PURPOSE STATEMENT:
Located within the Scholarly Information Services (SIS) in the Services portfolio, Academic Competencies
& Digital Capabilities (ACDC) provides academic learning development support for students of all
disciplines, at all points of transition, and across all levels of study and program in order to enhance their
attainment and success. ACDC is dedicated to empowering students to become effective members of their
scholarly community.
As a central support service, the ACDC is a touchpoint for shaping university wide approaches to academic
literacies. Using evidence-based teaching and learning approaches, the ACDC specialises in fostering the
development of fundamental academic literacies and research skills within disciplinary contexts

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:


Position Dimension & Relationships:
Under the broad direction of the Manager, the Learning Adviser works as part of a specialist team of
Learning Advisers and Digital Literacy Trainers who work in collaboration with academic staff within
and alongside the curriculum to support students’ high-level academic learning development.
The ACDC team also delivers several programs funded by Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) which
are coordinated by Learning Advisers and require supervision of casual staff. This position requires expertise
in academic and higher education pedagogy, an understanding of the higher education context and
experience in working with students from diverse backgrounds.
The Learning Adviser’s work includes assisting the Manager with team leadership, the design, delivery
and evaluation of general and ANU discipline-specific training that is informed by best practice. This
includes providing workshops, presentations within units, one on one consultations with coursework
and research students, and the creation of written and multimodal online resources to students that
offer specific advice and strategies to assist them with their studies. The Learning Adviser is also involved
in leading and collaborating in various projects within and beyond SIS.

Role Statement:

Under broad direction, the Learning Adviser will:


• Deliver workshops in a range of contexts, both independently and collaboratively, with other
academic and professional staff using a variety of approaches and strategies.
• Advise individual students from all disciplines, including those from diverse backgrounds and at
different stages of their educational lifecycle, and assist them to gain strategies and skills that
enable them to become independent learners.
• Design, develop and evaluate materials and deliver workshops and in unit support, and published and
online resources, which meet and are responsive to the diverse learning needs of students.
• Develop and build relationships with academic and professional staff on issues related to

students’ academic development and work collaboratively to contribute to a range of workshops
and initiatives.
• Undertake other duties consistent with and relevant to the classification of the position.
• Comply with all ANU policies and procedures and in particular those relating to work health and safety
and equal opportunity.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
1. Relevant tertiary qualification, with progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant
experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training.
2. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability
to create and build strong relationships with faculty members and other key stakeholders.
3. Proven ability to lead and work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as independently.
4. Demonstrated ability to plan, design, develop and evaluate high quality, best practice teaching and
learning resources.
5. Sound organisational and time management skills, including information technology literacy and the
ability to set priorities, problem-solve, manage projects and perform well during high-pressure peak
periods.
6. Demonstrated understanding of the needs of a diverse student cohort particularly international
students, indigenous students and students from equity groups.
7. Demonstrated high level of understanding of equal opportunity principles and a commitment to the
application of EO policies in a university context.
