance?

The researcher also found out other factors that affect the academic performance

of the respondents aside from the environmental factors mentioned, such as family,

peers, teachers, online games, social media, time, internet connection, health condition,

and attitude towards learning.

The researchers need to study this problem so that the students will be educated

that the over use of social media is not appropriate and can be harmful, apart from the

social benefits of social networking sites. It will ensure the importance of similar research

for teachers, parents, students and other researchers. This study would be useful

and provide more information on the impact of the academic success of social media

students.

media in the media. The relationship between demographic variables and the factors

which came out of this study may be examined. Further the affecting of social media in

academic performances on the social media behaviors of the students may measure in

order to find out the extent to which the students are affecting by use of social media and

how it is affecting the real relationship with family and friends. Out of this paper, only

factors related to the social media usage were extracted. Further analysis on the

relationship among the different factors was not done due to short span of time.

The Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics, will be answering

questionnaires organized by the researchers to acquire the data needed to determine if

social media gives them advantages or disadvantages academically.

CHAPTER II

METHODS & PROCEDURES

This chapter presents the methods used in this undertaking. This includes the

following: Research Design, Population and Locale, Instrumentation, Data Collection,

Data Analysis.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study I used the Cluster Sampling Method research design. According to

Mothari and Grag (2015), sampling is the process of selecting representative elements

from a given population to form the sample.

A sampling frame is a list that contains all of the units of a given population's

sample. Another sampling is the systematic process of selecting a number of individuals

for a study in order to represent the larger group from which they were drawn (Marshal &

Rossman, 12005, Mugenda and Mugenda,2006).

In my study I want to used cluster sampling methods is to obtain a representative

sample, or a small group of units or cases from a much larger group or population, so

that the researcher can study the smaller group and make accurate generalizations

about the larger group. Sampling is the selection of a subset of the population of interest

in a research study (Lowe and Ducs, 2022).

12
This research method is carried out to give value of the present relationships.

This research is to examine the amount of time using social media. Hence, this method

has utilized the relationship between the social media influence and academic

performance of STEM students of San Juan Senior High School- Stand Alone.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The research will conduct in San Juan Senior High School-Stand Alone.
