Short Midterm Written Examination

Explain/Discuss

1. Why is art ageless and timeless? Why is art universal? Why is an art not nature?
There are different artworks in the world. The artworks that I say are made from
some of the following: to portray a message, to apply newly discovered techniques in
doing such art, for fun and personal purposes, to provide aesthetics, recordkeeping, and
to improve humanity in terms of design, and creativity.
This means that man and art are almost the same age. Art is the creative tool of
making imagination into a more feasible way to an extent that it should be produced
visually, through expression, auditory, etc. Artists use this as their go-to medium to tell
or show the life it was in a specific generation. This is the reason why art is timeless and
ageless. Art is used by artists to meet people in a way that it would be looked by
centuries and would know how people live, and what are the certain events that were
special in those times. In simpler words, this is recording the life of before.
Art is used throughout the world, through different races, religion, and ages; art
has been the go-to medium of the artists to portray something. Therefore, we can pretty
tell that art is the medium of the artists for expressing emotions. Emotions are universal
too. It does not follow a specific linguistic. It is the feeling that counts. Art is emotion,
emotion is universal. In other words, art is universal since it is a product of feelings,
imagination, and emotions.
We by knowing all of these, we can pretty tell that art is not nature. This is because
art is something that is made by man. It is either made with a purpose or just a product of
pure imagination to an extent that the artist just goes for it and made such art. To sum this
up, art is a man-made construct and it is not a natural occurrence.

2. Why does art involve experience? Why does art demand involvement?
For someone to produce an art that can be recognized and acknowledge by
everyone, that artist needs to acquire experiences. By experiences, this entails the
following:
a) Our ability to deal with struggles
b) Our communication with people
c) Our knowledge and learning about Art
d) Our appropriate application of the things and apply it to an artwork
By having these experiences, we can pretty tell that it will be an advantage in
creating an art piece. These experiences can help set and even revolve the artwork
depending on the artist’s mood, experiences or emotions.
Art is like telling a story. This means that experiences can play a big role to
create such a beautiful art. For example, if someone is in a tough situation that involves
sorrow, pain, and shortcomings; this would result for an him/her to use this experience
as an inspiration to make an art.
Experiences makes the art more relatable to the audiences. It allows the artist to
show his/her feelings while improving his/her art style and techniques. Although art is
subjective and there are art prodigies, we cannot deny that art requires such things in
order to be properly called a specific art work, an art.
Art does demand involvement. This statement can be supported in 2 ways:
(1) To be more appreciated. As stated earlier, art is same as storytelling, this
means that an audience can perceive an art and would remind them of something or
someone that might bring up memories or even come up with his/her own view of an art
piece that establishes involvement within the audience and the artist.
(2) Communication. Even though we can tell that art is done by an artist, we can
also tell that when an art that has an effective impact to the audience, this would result
them to be influenced by the artist’s point of view. This would mean that the artist has
established rapport by using an artwork to his/her audience. This can result that the
artwork’s message can be absorbed by the audience and possibly, change his/her own
perceptions of the world.

3. Does art always have a function? If artwork did not have any function, will it
remain art?
Functions of art can be categorized into: personal, physical, or social. The
physical functions are often the easiest to understand. Architecture, crafts, and
industrial designs are forms of art that serve physical function. Art that depicts social
conditions are the one performing social functions also.
Art is always said to have a function. However, the functionality of the art is hard
to understand. In order to know the context and function of art, one must identify the
artist’s background and terms of art and know what genre he/she belong. Functions of
art can be classified by the following:
(1) Physical, these are the ones in which we can see or use, artforms like crafts,
architecture, industrial designs, and many more.
(2) Social, these are the ones that use social interaction between people. This art
also depicts such social conditions and performing arts.
(3) Personal, these are the ones that use personal experiences or personal
understandings into a certain topic. These are functions that portray advocacy and such
messages to its audiences.
However, if an art lacks purpose. This means that it is not a functional art. But
this does not mean this it is not an art anymore. An art with no utilitarian purpose can
still remain art.

4. Based on your assigned country, how would you describe their artworks? Are
there similarities and differences to other countries? Are their artworks more beautiful
than others?
Artworks in my assigned country, Australia, is a fascinating one. In the visual
arts, the country was influenced by British, Greek, and European touches, this resulted
to have various types of brush strokes and techniques in the colonial era. It also
resulted in coming up with new ideas on how to make such art.
The same goes with architecture, some structures were influenced by European
touches. Some of these were the sculptures in the buildings that applies the concepts of
sculpture making of the Greeks and the Romans. This gave them new way of making
such ornamental and sleek structures with a touch of some European contexts.
By studying some of their artworks, I can pretty tell that through learning from
different countries and nationalities, they came up with a pretty unique signature style of
art in the Australian context.

5. What artform/artwork has changed something in your life? Why?

Artwork: To This Day, I Hate Porkchop
Artist: Shane Koyczan
Artform: Poetry and Cinema
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltun92DfnPY&list=LL&index=280

The artwork pertains to talk about abuse and bullying. The impacts of the bullying
and abuse from school and in his grandmother to the poet, Shane, was explained in a
creative and a heartbreaking manner.
He stated that he believed that when he was a child, getting hurt by the arms of
his grandmother for no particular reason was normal. That it is his fault for not knowing
a thing even though he is still a kid that is on the stage of learning how things work.
In school, he was bullied by his appearance. He was shouted and bullied that he
will not be loved by someone and he will be lonely for the rest of his life.
He said that he was diagnosed with depression and attempted to kill himself at
tenth grade. But his mother and father just asked him to get over with it, like it is some
kind of thing that could be easily done.
By watching this video and listening to his piece, I was touched and I cried. I
realized how cruel the world is for a lot of people. Some people were invalidated,
unappreciated, bullied, harassed, and abused.
This changed my life in a way that I should stop bullying someone that degrades
their confidence and self-esteem. I also learned that I should be more sensitive to
people’s feelings because there are specific things that might not be important to us, but
would mean the whole world to them. Like what the ending line of the poem said:

“Our lives will only ever always

Continue to be
A balancing act
That has less to do with pain
And more to do with beauty”
