Motif: The Lorax
I. Objectives: During the lesson, pupils are expected to:

a. give the positive, comparative, and superlative degrees of regular adjectives;
b. respond politely when asked; and
c. create simple sentences using positive, comparative, and superlative degrees
of regular adjectives.

A. Preparatory Activity
Good morning, children! Good morning, teacher!
How are you today? We’re fine, thank you.
That’s good to hear.
I am Teacher Lou and I will be teaching you

today for our English Class.
1. Drill
Our first activity is called, “What Am I?”
Ted needs your help in answering a few

riddles. Let us help him guess what objects
are being described.
Are you ready? Yes, teacher.
Okay, first riddle:

I am hot.
I live in the sky.
I am bright.
Don't look straight at me.
I disappear in the night.
What am I? Sun!
Correct. Now let us try this one.
I twinkle.
There are millions of me.
I will light your way.
I come out at night.
I hide in the city.
What am I? Stars.
Very good. Now, let us have another one.
I am usually green and brown.

I can live for a long time.
I'm a house for a bird.
And kids love to climb me.
What am I? A tree!
Exactly! Doing great, children. Last, but not

lesson, you are all expected to:
a. give the positive, comparative, and

superlative degrees of regular
adjectives;
b. respond politely when asked; and
c. create simple sentences using positive,
comparative, and superlative degrees
or regular adjectives.

2. Exploration
What do you see on the screen?

This time, we will read a dialogue between

a father and a son.

The Sturdy Tree
Jane together with her classmates went to

Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature
Center in Diliman, Quezon City. Below is a
dialogue between Jane and her father
after the trip.
Father: How’s the trip?
Jane: I had a great time!
Father: I’m glad to hear that! Would you

like to tell me more about your trip?
Jane: Ok, the park is smaller than the other

park I’ve seen in Manila. I saw several
trees. Among the trees I saw, I was
fascinated the most with the Narra tree. It
was the oldest and the tallest tree in the
park! Its trunk and branch are bigger than
the trees in the school.
Father: Do you know the Narra tree is the

national tree of the Philippines?
Jane: Yes, I do. But why is it the national

tree of the Philippines?
Father: The Narra tree has sturdy wood.
Like the Narra, the Filipinos are strong
people.
Jane: I want to know more about the Narra

tree. Dad, I will read more about it on the
Internet later.
Father: Sure! Let’s go home now.
Well done for reading the dialogue. Now,

let us answer the following questions.

Yes, there is only one.
Now, how about the adjective? What is the

adjective in our sentence?
It is tall, teacher.
Yes, it is tall. Let us have another example:
The santol tree is taller than the mango

tree.
There are how many nouns in the sentence

now?
There are two, teacher.
What are they?
The santol tree and the mango

Good observation. How about the adjective tree, teacher.
in our sentence? What is the adjective for
our second example? Taller?
Very good. That’s correct.
We use adjectives to compare two or

more nouns.
We add -er to the adjective when we

compare two things.
Just like earlier, we used the word “tall”

because we only have one noun, but for
our second example, we used the word
“taller” (the word “tall” + er) to describe that
the santol tree is taller than the mango tree.
Eyes on the screen, let us read our third

example:
The coconut tree is the tallest among the

trees.
How many nouns are there in the

sentence?
Only one, teacher.
What is it?
What is the adjective? Coconut tree, teacher.
Correct. When we compare more than two Tallest, teacher.
