Complex Numbers Questions and answers are given here in an easily understandable way. Students
can try solving the questions given here and verify their answers with the solutions provided. Also,

they can practise the additional questions given at the end of the page. Before practising questions on
complex numbers, let’s recall what complex numbers are.
Complex numbers can be expressed as a combination of real and imaginary numbers. The standard
notation of a complex number is given by z = x + iy, where x is the real part of z and iy is the
imaginary part of the complex number z. Also, “i” is called the “iota” and i 2 = -1.
Solution:
Given,
z = 2 – 3i
z2 = z.z
= (2 – 3i)(2 – 3i)
= 4 – 12i + 9(-1)
= 4 – 12i – 9
= -5 – 12i
Therefore, z2 = -5 – 12i.
2. Suppose z = (2 – i)2 + [(7 – 4i)/(2 + i)] – 8, express z in the form of x + iy such that x and y are
real numbers.
Solution:
https://www.examsolutions.net/tutorials/exam-questions-complex-numbers/ Page 3
Given,
= (3 – 4i) + (2 – 3i) – 8
= -3 – 7i
3. Simplify:
1−23+4−2+5
Solution:
1−23+4−2+5
=1−23+4.3−43−4−2+5.−−=(3−4−6+82)9−162−(−2−2)−52=(3–
10–8)(9+16)−(−2+1)5=(−5−10)25+25–15=−15−25+25–15=−25
Therefore,
1−23+4−2+5=−25
Solution:
Given,
z1= 2 + 8i and z2 = 1 – i
z1/z2 = (2 + 8i)/(1 – i)
https://www.examsolutions.net/tutorials/exam-questions-complex-numbers/ Page 4
= [2 + 2i + 8i + 8i2]/ [1 – i2]
= (-6 + 10i)/2
= -3 + 5i
= √(9 + 25)
= √34
Solution:
z2 – 1 = x2 + 2ixy – y2 – 1
= (x2 – y2 – 1) + i(2xy)
= x2 + y2 + 1
Given that,
|z2 – 1| = |z2| + 1
https://www.examsolutions.net/tutorials/exam-questions-complex-numbers/ Page 5
As we know, (a – b)2 – (a + b)2 = -4ab,
-4x2(y2 + 1) + 4x2y2 = 0
4x2 = 0
x=0
Solution:
Given,
z1 = 2 + 3i
z2 = 5 + 2i
z1 – z2 = (2 + 3i) – (5 + 2i)
= (2 – 5) + i(3 – 2)
= -3 + i
Conjugate of z1 – z2 = -3 – i
7. Simplify: i59
Solution:
We know that,
i2 = -1, i3 = -i, i4 = 1
= i(4 × 14) . i3
= 1.i3
= -i

8. Find real x and y if (x – iy) (3 + 5i) is the conjugate of – 6 – 24i.
Solution:
So, 3x + 5y = -6
5x – 3y = 24
Solution:
Given,
z = a + ib
a2 – 6a + 9 + b2 = 4(a2 + 6a + 9 + b2)
a2 + 10a + 9 + b2 = 0
(a + 5)2 + b2 = 16
https://www.examsolutions.net/tutorials/exam-questions-complex-numbers/ Page 7
(a + 5)2 + b2 = 42
Solution:
Given,
|z + 1| = z + 2 (1 + i)
⇒ |x + iy + 1| = x + iy + 2 (1 + i)
We know,
And 0 = y + 2
⇒ y = -2
x2 + 2x + 1 + 4 = x2 + 4x + 4
⇒ 2x = 1
⇒x=½
Therefore, z = x + iy = ½ – 2i.
– 30i = 0.
3. Calculate the modulus value of the complex number −2√3 – 2i.
4. Simplify: (1 + 6i) + (6 − 2i) − (−7 + 5i)
5. If [(1 – i)/(1 + i)] = a + ib, then find the values of a and b

Expand: a2 - b2 + 2 ab i = - 1 + 2 sqrt(6) i
a2 - b2 = - 1 and 2 ab = 2 sqrt(6)
a4 - 6 = - a 2
Solve above equation and select only real roots: a = sqrt(2) and a = -

Substitute to find b and write the two complex numbers that satisfies the
given equation.
z' is written in terms of a and b as follows: z'= a - bi. Substitute z and z'

Expand and separate real and imaginary parts.
Two complex numbers are equal if their real parts and imaginary parts

b = -5/2 and a = -1
z = -1 - (5/2)i
terms of the equation are real numbers, then z' the complex conjugate
q(z) = [ z3 + 6 z2 + 61 z + 106 ] / [ z2 + 4z + 53 ] = z + 2

Z + 2 is a factor of z3 + 6 z2 + 61 z + 106 and therefore z = -2 is the real

q(z) = z2 + z - 2
The other two roots of the equation are the roots of q(z): z = 1 and z = -
