The use of the The Coriolis Mass Flow Scale (CDW) detects the flow rate of a free-
device flowing and non depositing bulk product according to the "Coriolis
principle". A suitable external feeding controller provides the
evaluation of the signals that have been read. In order to comply with
the “intended purpose” the following specifications of the
documentation have to be complied with: If the use of the device
complies with its intended use
• the device does not cause any danger for the operating staff, the
machine and the environment.
• the device is
- in a flawless condition as far as safety is concerned
- fully functional
• only appropriate products are fed.
• the application conditions for the dimensioning of the device are
complied with.

The construction The CDW has a closed housing with an inlet for the product supply
and an outlet for the product discharge. The on-site product lines are
connected via flexible sleeves to the inlet and outlet. The measuring
device of the CDW is a revolving impeller wheel that is driven by
means of a drive motor via a drive shaft. The product is conveyed via
the inlet funnel into the revolving impeller wheel from where it is
transported to the outlet funnel and then it falls freely into the
connected product line.
For the mounting on site the device is equipped with mounting
profiles that permit a suspended installation. Upon request the device
can be equipped with a factory-made base frame.

The function The CDW detects the product flow of the product that is flowing
through. The impeller wheel is driven by the drive motor with constant
operating speed. The product flow is conveyed into the revolving
impeller wheel where it generates a Coriolis force working against the
direction of rotation ("Coriolis principle"). To provide a constant speed
the drive motor therefore has to produce a higher torque. This
change of torque is a function of the flow rate of the bulk solid and
thus is an indicator for the flow rate. The CDW permits to measure
the change of torque via a load cell. The external feeding controller
computes the flow rate from the weight signal and then processes the
flow rate internally.

The construction The CDW is manufactured in different construction sizes. The

sizes construction and the function are identical for all construction sizes.
They differ in:
• the maximum flow rate
• the dimensions
• the construction of the weighing system for the torque acquisition

The marking of the device "CDW xx" indicates the construction size
(xx = construction size).

Construction and The impeller wheel is equipped with

function of the blades the number of which varies as a
impeller wheel function of the construction size and
the product characteristics. With a
well-flowing product the blades
generate a Coriolis force that works
against the direction of rotation. For
the rotation of the impeller wheel in a
product flow more force is required
than for a rotation of an empty impeller
wheel. For this reason the drive motor
has to produce a higher torque for
maintaining the constant speed.
The upper illustration shows a possible
execution of an impeller wheel. In the
lower schematic illustration the
markings have the following meanings:

No Description
1 Drive shaft
2 Cone for guiding the product

Drive motor of the The impeller wheel is driven by a threephase current motor. As a
impeller wheel protection of the weighing system the drive motor is controlled via an
external electronics and after the start it reaches its operating speed
via a ramp function ("soft start"). As standard the drive motor is
operated in mains operation so that the operating speed corresponds
to the rated speed of the drive motor.

Any operation of the drive motor without “soft start” is not

allowed.

Description The weighing system of the CDW150, 250 is mounted on a mounting

weighing system plate that is protected against contamination by means of a two-part
CDW150, 250 cover.
The weighing system consists of a load cell that functions according
to the principle of the strain gauge (in short: DMS). The load cell is
connected to the force transmission lever that transmits the torque of
the drive to the load cell. The load cell converts the force acting into a
proportional mV signal that is read in and evaluated by the connected
feeding controller.

Overload 3 protective measures protect the weighing system from damage

protection of the caused by overloading.
weighing system
CDW150, 250
1. Overload protection screws
The overload protection screws limit the mobility of the force
transmission lever (distance a = 0.3mm) and protect the load cell
against overloading during operation. Overload protection screws
do not offer any protection against torsions or extreme chocks.
2. Transport catches
The transport catches lock the force transmission lever by means
of a fixed point, thus forces or torsions cannot be transmitted to
the load cell. Transport catches are locked to the device in case
of a transport or during works and they are unlocked during the
operation of the device.
3. Soft start of the drive motor
A drive motor that is starting abruptly risks to damage the load
cell in spite of the overload protection screws. By means of a soft
start the drive motor reaches the operating speed via a ramp
function.

Overload 3 protective measures (overload protection screw, transport catch

protection of the and soft start) protect the weighing system from damage caused by
weighing system overloading.
CDW350
The transport catch (red screw) presses the force transmission lever
against the stop screw and thus the mobility of the force transmission
lever is blocked. The transport catches are locked to the device in
case of a transport or during works and they are unlocked during the
operation of the device.

For unlocking the transport catch it has to be loosened and

turned back by at least 5mm, so that the force transmission
lever centers itself and the distance between the two screws
(overload screw, stop screw) and the force transmission lever
is exactly d= 0.3mm (works setting).

In general, the type-approval of the device ceases to be

effective, if one protective measure has been mounted
correctly or has been deactivated.

Components with Different types of protective equipment may be mounted to a device.

protective The protective equipment may have different functions.
functions
1. Components with a pure protective function
These components (e.g. covers) have only been mounted due to
their protective function. As a rule, they have no effect on the function
of the device. But:
An operation of the device is only allowed with a properly
mounted protective equipment.

2. Components with combined functions

These components have an operative function and a protective
function. For instance:
• The hopper has the function to store product.
• The construction size of the hopper prevents the operating staff
from reaching into the rotating components.

3. Components with monitoring functions

These components are switches or detectors that monitor the
closing, the position or the status of a component. As a rule, they
deliver an electrical signal that is integrated into an interlocking chain.
If one or several monitoring devices report an error, an interlocking
chain will block the operational release of the device. I.e. it
• will prevent the start of a stopped device
• will cause an immediate stop of a started device

Safety screwing As a rule, the protective equipment is tightly screwed, i.e. a tool is
required for disassembly and accidental loosening is thus prevented.
If components with protective functions are fixed by means of "quick
release" connections, at least one "quick release" connection is
protected by means of an additional safety screwing against
unintentional operation.

Safety screwing is a protective equipment. As an alternative

the component can also be monitored by means of the "quick
release" connection (switch, sensors).

Auto-tare The feeding controller offers the so-called "auto-tare operation" of the
operation device. This operation permits to tare the device, i.e. the weight
loading (= torque) of a device that is running idle is measured, stored
into the so-called "auto-tare memory" and subtracted from the actual
weight value.
The run of the auto-tare operation is described in the “software
manual” of the feeding controller.

The auto-tare operation is necessary, as otherwise the

weight value of an idling device would be falsified by the flow
metering.

metering:
• Start/stop the feeding operation
• The suitable hardware/software for the control of the feed rate of
the feeding device/the product quantity.

Pos: 8.7.4 /Information Mapping/Betriebsanleitungen/Kap 07 - Betrieb/Durchflussmessung/CDW/ grav. Durchflussmessung - Ablaufbeschreibung @ 17\mod_1263995471454_2.doc @ 265672 @ 3

Description of the The product is fed via the feeder (1)

sequence of into the CDW (2). The CDW converts
operations the torque change into a weight
signal that will then be sent to the
feeding controller (4). The feeding
controller computes the actual feed
rate and the difference (set-act). As a
function of the difference – too big or
too small – the feed rate of the
feeding device will be reduced or
increased.

For the control of the feed rate the feeding controller will compute a
new setpoint signal (6) for the drive controller (7) of the feed drive (M)
by means of a control circuit and thus influences the feed rate of the
feeding device.
The feeding controller starts/stops the feeding operation by means of
the enable signal (5).

Suitable feeding devices for the product input

• can be controlled by means of the feeding controller,
• have a working range that suits the CDW.
