t o i t s s i z e and g e o g r a p h i c a l p o s i t i o n , n o r t h 04 t h e Be1 i z e r e e f com-
p l e x , Chinckorro A t o l l has aroused a s t r o n g i n t e r e s t i n the s c i e n t i f i c
communi t y . However, f e w s t u d i e s h a d been c o m p l e t e d on t h e a t 0 1 1 , n o t -
w i t h s t a n d i n g t h a t t h e B e l i z e r e e f complex h a s been i n t e n s i v e l y s t u d i e d
i n t h e p a s t two d e c a d e s ( S t o d d a r t , 1962; P u r d y , 1 9 7 4 ; James a n d
G i n s b u r g , 1979; R u t z l e r a n d M a c i n t y r e , 1 9 8 2 a ) .

CLIMATE AND HSDROL0GY.- The s o u t h e r n p a r t o f t h e Y u c a t a n P e n i n s u l a h a s


a s u b t r o p i c a l c l i m a t e , AM (XI, Koeppen m o d i f i e d s y s t e m C G a r c i a 9 H 9 6 4 I .
The r a i n y season P a s t s f r o m June t o O c t o b e r ; a f t e r t h i s p e r i o d , s p o r a d -
i c heavy r a i n f a l l c o u l d o c c u r d u r i n g w i n t e r a n d e a r l y s p r i n g due t o t h e
c o l d n o r t h w i n d s . The a n n u a l a v e r a g e r a i n f a l l on t h e m a i n l a n d i s a r o u n d
1400 mm. T r a d e w i n d s a r e t h e d o m i n a n t ones t h r o u g h t h e y e a r , a l t h o u g h
n o r t h w i n d s may p r e d o m i n a t e f r o m O c t o b e r t o May. H u r r i c a n e s a r e t h e
m a j o r c l i m a t i c e v e n t od t h e y e a r , I r o m June t o November. A c c o r d i n g t o
G e n t r y C1971I t h e r e i s a 50% p e r y c a r p r o b a b i l i t y t h a t a h u r r i c a n e w i l l
s t r i k e the Yucatan Caribbean s h o r e l i n e .

T h e r e i s l i t t l e i n f o r m a t i o n on h y d r o l o g y and w a t e r movement a r o u n d t h e
C h i n c h o r r o A t o l l a r e a . M o s t o-f t h e a v a i l a b l e i n f o r m a t i o n c m e s f r m
r e f e r e n c e s t o s p o r a d i c measurements i n t h e B e l i z e a n r e e f f o r m a t i o n s
( S t o d d a r t , 1974; James and G i n s b u r g , 1979; B u r k e , 1982; Greer and
K j e r v e , 1982 and K j e r v e e t a l . , 1 9 8 2 ) . M e r i n o I i n p r e s s ) f o l l o w e d t h e
o c e a n i c c u r r e n t p a t t e r n s w i t h d r i f t c a r d s , on t h e l e e w a r d and seaward
o f t h e a t o l l . Wust ( 1 9 6 4 ) c o n s i d e r s t h a t somewhere between t h e B e l i z e a n
a t o l l s and C h i n c h o r r o , t h e s u r f a c e c u r r e n t i s d e f l e c t e d b y t h e c o n t i -
n e n t a l mass t o w a r d s t h e Y u c a t a n C h a n n e l . The p r e s e n c e o f s t r o n g , b u t
s p o r a d i c c o u n t e r c u r r e n t s o v e r t h e f o r e r e e f on t h e w i n d w a r d and l e p -
w a r d s i d e o f t h e t h e a t o l l , h a s been r e p e a t e d l y o b s e r v e d b y t h e
authors.

I n t h e s e l e c t e d s i t e s ( c h o s e n because p r o m i n e n t m o r p h o l o g i c a l f e a t u r e s
o r g r o u n d e d s h i p s ) , t h e n e a r b y a r e a was s u r v e y e d b o t h b y t o w i n g and
swimming d i v e r s , i n o r d e r t o v e r i f y t h e commonness ob t h e f e a t u r e s t o
be a n a l y z e d . O b s e r v a t i o n s on t h e s e l e c t e d s i t e s c o n s i s t e d o f measure-
m e n t s 04 d e p t h s , d i m e n s i o n s and d i s t r i b u t i o n p a t t e r n s 0 4 t h e r e e f
s t r u c t u r e s , a s w e l l a s r e g i s t e r s o f b o t t o m t y p e s , and s p e c i e s c o m p o s i -
t i o n 04 s u b s t r a t e c a n t r o l l i n g b i o t a .

D e p t h s were d e t e r m i n e d w i t h s m a l l p o r t a b l e e c h ~ s e u n d e r s o r w i t h d i e i n g
d e p t h gauges, d e p e n d i n g on t h e e x t e n t and d e p t h o f t h e s t u d y a r e a . Reef
d i m e n s i o n s were measured w i t R marked 1 i n e s . S p e c i e s abundance and c o r a l
c o v e r b y d i r e c t o b s e r v a t i o n i n 5 , 25, 5 0 , 75 and 100% c a t e g o r i e s ; spa-
t i a l r e f e r e n c e w h i l e e s t i m a t i n g t h e abundances was g i v e n b y t h e measur-
i n g l i n e s . I d e n t i f i c a t i o n o f t h e c o r a l s p e c i e s was done " i n s i t u "
whenever p o s s i b l e , f o l l o w i n g W e l l s (19561, and Goreau and W e l l s I 1 9 6 7 ) ;
G o r g o n i a n s a f t e r Bayer ( 1 9 6 1 1 ; Sponges a f t e r De L a b e u n a e l s ( 1 9 5 5 ) w i t h

L a u r a H u e r t a IILPN). The g r o u n d e d modern s h i p s t h a t b o r d e r t h e e a s t w a r d
m a r g i n o f t h e a t o l l and r i s e more t h a n 10m above sea l e v e l , were u s e d
a s permanent s t a t i o n s whenever p c ~ s s i b l e , and t o g e t h e r w i t h t h e c a y s , a s
p o s i t i o n i n g p o i n t s a l l a l o n g t h e s t u d y a r e a . Grounded s h i p s l o c a t i o n on
t h e a t o l l were f i x e d b y r a d a r and s e x t a n t b e a r i n g s ( F i g . 1 ) .

The l o n g e s t a x i s 04 t h e r e e f ! s o u t h t o n o r t h ) i s p a r a l l e l t o t h e E a s t
margin 0f the Yucatan P e n i s u l a . Three cays are found i n s i d e the a t o l l :
Cay0 N o r t e ( 0 . 9 s q u a r e k m ) , Cayo C e n t r o ( 6 . 1 s q u a r e kmi and Caro L o b o s
( l e s s t h a n 0 . 1 s q u a r e km). Cayo N o r t e and Cayo C e n t r o a r e c o v e r e d w i t h
mangroves and s c a t t e r e d c o c o n u t p a l m s . Cayo L o b o s , t h e o n l y c a y c l o s e
t o t h e w i n d w a r d m a r g i n oB t h e a t 0 1 1 , h a s no p a l m s n o r mangroues and i s

n o r t h , a1 t h o u g h t h e y a r e a l w a y s p r e s e n t on t h e l a g o o n . I n t h e n o r t h
s e c t i o n t h e y a r e l o c a t e d m a i n l y on t h e c e n t r a l a r e a .

e x t e n s i v e and g e n t l y d i p p i n g p l a t f o r m , d e s c e n d i n g a t a l o w a n g l e i f r o m
3 t o 8 d e g r e e s ) down t o -35 t o -40m, where i t g i v e s way t o an a l m o s t
v e r t i c a l s l o p e b e y o n d -60m ( F i g . 21. T h i s f l a t , c a l c a r e o u s p l a t f o r m ,
w h i c h i s t h e most i m p o r t a n t m o r p h o l o g i c a l f e a t u r e on t h i s m a r g i n , seems
t o s t r o n g l y determine the r e e f c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s , as i s discussed below.

The w i n d w a r d m a r g i n i n c l u d e s a l l t h e a r e a t h a t c o r r e s p o n d s t o t h e r e a r
r e e f zone, t h e r e e f c r e s t zone and t h e f o r e r e e f zone. The d e s c r i p t i o n

Rear Reef Zone

I n t h e s o u t h e r n and c e n t r a l s e c t i o n s o f t h e a t o l l t h e c o r a l g r o w t h on
t h e r e a r r e e f zone e x t e n d s f o r 80 t o d50m, between t h e r e e f c r e s t and
an e x t e n s i v e sandy a r e a t h a t c o n s t i t u t e s p a r t o f t h e r e a r r e e f
platform.

I n t h e n o r t h s e c t i o n , t h e r e a r r e e f zone i s d i 4 f e r e n t f r o m t h e s o u t h
a n d c e n t r a l s e c t i o n s . I t c o n s i s t s o f a c a l c a r e o u s pavement w h i c h e x -
t e n d s t o w a r d t h e l a g o o n w h i t h o u t c o n s p i c u o u s reeB s t r u c t u r e s . The
b o t t o m i s c o u e r e d w i t h c o r a l r u b b l e , s a n d , and s m a l l and s c a t t e r e d
s c l e r a c t i n i a n c o l o n i e s where P o r i t e s a s t r e o i d e s d o m i n a t e s ; b u t i n
g e n e r a l i t i s p o o r l y p o p u l a t e d b y c o r a l s . Water d e p t h s r a n g e f r o m -2.4m
a t t h e d e e p e s t p a r t s t o l e s s t h a n -1.0m b e s i d e t h e r e e B c r e s t . The
inner l i m i t o f the r e a r r e e f i n t h i s s e c t i o n i s d i f f i c u l t t o estimate,
s i n c e t h e r e i s n o t a c l e a r edge s e p a r a t i n g i t f r o m t h e l a g o o n zone. I n
f a c t , i n t h e NE c o r n e r o f t h e a t o l l t h e r e a r e no a p p a r e n t changes i n
t h e b o t t o m c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s u n t i l Cayo N o r t e i s r e a c h e d , a l t h o u g h t h e r e
i s an i n c r e a s e i n t h e number and s i z e o f t h e s a n d p a t c h e s t o w a r d s t h e
cay.

P a l y t h o a c a r i bbea 1s r e l a t i v e l y common and many p a t c h e s c o v e r s m a l l


a r e a s o f s u b s t r a t e on t h e r e a r r e e f z o n e . M i l l e p o r a c m p l a n a t a may
f o r m t h i n c r u s t s o f n o more t h a n 15cm h i g h , i n c l u d i n g t h e u p w a r d
g r o w i n g b l a d e s . I n most p l a c e s however, t h e s u b s t r a t e i s exposed o r
c o v e r e d b y f i l a m e n t o u s a l g a e , g r o w i n g d i r e c t l y upon t h e c a l c a r e o u s
p a v e m e n t . Dense m a t s o f t h e brown a l g a e T u r b i n a r i a t u r b i n a t a a r e
-found d u r i n g t h e summer m o n t h s . G o r g o n i a n s a r e a l s o s c a r c e ( T a b l e 2 ) .

Reef C r e s t Zone

Few c o r a l c o l o n i e s w e r e Q o u n d on t h e c r e s t , w h i c h i s m o s t l y c o v e r e d b y
n o d u l o u s and b r a n c h e d c a l c a r e o u s a l g a e 0 4 t h e g e n e r a
h i thothamnium, and o t h e r s . A l t h o u g h these a
Germ a s e p a s a t e t h e y resemble t h e a l g a l r i d

patch ree-fs are found i n the T h a l l a s s i a testudinum area, a r i n g f r e e

center (Fig. 8). A s c a r c i t y o f patch r e e f s characterize t h i s p a r t o f
t h e l a g o o n , where two c a y s (Cayo N o r t e ) a r e p r e s e n t i n t h e n o r t h e r n t i p
o f t h e a t o l l , The sandy b o t t o m o f t h e l a g o o n f l o o r a r o u n d them, i s
c o v e r e d b y dense beds o f T h a l l a s s i a t e s t u d i n u m w h i c h a r e g r a d u a l l y
r e p l a c e d b y dense a l g a l p a t c h e s , away f r o m t h e c a y s . These p a t c h e s a r e
composed m a i n l y b y s p e c i e s o f t h e g e n e r a L a u r e n c i a , L o b o p h o r a ,
Dictyota, m, U d o t e a and o c a s s i o n a l l y P e n i c i l l u s , w h i c h
cover e x t e n s i v e areas o f the lagoon bottom. S c a t t e r e d b i g , massive

i s o l a t e d c o r a l heads o f M o n t a s t r e a a n n u l a r i s between -3 and -8m, From
-8 t o -15m a sandy b o t t o m w i t h dew s c a t t e r e d c o r a l h e a d s and r o c k y o u t -
c r o p s p r e d o m i n a t e s . From -15m t o t h e edge o f t h e p l a t f o r m , t h e a p p e a r -
ence i s v e r y s i m i l a r t o t h a t d e s c r i b e d above f o r t h e Wreck Reef f o r e
r e e f a r e a , w i t h a r i m o f r o c k y o u t c r o p s a t t h e o u t e r l i m i t s . These
o u t c r o p s f a r m c o r a l l i n e s t r u c t u r e s up t o 7m h i g h , and a r e a l s o d e n s e l y
c o l on i z e d .

A t CL-2 on t h e c e n t r a l s e c t i o n o f t h e a t o l l t h e s h a l l o w l e e w a r d m a r g i n
i s s i m i l a r t o t h a t o f CL-1, b u t deeper t h a n -20m. The s l o p e a n g l e
changes f r o m 15 t o more t h a n 55 d e g r e e s ( F i g s . 2 and 5 ) . On t h i s s l o p e ,
c o r a l patches are e x t r e m e l y abundant, f o r m i n g a d i s t i n c t hardground
on t h e sandy s l o p e . C o r a l b i o t a , i n c l u d i n g s c l e r a c t i n i a n c o r a l s i s v e r y
p r o l i f i c a n d abundant on t h e s e p a t c h e s . T h i s h a b i t a t d i s a p p e a r s a t -51m
due t o a n o t h e r change i n t h e a n g l e o f t h e s l o p e , t h i s t i m e t o l e s s t h a n
20 d e g r e e s . A deep l a y e r o f s a n d c o v e r s t h e s l o p e , and sand e e l s
( N y s t a c t i c h t h r s h a l i s ) c o n s t i t u t e t h e d o m i n a n t f a u n a . A t -61m t h e

od t h e a t o l l . However, t h e deep w a t e r tongue on t h e l a g o o n zone, t h a t
r u n s s o u t h t o n o r t h , may i n d i c a t e n o t i l t i n g o f t h e P l e i s t o c e n e base-
