Passage 1: Questions 21-27

Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hosain was born in 1880 in the village of Pairaband in the British
colonial period, which later became the northern part of Bangladesh. Born into an upper-class
landowning Muslim family, Rokeya was not allowed to attend school, or even to learn Bengali or
English. While her brothers were encouraged to be educated, she and her sisters were not. She was
only taught to read Arabic and Urdu, in order to be able to read the Quaran and books on "proper"
conduct for women.

According to one of her biographers, she so valued her identity as a Bengali that she defied custom
and persisted in learning Bengali under the supervision of her elder brothers. To one of her
brothers, Begum Rokeya remained so ever grateful that she dedicated her novel Padmaraga to him,
who also taught her English and Bangla secretly. In 1896, Rqkeya was married to Khan Bahadur
Sakhawat Hosain, the Deputy Magistrate of Bhagalpur. Her husband was proud of her quick

intelligence and encouraged her to befriend educated Hindu and Christian women and to learn
English. Rokeya Hosain then began pursuing her philanthropic and reformist activities. She
established a· girl's school (Shakawat Memorial School) in Bhagalpur and then moved it to
Calcutt. where it continues to .flourish.

At a very early age, Rokeya Hosain made up her mind to fight against the unthinking observance of
customs, especially those that struck her to be absurd or unjust. Rokeya wrote courageously against
restrictions on women and to promote their emancipation,· which she believed would come by
breaking the gender division of labor. When women were able to undertake whatever profession
they chose, she argued, then segregation and discrimination would cease. Initially, her requests for
help in furthering women's education were ignored by the rich and influential Muslims of Calcutta.

She founded the Anjuman-e-Khawatin-e-Islamm (Muslim Women's Association), and slowly

began to win support for helping disadvantaged women. Hosain saw her writing as a means of
challenging people to reconsider some of the basic principles of their society and thereby affect
social reform. Hers was the project of consciousness raising, ,and so she wrote mostly . in Bangla.

issues affecting the Bengali Muslim community as a whole. Rokeya wrote Sultana's Dream in 1905
to test her proficiency in English. Her husband, who .read the manuscript; was very impressed. "A
terrible revenge," he commented.

grounds. Similarly, she argued for the education of women for self-realization and the fullest
development of women's potential as human beings and also encouraged women to

Passage 2: Questions 28-35

It was a rare example of Egypt doing something that pleased economists. On July 5.th fuel prices
· rose as the government removed a portion of its generous subsidy. The price of a liter of the most
· commonly used petrol rose by 41 % to 2.6 Egyptian pounds ($0.36); the price of a cubic meter of
compressed natural gas, used mainly by taxis, rose by 175% to 1.1 pounds. Despite the odd protest
and much resentment among the poor. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Egypt's new preident, appears to have
pulled off a reform long urged by the IMF and long postponed by previous presidents.
. ' ' '

Mr. Sisi seems determined to fix Egypt's ecoomy. It has struggled during the past three years of
political turmoil, which turned off
investors and caused tourism to collapse. Earlier this month he
refused to sign the budget until the finarice minister cut the planned deficit for the coming fiscal
. ··year fr9m 12% to 10%. Whether the new sums add up is not clear, but alreaqy this year gypt has
introduced a tax on stock market gains and plans to bring. in value-added and property taxes too.

'This,· plus an influx of money from Gulf countries keen on Egypt's new· regime, has led to a
cautious .improvement in investor 'sentiment. Wealthy local businessmen have been
sweet-talked or coerced 'into announcing fhat they too will be investing at home.

· Yet such moves fall far short of the overhaul Egypt's economy needs. The country had decent
growth rates from 2004 to 2011, but a lot of it was driven by "real estate rather than productive
activity", says Muhammad al-Kami of the American University of Cairo. As well as political
turbulence,. he blames a large, inefficient bureaucracy and poor education for hobbling growth.

Egypt needs to spend more on. education, health and reearch - a goal enshrined in the new
· . constitution. But much of its budgefis eaten up by subsidies, along with salaries for the sprawling .
bureaucracy and interest payments on its debt. Egypt's private seGtor remains dominated by big
conglomerates; thanks to a lack of access to capital and land, small companies struggle to grow. A
· recent World Bank study found that only 17% of Egyptian firms, and only 13% of smaller ones,
had borrowed from formal financial institutions. These are 1 hard things to fix, and Mr. Sisi may be
. loath to upset his base in the civil service or risk more discontent at a time when he is already
suppressing dissent.

28. Which of the following statements would the author of this essay mostly agree with?
(A) Mr. Sisi is likely to risk more discontent.
(B) A lack of access to capital and land is praiseworthy.
(C) The cu1Tent growth of small companies is satisfactory.
(D) Mr. Sisi is restraining disagreement.
