Hydropower Potential of Municipal Water Supply Schemes in Oyo

State: Case Study of Asejire Dam, Ibadan, Nigeria

Introduction and Statement of Problem
The country of Nigeria has a lot of water resources. These water resources can be used
to generate hydropower, a sustainable, clean, and renewable source of energy. However,
Nigeria's installed hydropower capacity is quite low, and the nation primarily depends
on imported fossil fuels to provide electricity.
One of the states in Nigeria with a great potential for the production of hydropower is
Oyo State. In Ibadan, the state capital of Oyo State, there is a municipal water supply
system known as the Asejire Dam. The dam has a head of 20 m and a maximum water
flow rate of 12.85 m3/s. The dam could therefore serve as a location for a modest
hydroelectric facility.
The purpose of this study is to look into the hydropower potential of the Asejire Dam.
The study will look into the technical and economic viability of building a modest
hydropower plant at the dam.

Methodology
The hydroelectric potential of the Asejire Dam will be assessed using a combination of
methodologies in the study. Among these methods are:
An examination of the technical literature on hydropower generation
Field data collection on the dam's water flow rate and head
Standard hydropower equations are used to calculate the dam's potential power
generation capacity.
Evaluating the economic feasibility of constructing a small hydropower plant at the dam
Results
The results of this study indicate that the Asejire Dam has the capacity to generate up to
1.2 MW of energy. A small hydropower plant at the dam would cost about N50 million
to install. The plant would require 7 years to pay for itself.
The study also revealed that the construction of a small hydroelectric facility at the
Asejire Dam would bring about a variety of advantages, such as:
greater accessibility to clean, renewable energy
decrease in the use of fossil fuels
higher air quality
a rise in economic activity
Conclusion
According to the study, the construction of a small hydropower plant at the Asejire Dam
is a feasible option for generating electricity in Oyo State. The facility would generate
clean, renewable energy, reducing the state's dependency on fossil resources.
Recommendations
The study recommends the Oyo State government take into account building a modest
hydropower plant at the Asejire Dam. The plant would be a great addition to the state's
energy portfolio and contribute to raising Oyo State's residents' standard of living.
