*ATONAL-not written in any key or mode
-It is defined w/ intricate and sometimes modal melodies and extended chordal
components. It demands considerable technical virtuosity from the performer the
music of Chopin, Liszt, Schubert and Mendelsson.
-"Modal&Tonal" both describes works that:
-have one defined "hone"pitch, or "tonal center" around which the melody and
harmony are based;
-have only 1 tonal center at a time, through that tonal center can change
throughout a piece.
*EXPRESSIONISM-The term expressionism "was probably first applied to music in 1918,
esp. to Schoenberg," because like the painter Wassily Kandinsky he avoided
'traditional forms of beauty' to convey powerful feelings in his music.

-Taught himself music theory but took lesson in COUNTERPOINT.

Wagner to CHROMATIC HARMONIES.

*COUNTERPOINT-the art or technique of setting, writing, or playing a melody or
melodies in conjunction with another, according to fixed rules.
*CHROMATIC HARMONY-means harmony(chords) which use notes which do not belong to the
key the music is in (they are not in the key signature). Although Bach in the 18th
century used chromatic harmony it was the 19th century composers who used it more
and more.
*Richard Wagner-was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist and conductor
who is chiefly known for his operas. Unlike most operaa composers, Wagner wrote
both the libretto & the music for each of his stage works.
*ELECTRONIC MUSIC
-The capacity og the electronic machine such as synthesizes, aplifiers, tape
recorders, and loudspeakers to create different sounds was given importance by 20th
century like Edgar Varese, Karl Heinz Stockhausen, and Mario Davidosky.
-Music that uses tape recorder is called MUSIQUE CONCRETE or concrete music.
-The composers ise different sounds that are heard in the environment such as the
oustle of traffic, the sound of the wind, the barking of the dogs, the strumming of
a guitar, or the cry of an infant. The sounds arranged by the composers in
different ways like playing the tape recorder in its fastest mode or in reverse.
*Edgar Varese-"innovative french composer" and "Father of Electronic Music"
-born on dec. 22, 1883
-Pioneered and created new sound that bordered between music and noise.
-his musical compositions are characterized by an emphasis on timbres and rhythms.
-He invented the term 'organized sound,' means that certain timbres and rhythms can
be grouped together in order to capture new definition of sounds.
-"stratospheric colossus of sounds"
-Has 50 compositions total.
-died on nov. 6, 1925.
*CHANCE MUSIC- also known as Aleatory music.
-Type of 20th century music in which chance or indeterminate elements are left for
the performer to realize.
-Aspects, such as the ordering of a pieces sections, its rhythms and movement of
the performance.
-A style wherein the piece always sounds different at every performances because of
random techniques of productions, including the use of ring modulators or natural
elements that become a part of the music.
-Most of the sounds emenate from the surroundings, both natural and man-made.
-As such, the combination of external sounds can't be duplicated as each happens by
chance.
*John Cage(1912-1992)
-born on sept. 5, 1912 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
-He challenged the very idea of music by manipulating musical instruments in order
to achieve new sounds the experimented with what came to be known as "chance
music".
-4 mins. and 33 secs. where pianists merely opens the piano lid and keeps silent
for the duration of the piece. The audience hears a variety of noises inside and
outside the concert hall amidst the seeming silence.
-Created a "prepared" piano, where screws and pieces of wood or paper were inserted
betweeen the piano strings to produce different pecussive possibilities.
