There are no user serviceable parts inside the Cirrus Hybrid. A competent person trained to
undertake such work MUST carry out any internal maintenance work. A separate installation
and commissioning manual is available.
This equipment has been manufactured in conformance with the requirements of all
applicable EU council directives and regulations.
Electrical or electronic devices that are no longer serviceable must be collected separately and
sent for environmentally compatible recycling (in accordance with the European Waste
Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive). To dispose of old electrical or electronic devices,
you should use the return and collection systems put in place in the country concerned.
The policy of Protec Fire Detection plc is one of continuous improvement. As such we reserve the right to
make changes to product specifications at any time and without prior notice. Errors and omissions excepted.
1.0 Scope of document

This document details the user information for the Protec Cirrus Hybrid Aspirating Smoke Detector with
specific attention to the basic system operations of the product. The Protec Cirrus Hybrid Aspirating Smoke
Detector has been designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom and complies fully with current
standard dictating aspirating smoke detector design practice (EN54 parts 20).
2.0 User Responsibilities

The registered owner of the fire alarm system has specific responsibilities regarding the installation, testing
and maintenance of the fire alarm system.
BS5839 Pt 1: 2013 Section 7 states that the user of the fire alarm system must appoint a single named
person to supervise all matters regarding the fire alarm system.
Summarised below are the responsibilities expected of the named person,
It is strongly advised that a full copy of BS5839 Pt 1: 2013 is obtained and

thoroughly read and understood.
3.0 Cirrus Hybrid General

3.1 Introduction
The Cirrus Hybrid utilises both Cloud Chamber and Scatter Chamber detection technology to monitor for
Fire and Smoke through an aspirating pipe system. These two technologies are used together to combine
the best attributes of each technology in an algorithm based system.
3.2 Cloud Chamber

It is known that particles smaller than the wavelength of visible light occur spontaneously as a material is
overheated, and in numbers far above those present in a normal ambient environment. Cirrus Hybrid
utilises the Wilson Cloud Chamber principle to detect the sub-micron particles that are generated at the
incipient, and all other stages of fire.
A filtered air sample is delivered to the detector via a centrifugal blower, a portion of which is diverted into a
humidifier. At approximately 100% relative humidity, the sample is directed to the Cloud Chamber where,
because of cooling, due to rapid vacuum expansion, water condenses onto the small particles and forms a
‘cloud’.
Consequently, the thermally generated particles cause many droplets to form into the cloud, which is then
detected by the measuring system of the Cloud Chamber. The density of the cloud being proportional to
the number of particles present.
The result is a continuous signal that corresponds to the particle concentration. This signal is used to
provide a staged alarm sequence with four alarm levels.
The Cirrus Hybrid is a self-supervised system that continuously monitors for correct operation. Any problem
is immediately reported on the front panel display, buzzer and the operation of a Fault relay.
The Cirrus Hybrid locally stores fault data, background particle concentration and event data. These can be
accessed from the Menus.

The diagram shows the physical details of the Cirrus Cloud Chamber for reference throughout this manual.
3.3 Scatter Chamber Detector

The Scatter Chamber Detector (SCD) operates by measuring the light scattered by the air within the scatter
chamber.
A photo sensitive sensor element is placed in a dark chamber with a high brightness light source that
cannot be ‘seen’ by the sensor. When smoke is present the light is scattered in all directions, some of
which is detected by the sensor and relates to the amount of smoke present.
The scatter chamber detector in the Cirrus Hybrid is very sensitive, many times more than that of the point
detector and so can be used in an aspirating system which has considerable dilution from clean areas.
3.4 Hybrid
As scatter chambers are as sensitive to dust as they are to smoke, the hybrid system utilises the cloud
chamber as the primary detector which is not affected by dust with a boost signal when the scatter
chamber detects the smoke. Using the two technologies allows the Cirrus Hybrid to make the fire decision
even earlier whilst minimising the detection of false alarms.

4.5 Cirrus Hybrid Display

The Cirrus Hybrid uses a touch screen for its display. There are no buttons other than those presented on
the touch screen. The display is based on a scrolling webpage which initially shows the top of the page,
representing the first page or screen, known as the Home Page. The Home Page shows the Combined
Fire and Smoke (CFS) levels of all the connected pipes in a dial, in this case four pipes.
The CFS number indicates the numerical value of the particle level of both fire and smoke in the protected
area. The pre-alarm (Amber), fire 1, fire 2, and fire 3 (red) alarms points are indicated by the coloured
markers. The current status of fires and faults are shown under the Detector Status title bar below the dials.

4.6 Access code

Although all menu screens are viewable, to enable the user functions the user is required to enter an
access level code to modify or save configurations.
Click on the key icon to the left of the page.
Enter the access level code and click enter.
Providing the code is correct for either user the following message will appear and the icon will change
colour from the green to a red .
User Level Access Code (default): 1 4 4 2
If the code is incorrect the following message will appear.
The access level timeouts after 4 minutes from the last keypress/screen touch.
Pressing the red icon logs the user out.
The default access code can be changed from the access code menu screen .
Providing the user access code has been correctly entered the user can begin to view and edit basic
system functions of Cirrus Hybrid detector.
4.7 Home Page
Select the home icon for quick navigation.
Selecting a pipe dial on the home page displays the two fire
and smoke technologies calculated to generate the combined
fire and smoke signal (CFS).
Fire and Smoke is a combination of the two technologies to
create the combined fire and smoke (CFS) algorithm.

Providing ‘timezone’ is enabled, the home page will display to
indicate the pipe night mode is activated.
Silence and reset
The Cirrus Hybrid is fitted with an internal buzzer. The buzzer will sound when the unit is in Fault, Pre-
alarm or Fire.

Fire Fast ½ second ON and ½ second OFF
The user access level allows the internal buzzer to be silenced by pressing the silence button.
When a fire is active the Cirrus Hybrid displays a reset button. Press the reset button to manually reset the
fire. The fire will automatically reset once the potential hazard is removed.
4.8 Setting the Date and Time
Click on the clock icon on the left hand side. Ensure you are logged in as user to edit the time.
Set the time either by the:

 rotating the clock minute hand by selecting and dragging or
 using the + & - symbols to increment/decrement the hours & minutes.
Set the date by:

 navigating the >> arrows to the correct year
 navigating the > arrows to the correct month
 clicking the correct day.
4.9 Viewing the Airflow & Fan Settings
Click the airflow icon for quick navigation.
The airflow menu displays:

 the current airflow for each pipe.
 the fault tolerance monitoring for each pipe.
 the airflow ignore box for each pipe.
 the fan speed configurable from 5% to 100%.
The acceptable fault tolerance area is displayed on the dial in green; therefore any reading in the red area
generates a fault.
4.10 Changing the User Access Code

Click the access codes icon for quick navigation. Ensure you are logged using the current user access
code to enable editing. The user access level code can be changed to a custom number of digits ranging
from 1 to 9.
4.11 Viewing the Network information

Click the network icon for quick navigation.
The network menu displays:
 Protec Loop serial number.
 Protec address for each pipe assigned by the Protec fire panel
 IP address, Subnet Mask and Gateway either automatically assigned by network or manually
inputted as a fixed address.
 Camera [1 to 6] URL address of the JPEG feed
4.12 Viewing the Event log

Click the log data icon for quick navigation. Click again to toggle between event log, realtime and
historical graph.
The Cirrus Hybrid stores all fire, faults and events in the event log. The event log can store a maxium of
256 events. In the user access level 16 latest events are viewable.
4.13 Pipe Map

Click the site pipe icon for quick navigation.
Displays a map of the system pipework installation, providing requested at time of commissioning.
To remove the image map from the display touch the screen anywhere, the display will return to the home
page.
5.0 Response to an Alarm

5.1 Pre-alarm
When a pre-alarm condition is activated the Cirrus Hybrid unit will display the pipe text of the pipe in alarm
in the ‘detector status’ list. The pre-alarm LED will illuminate and the buzzer will pulse. Any commissioned
outputs will activate and the fire condition is reported to the Protec Fire panel.
The appointed ‘Responsible Person’ should investigate the relevant area following the official
procedures for the building. Extreme care must be exercised at all times.
5.2 Fire
When a fire alarm condition is activated the Cirrus Hybrid unit will display the pipe text of the pipe in alarm
and the fire alarm level (1, 2 or 3) in the ‘detector status’ list. The fire alarm level LED will illuminate and the
buzzer will pulse (fast). Any commissioned outputs will activate and the fire condition is reported to the
Protec Fire panel.
The building fire plan must be executed immediately.
5.3 Silencing the Alarm

Press the Silence button when in user access level will silence alarm outputs. A further activation will re-
sound the alarms.
5.4 Resetting the Alarm

After the cause of the alarm has been determined the Cirrus Hybrid can be manually reset if required, by
pressing the reset button when in user access level. The fire alarm will automatically reset once the
potential hazard is removed.
To reset the fire panel refer to the fire panel user manual.
6.0 Response to a Fault/s

The Cirrus Hybrid monitors various aspects of the unit to ensure the unit is operating within its correct
parameters. When the cirrus hybrid has a fault the buzzer will sound and one or more of the following
indications will be displayed. Unless otherwise stated in is necessary to contact a Protec operative or a
Protec distributor.
6.1 Device Missing

A communication problem to a device within the unit has been detected or a device has been removed
from the unit.
User Action
Check the device in fault is fitted correctly otherwise contact a Protec operative or a Protec distributor.
6.2 Device Added

A Cirrus Hybrid device has been added to the unit but the unit has not been commissioned to enable the
device. The device will NOT detect fires.
User Action
Contact a Protec operative or a Protec distributor.
6.3 Airflow Fault

The airflow reading has moved out of the accepted fault tolerance nominal value range by either an
increase or a decrease in airflow.
Select the quick navigate airflow icon to view the current airflow value. At the time
of commissioning when the pipe configurations are complete the airflow reading must
be zeroed. The Cirrus Hybrid sets the normalised zeroed value to 100%. If the airflow
reading has drifted out of the fault tolerance range an airflow fault is generated.
User Action
Check the air inlet pipes and outlet exhaust are fitted correctly with no blockages
If the fault persists contact a Protec operative or a Protec distributor.
6.4 No Water Fault

The cloud chambers distilled water reservoir is empty. The unit will continue to operate for approximately 5
days after the ‘No Water’ fault is generated.
User Action
Refill the internal water container using distilled water only. Any other water will damage the unit. Follow the
service procedure.
6.5 Chamber Seal Fault

The chamber is tested for ‘leaks’ during the power up tests. This fault does not necessarily stop the unit
functioning, but it must be attended to before complete failure occurs.

6.6 Vacuum Fault

The unit has detected that the vacuum generated is insufficient to form a cloud. Check connections to the
pump, the pump operation and the pipe to sensor on the PCB and from the pump to the cloud chamber.

6.7 Cloud Chamber LED fault

The unit has detected that insufficient light is being received at the photodiode.

6.8 Water fill fault

The unit has detected that the water fill value level reading out of range.
User Action
6.9 Sample
The unit has detected that the cloud chamber sample route is blocked. This means that the unit is not
receiving a sample.

6.10 Purge
The unit has detected that the purge path is blocked. This means that the unit is not purging correctly.

6.11 High Optical Background

The optical analogue value has increased outside the operation limitation range. The Scatter Chamber
Detector (SCD) is a calibrated device therefore disassembling the unit will void the calibration.

6.12 Corrupt Settings

Internal settings are outside the expected values.

6.13 Incomplete Manufacture

The manufacturing data has not been fully entered and saved.

6.14 Low supply

The unit has detected that the incoming DC power to the unit is too low (less than approx. 19VDC).
User Action
6.15 Supply Fault

The supply fault monitoring input is reading less than 2,5V. The unit has detected that the fault output from
the charger has activated.
User Action
It may be necessary to look at the power supply charger unit to determine the cause of the fault.
The fault persists contact a Protec operative or a Protec distributor.
6.16 Corrupt File

This is specifically based on the webpage file which is checked when programmed into the unit.

6.17 Cold Unit

The unit internal temperature has been lower than 3°C. The water could start to freeze at ~°C.
A cold unit may also generate water fill faults as unit is too cold to fill.

6.18 Processor Fault

The internal processor hardware has unexpectedly reset. Cleared only on a full power cycle. This is
indicated if a problem has been detected with the micro controller or the Read Only Memory (ROM).

6.19 Unit isolated

The units alarm relays have been isolated via a monitored input.
User Action
If used check external input isolation equipment. Otherwise contact a Protec operative or a Protec
distributor.
6.20 Airflow Ignored

Airflow monitoring has been ignored for selected pipe/s.
User Action
6.21 Calibration
Values stored for calibration are out of range.

6.22 Battery
A monitored input set up for External Battery Fault has detected a fault.
User Action
Check the power supply equipment and wiring if the fault persists contact a Protec operative or a Protec
distributor.
6.23 Mains
A monitored input set up for Mains Fault has detected a fault.

Check the power supply equipment and wiring if the fault persists contact a Protec operative or a Protec
distributor.
6.24 Pipe Scan Halted

The pipe hold function forces a scanning unit to sample from the selected pipe. While unit is in this state it
will display a ‘Pipe Scan Halted fault’, until the pipe hold function is disabled.

6.25 Heat Fault

The thermistor reading for monitoring the pipe temperature in the SCD is out of range.

6.26 Incorrect Device Type

The SCD fitted is the incorrect type for the Hybrid. Types include Hybrid SCD and ProPoint PLUS SCD.

7.0 Events
The Cirrus Hybrid stores operational events within the internal memory ‘event log’. The following events are
logged.
Processor Fault The internal processor hardware has unexpectedly reset.
Power Up The unit has powered up, occurring on first power, unstable supply voltage or after
an undesired reset.
Fire Level The fire level has increased above the stable background threshold.
Time Set The internal system time has been set.
Faults Cleared All system faults have been cleared, system returned to normal status.
Event Log Cleared The event log has been manually cleared.
Historic Graph The historic graph has been manually cleared.

Supply Brownout The operating supply voltage has reduced to < 18VDC for > 2 seconds.
Device Reset An SCD has been reset.
Fire Reset A fire condition has been manually reset.
Water Emptied The water empty function has been activated.
Airflow Faults Cleared The airflow latched fault has been manually reset.
8.0 Maintenance
Maintenance service visits are dependent upon the type of application environment. For example a unit
installed into a dirty environment will require more frequent maintenance then a clean environment. All
maintenance should be carried out by a suitably trained and qualified person.
8.1 Cloud Chamber Water Requirements

Distilled water only, replenished as required, dependent upon environment. Low ambient humidity
(<50% R.H) or high ambient temperature (>30C) conditions will increase the water usage.
8.2 Periodic Checks and Maintenance

The Cirrus Hybrid continuously adjusts its monitoring functions by means of feedback loops, ensuring a
minimum of maintenance. To ensure continued correct operation, the system must be checked:
 Daily by the User.

 Every three months by Protec Fire Detection or an authorised representative.
 Whenever building alterations have been performed which could affect the system's operation.
 Whenever equipment within the protected area has been altered which could affect the system's
operation.
 During a fault condition.
 After any alarm condition.
The following are based on average conditions. Because of the wide range of possibilities in various
applications, the frequency of periodic checks and maintenance may have to be adjusted accordingly.
8.3 Daily Checks

The following must be performed EVERY DAY by the system User:
 Check system indicates a healthy condition.

 Any fault indicated should be recorded in the system logbook and investigated.
 Determine the extent of the fault and decide whether special actions (such as fire patrols) are needed.
 Check that any faults reported previously have been attended to.
