Tutorial-5: Friction

1. Determine the force P required to start the wedge shown in Fig. The coecient of friction for all surfaces
in contact is 150 .

2. The 4m long ladder AB weighs 120 N. It rests against a vertical wall and on the horizontal oor, as is
shown in g. What must the minimum coecient of friction µ be for equilibrium? Assume µ to be the
same for both surfaces.

3. Determine the value of P that will cause the 70-kg block in Figure to move. The coecient of static
friction between the block and the horizontal surface is 0.25.
4. Will the 200N block shown in Fig. be held in equilibrium by the horizontal force of 300 N? The coecient
of static friction is 0.3.

5. What horizontal forces P on the wedges B and C are necessary to raise the weight of 200 kN resting on
A? See Fig. Assume µ between the wedges and the ground is 0.25 and µ between the wedges and A is
0.2. Also assume symmetry of loading.

6. Block B rests on block A and is attached by a horizontal rope BC to a wall as shown in Fig. What force
P is necessary to cause motion of A to impend? The coecient of friction between A and B is 0.25, and
between A and the oor is 0.333. A has a mass of 14 kg and B has a mass of 9 kg.

7. What should be the value of the angle θ so that motion of the 40kg block impends down the plane? The
coecient of friction mu for all surfaces is 0.333. Refer to Fig.

8. Refer to Fig. Determine the necessary force P acting parallel to the plane to cause motion to impend.
Assume that the coecient of friction is 0.25 and that the pulley is smooth.

9. Refer to Fig. The wedge B is used to raise the load of 1960 N resting on block A. What horizontal force
P is required to do this if the coecient of friction for all surfaces is 0.2? Neglect the weights of the
blocks.

10. The uniform 10 kg ladder in gure rests against the smooth wall at B,and the end A rests on the rough
horizontal plane for which the coecient of static friction is 0.3.Determine the angle of inclination θ of
the ladder and the normal reaction at B if the ladder is on the verge of slipping.

11. Determine the minimum force P to prevent the 30 kg load rod AB from sliding. The contact surface at
B is smooth, where as the coecient of static friction between the rod and the wall at A is 0.2
