B. Development of the Lesson

1. Reading of Sentences
People believe that rock music can (Students read the sentences)
make teenagers rebellious because of its
lyrics but, I don’t think it is enough to
make them go against society. “The word but.”
2. Discussion
“What words connect the two
sentences?” “The first sentence is an assertion.”

“Which sentences shows an assertion?

“Yes, and this refers to claim.” “It contradicts

“What does the second sentence do

with the first?
“Since it contradicts we call this the
counterclaim.”
“The pattern of idea development here
is the claim and counterclaim.”

Claim - is a statement or declaration of

belief, stance, or opinion.
Counterclaim - is the opposite of a claim.
It is an idea that opposes or is against a
claim.
(Students read the given example.)
Example:
We all love watching fireworks. But
let’s stop and think about the price we pay
for just a few minutes of excitement. First,
the amount of money we spend on
fireworks is absurd. The excitement is
gone, literally, in a flash. Let’s face it
what we really are doing is burning
money. Second, there is the matter of
pollution. Fireworks contain chemicals
that are harmful to people and animals.
Over the years, these chemicals will
poison the air we breathe and the water
we drink. Third, let’s consider the trash
left behind after a firework’s display.
What a mess! One would expect that those
who set off the fireworks would have the
decency to pick up the trash afterwards.
But they don’t. Fourth, fireworks are
dangerous. Some fireworks can damage
your hearing, especially the fireworks
used in public displays that give you off a
big BANG. Losing your hearing is too
high a price to pay.
“The paragraph above uses a claim and
counterclaim pattern of idea development.
The first statement is a claim because it
states a declaration or belief. And the
following sentences are the counterclaim
because it opposes the claim and provides
reason to disprove or contradict the
claim.”
3. Enrichment Activity

to perform an activity. (Students performed the activity)
