600800 IDENTIFICATION OF PARTS

Rev. Z 2018-04-12 Process Specification

For compressor vanes, the unique row number can be added with the part number.
The part number shall be included in the identification. The unique row number must
be traceable back to the part number.

This must appear on all parts in the area and with the size characters as specified on
the drawing except where no identification is called for by the drawing. The marking
shall be legible on the finished part. On non-machined areas, clean area to be
marked by grinding.

Where an assembly is designed by another facility, the Siemens part number shall
appear only on the assembly.

1.1.2 Purchase order, test number, penetrant, radiograph, magnetic particle examination,
code characters, supplier's identification and inspector's marks may also appear on
the part in the location specified by the drawing. If no location is specified on the
drawing, the additional markings should not be applied to the parts. Contact the ap-
propriate purchasing agent or supply management representative for clarification.

1.1.3 Serial number furnished by the Siemens production, and when required by the part,
must be placed on the part in the area indicated on the drawing.

If at any point in manufacturing it becomes necessary to remove the markings in ma-

chining or otherwise, an inspector or operator under supervisor’s control shall record
the information marked on the part prior to removal of the markings and they shall be
replaced in accordance with one of the methods under Section 1.3, Methods of Mark-
ing.

1.1.4 Where parts are put together in such a manner that disassembly may readily be ac-
complished and where such an assembly does not carry a name plate, identification
shall be made clearly showing the part number and word “assembly” on the largest of
the pieces. Fabricated assemblies (weldments, riveted and brazed structures) shall
be marked with the part number only. This requirement shall not apply to gas turbine
rotor assemblies.

Part VII - Low stress stamp
Part VIII - Small parts
Part IX - Nameplate

1.4 Safety

Safety and waste disposal polices and practices shall be in accordance with all federal,
provincial, state and local government environmental regulations.

2.0 PART I - ELECTRIC ETCH

Electric etch is divided into two (2) methods, electrolytic etch and electric pencil. Either method
may be used with the exceptions noted below:

2.1 Electrolytic Etch is a cheap and preferred marking on machine parts where such areas will
not subsequently be covered with paint. This method may be used on most parts except
where the areas are very highly stressed. The method cannot be used where parts have
been anodized, plated and/or painted.

The marking is accomplished by the controlled electrolysis of the metal part. This may be
done through the use of a stencil cut with the desired markings, an electrolyte held against
the stencil (and part) by a suitable pad and a source of current.

The following steps are to be followed in electrolytically etching a part.

2.1.1 Clean the metal surface with the cleaner DS0055812CB.

2.1.2 Saturate the holding pad and fill the reservoir with the appropriate electrolyte for the
material being etched.

2.1.3 Check the wiring and apply the current with the stencil in contact with the part. The
part being marked is grounded while the current is applied. The depth of marking
shall be no greater than 0.025 mm (0.001 inch) but still legible. Usually, several sec-
onds application of the current will suffice.

2.1.4 Immediately after etching, the part shall be cleaned with water, and wiped dry.

2.2 Electric Pencil. This is a type of hand marking by means of an electrode in contact with the
grounded part. The resistance to passage of the current burns or marks the piece as di-
rected by the movement of the electrode.

The electric pencil marking is not to be used on blades, vanes, aluminum, magnesium or
painted surfaces. It may be used on those steel parts where the number of parts to be
marked is small, and would not warrant the preparation of an electrolytic stencil. In gen-
eral, and where convenient, it can replace the electrolytic etch except as just noted.

Process Specification Rev. Z 2018-04-12

This marking may be used on areas that are not highly stressed and shall not in any case
exceed 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) in the depth of the impression.

3.0 PART II - STAMP

Stamping is divided into two (2) methods; stencil stamp and vibrator stamp (or impression). Ei-
ther method is satisfactory.

3.1 Stencil Stamp. This method is to be used only upon those parts that are not highly
stressed. It is permanent marking made by pressing or stamping the part with suitable
tools.

The type of stencils and the maximum depth of depression must be in accordance with
good shop practice and done with suitable tools to suit the particular finish and part which is
being stamped.

In any case, the stamping shall not distort the surface beneath that being punched nor shall
the marks be closer than 2.39 mm (0.094 inch) to an edge or fillet.

This marking shall be applied before any surface treatment such as anodizing, painting,
etc.

3.2 Vibrator Stamp (or Impression). This method, if performed in accordance with good shop
practice, will produce a low stress identification. It produces a permanent marking obtained
using a vibrating hand tool that makes a series of impressions by peening the metal. All of
the requirements and precautions applying to the stencil stamp (above) apply equally to
this method, except that the vibrator impression hand tool may be used on highly stressed
parts. In particular, the vibrator impression hand tool utilized should have a generous
marking tip radius, at least 3.05 mm (0.12 inch) that produces a shallow marking depth so
as not to introduce deep or sharp impressions. Identification markings by this method shall
be clearly legible to the purchaser. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to insure leg-
ibility. This method of marking is NOT an ACCEPTABLE means of identifying human
readable (HR) Serial Numbers on gas turbine parts, blades, vane segments or Gas System
SETP (Siemens Energy Traceability Portal) specified parts. This method should not be
used to identify any type of nomenclature on gas turbine blades or vane segments. All gas
turbine blades, vane segments, and gas turbine part serial numbers must be marked with a
low stress stamp or dot-peening machine as described in Section 8.0.

4.0 PART III - RUBBER STAMP

This method may be used on any part inasmuch as it is only temporary marking. It consists of
applying an indelible ink (non-corrosive) to the part by means of a rubber stamp. The surface of
the part should be clean and free from dirt and grease. If necessary, clean with DS0055812CB.

The indelible ink shall conform to or shall be equivalent to DS0035111DU, metal marking rubber
stamp ink-marco ink black DS0034811X1.

5.0 PART IV - IDENTIFICATION TAPE

Printed Part Number

Labeling tape (such as Dymo or LabelMaker type) may be used as temporary marking of any
part or permanent marking of tubing. The tape shall be laminated, 19.05 mm (0.75 inch) wide
and the part number clearly printed in 3.18 mm (0.125 inch) high characters. The characters are
to be blue against a white background. The back of this tape shall be capable of adhering to
clean metallic, anodized, or painted surfaces. The front of the tape shall be suitably protected
against moisture.

6.0 PART V - RAISED CHARACTERS (Cast or Forged)

Where the size and type of casting or forging will allow, the part identification may be cast or
forged onto the piece in the area indicated by the drawing. This identification will take the form of
raised characters, of a thickness appropriate to the part. For castings, it should not exceed 15%
of the section thickness.

The casting raised characters are to be in proportion to size of casting. The characters are to be
located and used in conjunction with subsequent permanent stamping.

7.0 PART VI - PAINT STENCIL

This is a temporary marking to be used in identifying parts.

The color and size of stencil must be in accordance with good shop practice to suit the particular
finish and part which is being stenciled.

8.0 PART VII - LOW STRESS STAMP

This method is to be used only upon those parts that are highly stressed, such as gas system
parts, turbine blades and vane segments. It is a permanent marking made by pressing, stamping
or dot peening the part with suitable tools.

The type of stencils and the maximum depth of depression must be in accordance with good
shop practice and done with suitable low stress stamps to suit the particular finish and part which
is being stamped.

In any case, the stamping shall not distort the surface beneath that being punched nor shall the
marks be closer than 2.39 mm (0.094 inch) to an edge or fillet. Except for Bumpy Bar Code
Markings the maximum marking depth on gas parts shall be 0.51 mm (0.020 inch). For Gas Tur-
bine Blades and Vane Segments the maximum depth shall not exceed 0.25 mm (0.010 inch).

8.1 Bumpy Bar Code (BBC) and 2D Matrix

Bumpy Bar Code (BBC) and 2D Matrix are methods for marking a permanent SETP num-
ber and human readable Siemens Energy issued Serial Numbers on the specific gas tur-
bine parts.

The application of a SETP number on Gas Turbine hardware shall be authorized by the
suppliers/factories Siemens Purchasing Authority. If a supplier/factory does not have Sie-
mens specified SETP/BBC/2D equipment or if the equipment is out of service, the suppli-
er/factory shall contact their Siemens Purchasing authority for alternative part marking di-
rection. Application and implementation is part specific and is documented in the Quality
Plan for a given component at each manufacturing location. Receiving parts without
SETP/BBC/2D numbers is not automatically cause for issuance of a Quality Notification
(QN). Receiving facilities shall contact the respective Supply Management quality function
to determine if a QN is warranted. The use of a Vibrating Pencil (Vibro-peen) is NOT an
acceptable method to apply a SETP Serial Number.

8.2 Interim Part Marking

Note: The requirements of Paragraphs 8.2 and 8.3 shall take precedence over the drawing
until the part drawings are revised.

8.2.1 Parts that receive SETP BBC/2D as defined in Paragraph 8.1 require interim part
markings on all manufacturing operations except that of the final configuration. The
intent of this requirement is to reduce the number of permanent part markings to that
of the final configuration, SETP markings, Logo, and Moment Weight where applica-
ble. Implementation of this requirement is controlled by the respective supply man-
agement team. Tooling changes are typically reserved until routine maintenance of
the tool is performed. Therefore compliance at the casting stage may be delayed.
Receiving facilities should contact the respective supply management function to de-
termine affectivity.

8.2.2 The location of the interim marking shall be in accordance with the location specified
by the Siemens drawing. Unless otherwise specified on the Purchase Order, if a part
has an existing SETP part marking as defined in paragraph 8.1, and the Ship-To ad-
dress specified by the Siemens Purchase Order is another supplier and not a Sie-
mens Facility or Customer, the markings applied shall be temporary black ink meeting
the requirements of Siemens Material DS0034811X1 (water soluble, non-corrosive).

8.2.3 Markings shall be applied using a rubber ink stamp 4.78 mm (0.188 inch) in Arial or
Helvetica Font. If a part has an existing SETP number and the Ship-To address
specified by the Siemens Purchase Order is a Siemens Facility or Siemens Customer
Facility, the parts shall be permanently marked as required by the Siemens drawing.
This permanent marking can be requested to be a temporary marking by the drawing.
Interim part markings from previous manufacturing operations shall be removed such

See flowchart below. Alternate methods of applying the temporary markings such as
automated or machine application, must be approved by the Siemens assigned
Quality Engineer.

Note: Suppliers that originate SETP markings as identified in Paragraph 8.1 shall
apply temporary ink stamp markings for all markings except those designated for
SETP markings, typically the temporary Siemens part number.

8.2.4 The application and occurrence within the sequence of operations of interim part
markings shall be clearly defined in the supplier’s Product and Process Qualification

• SETP serial number (and Bumpy Bar Code or 2D, if applicable)
• Final high level part number
• Casting plate markings (if present)

Process includes rendering out-of-date part markings as “not-to-be-used” by overwriting out of

date markings with a slash, an x, or a link.

Definition of Terms

CSTS Serial Number: This is a seven digit alpha numeric Siemens issued serial number request-
ed via the CSTS system. It consists of a human readable number and when required a bumpy
barcode as shown in section 11.0, figure 1. This method of serialization has been replaced with
SETP.

SETP Serial Number: This is an eight digit numeric Siemens issued serial number requested via
the SETP system. It consists of a human readable number and when required a bumpy barcode
or 2D mark as shown in section 11.0, figures 1 and 2. Refer to section 8.1 for additional infor-
mation.

Part Number: This is the final high level part number that the part is being repaired to.

Process

Part markings is not required to be done during the Inspect & Advise (I&A) process but shall be
done prior to completion of the repair process. It is not required to perform part marking on parts
that fall out during the I&A process or if a component is scrapped during the process. Only ac-
cepted or good parts that leave the Supplier’s facility to the final customer or a Siemens facility
must adhere to this requirement. It is up to the supplier to decide when to perform any required
alteration or addition of markings. The scope of this process is to have only the SETP serial
number and high level final part number clearly readable on the component. During the repair
cycle, the supplier can determine when best to slash (/), X-out, or dash-line (--) through the non-
required markings and when to add the required markings. When there is no space on the part
for new marking then removal of markings is permissible. During the repair cycle, the supplier
can determine if removal of the non-required markings is required. Parts with markings removed
would have an appearance as shown below. It should be blended well so that the finish almost
matches with the rest of the part (Figures 4 and 5). Refer to the component drawings for maxi-
mum allowed surface roughness. However, when the part leaves the Supplier’s facility, it is re-
quired to have only the SETP serial number, high level final part number and casting plate mark-
ings clearly visible and readable. Markings on repaired parts would have an appearance as
shown in figures 12.1 and 12.2. It should be marked so that the old part markings are still legi-
ble. The important markings such as MDR numbers, QN numbers, product modification num-
bers, PCM, ECMI, etc. that may be on the part will be documented through the SETP serial num-
ber on the SETP system.
