MUSIC GRADE 7

I. Objectives

A. Content Standards
 Demonstrates understanding of the musical characteristics of representative music from the
highlands of Luzon, Mindoro, Palawan, and the Visayas.
B. Performance Standard
 Performs selected vocal and instrumental music of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and the Visayas
in appropriate style.
C. Learning Competencies
 Explains the distinguishing characteristics of representative music from Cordillera, Mindoro,
Palawan and of the Visayas in relation to its culture and geography; (MU7LV-IIb-f3)

D. Enabling Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1. Distinguish and explain the vocal music and instrumental music of Palawan.

2. Describe the musical characteristics of selections of Palawan through listening, and

3. Perform samples of native songs from Palawan.

Warm up:

Please stand up, let’s play a game to energize our


body. The title of this game is Yes, No, Stand up! (The students will participate)

B. Review

Before we proceed to our discussion. Let’s recall


the lesson yesterday.

 What topic did we discussed yesterday?


Ma’am about Music of Mindoro
Very good!

 What are the instruments of Mindoro? Agung, Kalutang, Gitgit, Kudlong, and Lantuy
 What about their vocal music? Igway, Marayaw, Pamuybuyen and Ambahan

Very Good!

C. Motivation

answer)
Class, I have here 3 pictures that are cut into
pieces. I want you to arrange each picture to know
what our discussion all about.

But before that, I will group you into three (3).

So, after you found out the answer, is there any


idea about our topic today?
About Palawan music

You’re right! We will discuss about the vocal


music and musical instrument of Palawan.

D. Developmental Activities

Discussion A:

Lalawigan ng Palawan is an island province of the


Philippines located in Region 4. Its capital is
Puerto Princesa City.

Palawan, the largest province in the Philippines, is


home to several indigenous ethnolinguistic
groups:

Batak – which means “mountain people”. These


people believe in nature spirits, with whom they
communicate through a Babaylan.

Palawenos – native-born dwellers

Palawano – also known as Pala’wan, is one of the


unique indigenous peoples of Palawan.

Tagbanwa – or “the people of the world” are


found in central and northern palawan.

There are different forms of vocal music in


Palawan. Do you know what are this vocal forms
of Palawan?

There are 4 vocal forms, the Kulial, Tultul, Ulit, No Maam


and Batac.
Vocal Music of Palawan

Kulial – it is a lyrical poem expressing love.

Tultul – it is a chanted vocal music about epic


heroes and usually chanted at night, ending at
daybreak.

Ulit – is a shamanic chant. Shamanic deals with


the act of curing the sick through rituals like
chanting.

Batac – is a chant performed by the Taganuas five


days after the interment of the deceased.

Activity 1: SOLVE IT THEN IT WILL SAIL!

The boat is heading to an island but there are


obstacles that needs to be solved to get to that
island.

The Cuyunon Folk Songs The students will participate

Cuyunon refers to ethnic group in Cuyo islands


and other parts of Palawan. Some of their most
familiar and favorite songs are the Tarinting,
Kingking, and Layang Pasyak.

Discussion B:

Okay, now you already know the vocal music of


Palawan then we will proceed to the musical
instruments of Palawan.

Musical Instruments of Palawan

Palawan Musical Instruments can be classified


into four groups: Chordophones, Aerophones,
Idiophones, and Membranophones.

Chordophones – are instruments that use


vibrating strings to produce sound.

 Pagang (Bamboo Zither) – it is made of


one whole node of bamboo which is
partly slit to keep the whole node
together. The lifted bamboo skin serves as
strings and the slit serves as the resonator.
 Kudyapi – this instrument has 9 frets and
two strings. The body of this instruments
comes from a carved solid trunk of a tree.
This instrument is four to six feet tall.

Aerophones – are wind instruments. They


produce sound by blowing air in its mouthpiece.

 Tipanu – is a mouth flute of Tagbanua.


This instrument is made from bamboo. It
has six holes.
 Aruding – this is otherwise known as
jew’s harp.
 Suling – is a banded nose flute. This
instrument is made from bamboo with a
thin surface. The head of this instrument
is circled with a rattan band to produce air
vibration.

Idiophones – are musical instruments whose


sound is generate through vibrations by striking,
rubbing or plucking – without the use of strings or
membranes.

 Basal (gong) – an example of this is the


Babendil. It is a small bossed gong as a
timekeeper.

Membranophones – are instruments which


produce sounds by means of a vibrating stretched
membrane (animal skin).

 Gimbal – this is a drum from the


Tagbanua with animal skin as its
drumhead.
