User's Manual of CDMS-2000 Series of Dust and Particlulate Monitor (β-ray) 1 System Overview

1 System Overview

1.1 Product introduction

CDMS-2000 can detect the concentration of particulate matter, noise, meteorological parameters, etc. It
has the functions of intelligent capture and evidence collection as the concentration of particulate matter
exceeds the standard, uploading alarm information, etc., which greatly facilitates the management of
competent departments and can be widely used for monitoring construction site dust, road dust, urban
PM2.5/PM10 and noise.

Fig. 1-1 Appearance of CDMS-2000 Monitoring System

1
User's Manual of CDMS-2000 Series of Dust and Particlulate Monitor (β-ray) 1 System Overview

1.2 Measuring principles

β-ray method refers to a national standard method for automatic monitoring of atmospheric particulate
matter and may be used for the measurement of the concentration of TSP, PM10, PM2.5 and other
particulate matter in the atmosphere.

Measuring principles: radioactive isotopes (such as C14) emits β particles, i.e. electrons, which have
strong penetrating power. When they pass through absorption matter with a certain thickness, their
intensity gradually weakens with the increase of absorption thickness, which is called β absorption. When
the thickness of absorption matter is far less than the range of β particles, the absorption approximately
meets the following equation:

I=I0e- m x m
I0 represents the count of β particles when absorption matter is not absorbed by the filter paper;

I represents the count of β particles in the β-ray passing through a filter paper with absorption matter of
a thickness of t m ;

 m represents mass absorption coefficient or mass attenuation coefficient in the unit of cm2/mg; for the
same absorption matter,  m is related to radiation energy;

x m represents mass thickness in the unit of mg/cm2

During measurement, the extraction pump extracts the air to be measured at a constant flow rate (16.7
L/min). After passing through the particulate matter cutter (TSP, PM10 or PM2.5), particles with an
aerodynamic particle size greater than the specific particle size are trapped in the cutter, while particles
with a target particle size remain in the airflow and finally deposit on the paper tape. The concentration of
atmospheric particulate matter (TSP, PM10 or PM2.5) can be obtained by analyzing the change in β-ray
intensity before and after the deposition of particulate matter. If the flow rate is Q, the dust deposition area
of the filter paper is A and the sampling time is Δt, the measured dust concentration (unit: mg/m3) is:

3 System Installation

3.1 Basic operating environment

CDMS-2000 is generally installed outdoors such as construction site or roadside, with ambient humidity of
(0%~100%) RH, power supply requirement of 220VAC/50Hz and total power not less than 2000W.

3.2 Installation requirements

Notices for the installation of CDMS-2000 monitoring system:

In general, the area within a radius of about 1m around CDMS-2000 sample injection port shall
be free from any objects that may affect air flow, including other devices that may cause air flow;

Generally, the height of CDMS-2000 sample injection port shall be within the range of 2 ~ 15m
from the ground;

In general, the CDMS-2000 monitoring system shall be placed on a cement platform instead of
low-lying areas. Besides, it is necessary to protect the power supply circuit at the base of CDMS-2000 to
prevent water from entering.

3.3 Installation steps

Tips:
The CDMS-2000 monitoring system shall be installed by the personnel familiar with the installation of
environmental monitoring equipment, and its installation process is basically the same as that of other
environmental equipment.

The installation steps of CDMS-2000 monitoring system are as follows:

Step 1 Select an appropriate location according to the working condition table. The CDMS-2000
monitoring system usually needs to be installed on a sturdy cement platform measuring 2m*2m with
a thickness of 10cm. The CDMS-2000 host and column should be installed on this platform as well.

8
User's Manual of CDMS-2000 Series of Dust and Particlulate Monitor (β-ray) 3 System Installation

The CDMS-2000 host has a bottom size of 0.6m*0.6m and should be placed on the cement
platform. The supporting column base has a size of 0.5m*0.5m and needs to be fixed onto the
cement platform using expansion bolts (see Step II for details). The supporting column is used to
install accessories such as cameras and meteorological sensors, as shown in Fig. 3-1;

Fig. 3-1 Installation of Cement Base for CDMS-2000

Step 2 First, install the auxiliary column base, place the bottom mounting seat at a suitable position
on the cement platform, and make corresponding marks on the cement platform according to the
fixing hole position of the bottom mounting seat for drilling expansion screw holes. The dimensional
drawing of the bottom mounting base is shown in the following figure:

9
User's Manual of CDMS-2000 Series of Dust and Particlulate Monitor (β-ray) 3 System Installation

Fig. 3-2 Schematic Diagram of Mounting Holes at Waterproof Flange

Step 3 Drill holes at the just marked position with a drill bit with a diameter of 16mm to a depth of
about 55mm (the casing part of the expansion screw needs to be buried in the cement platform);

Step 4 Install the M12x80 expansion screw into the hole to expose the threaded part;

Step 5 Fix the bottom mounting base on the platform, and make the expansion screw pass through
the corresponding hole;

Step 6 Assemble the spring washer, flat washer and nut on the expansion screw, and tighten the
nut hard to firmly fix the bottom mounting base on the cement platform.

Step 7 Fix all external devices (HD camera, five meteorological parameters, etc.) to the auxiliary
column and link their cables into the CDMS-2000 host.

Step 8 Erect the column as a whole and fix it on the bottom mounting base. Pay attention to making
the outlet hole under the column face the direction to be monitored.

Step 9 After installing the auxiliary column, place the CDMS-2000 host at the designated position of
the cement platform.

Step 10 Carry out cable connection of CDMS-2000, including cables and various serial ports.

Step 11 Install a particulate matter sampling rod at the upper end of CDMS-2000 cabinet.

Step 12 Install the temperature and humidity sensor of BPM-200.

Step 13 Install the cutting head of BPM-200. The overall installation effect of the front and back
sides is shown in Fig. 3-3 (excluding some optional devices).
