2. Provide an examples to each sub-topic of derivatives in power, additive/subtractive and
multiplicative rules.
3. Be able to solve the given derivative assessment.
Vision:

 After taking the CLAS, students will have more confidents encountering Derivatives in future
topic in Calculus.

LESSON 1 DERIVATIVE: Power Rule

The DERIVATIVES in calculus is computing the rate of change of the variable y alongside
to the variable x. Also known as differential of y respectively to x.
It represented in many ways such as;
𝑑 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑓
(𝑓(𝑥)), 𝑑𝑥 , 𝑑𝑥 or 𝑓′(𝑥),
𝑑𝑥

The complete formula for the derivative is:

𝒇(𝒙 + 𝒉) − 𝒇(𝒙)
𝒇′ (𝒙) = 𝐥𝐢𝐦
𝒉→𝟎 𝒉
Derivative in power rule will simply bring down the power of the variable and subtract 1 for its new
power value.
𝒅
(𝒏𝒙𝒎 ), 𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑛𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.
𝒅𝒙
𝒎 ∙ 𝒏𝒙𝒎−𝟏 , 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑑𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑏𝑦 1.
Such that:

𝒏 is the coefficient 𝒎 the variable’s power

Examples:
1. If the f(x) = x3 , find the f’(x)

𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝑥 3
𝑓(𝑥 + ℎ) − 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = lim , 𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎
ℎ→0 ℎ
′ (𝑥)
(𝑥 + ℎ)3 − 𝑥 3
𝑓 = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ
′ (𝑥)
(𝑥 2 + 2𝑥ℎ + ℎ2 )(𝑥 + ℎ) − 𝑥 3
𝑓 = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ
𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 ℎ + 𝑥ℎ2 + 𝑥 2 ℎ + 2𝑥ℎ2 + ℎ3 − 𝑥 3
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ
𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2 ℎ + 3𝑥ℎ2 + ℎ3 − 𝑥 3
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ
ℎ(3𝑥 2 + 3𝑥ℎ + ℎ2 )
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 + 3𝑥(0) + (0)2
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝟑𝒙𝟐 , 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 .

In shorter way:

𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝑥 3
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝟑𝑥 3−1 , 𝑤𝑒 𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑑𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝟑.
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝟑𝒙𝟐 , 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡 1 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡.

2. Find the f’(x) of f(x) = 3𝑥 4 𝑦 2

𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 3𝑥 4 𝑦 2
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = (4)3𝑥 4−1 𝑦 2 , 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝒚𝟐 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡.
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝟏𝟐𝒙𝟑 𝒚𝟐
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝟏𝟐𝒙𝟑 𝒚𝟐 , 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 4 𝑦 2

3. Let’s solve the function with given value, f’(5)= 𝑥 4

𝑓 ′ (5) = 4𝑥 4−1
𝑓 ′ (5) = 4(5)3
𝑓 ′ (5) = 4(125)
𝒇′ (𝟓) = 𝟓𝟎𝟎, 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒇′ (𝟓) = 𝒙𝟒

Reminder:

 Any numbers or constants without a variable alongside will automatically 0 in deriving.

 Then if the derivative variable doesn’t exist in the function’s term means its 0.

∙ 𝑓 ′ (𝑎) = 𝟑 ∙ 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝟑𝒚

∙ 𝑓 ′ (𝑎) = 𝟎 ∙ 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝟎

 But if the different variable is part of the term, it will remains constant.

∙ 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝒙𝟑 𝒚 ∙ 𝑓 ′ (𝑎) = 𝒂𝟐 𝒃𝟑

∙ 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 𝟑𝒙𝟐 𝒚 ∙ 𝑓 ′ (𝑎) = 𝟐𝒂𝒃𝟑

Deriving can be repeated twice or more. The second, third derivative and so on,
are also known as “higher order derivatives” which we will obtain by deriving the function as
how many it says. Second derivative gives the insight to the rate of change in the function and
showcasing the maximum and minimum value.

𝒅𝟐 𝒚 𝐝
Second derivative. 𝒇′′ (𝒙) = = (𝒇′ (𝒙))
𝒅𝒙𝟐 𝐝𝐱

𝒅𝟑 𝒚 𝐝
Third derivative, 𝒇′′′ (𝒙) = = (𝒇′ ′(𝒙))
𝒅𝒙𝟑 𝐝𝐱

LESSON 2 DERIVATIVE: Additive and Subtractive Rule

The addition and subtraction rules of derivatives state that the derivatives of a sum or
difference of function is equal to the sum or difference of the derivatives of the individual
functions.
𝒅 𝒅
𝒇′ (𝒉 ± 𝒈) = 𝒉(𝒙) ± 𝒈(𝒙)
𝒅𝒙 𝒅𝒙

Examples:
1. What is the derivative of the 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥, 𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑠 ℎ(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑔(𝑥) = 5𝑥
𝑑
𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 + 5
𝑑𝑥
𝑑 𝑑
𝑓 ′ (ℎ + 𝑔) = ℎ(𝑥) + 𝑔(𝑥)
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
𝑑 𝑑
𝑓′(ℎ + 𝑔) = (3𝑥 2 ) + (5𝑥)
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
𝑓 ′ (ℎ + 𝑔) = 3(2)𝑥 + 5(1)
𝒇′ (𝒉 + 𝒈) = 𝟔𝒙 + 𝟓

2. 𝑓(−1) = 5𝑥 2 − 2𝑥
𝑑
𝑓(−1) = 5𝑥 2 − 2𝑥
𝑑𝑥
𝑑 𝑑
𝑓 ′ (−1) = (5𝑥 2 ) − (2𝑥)
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
𝑓 ′ (−1) = 5(2)𝑥 − 2(1)
𝑓 ′ (−1) = 10(−1) − 2
𝑓 ′ (−1) = −10 − 2
𝒇′ (−𝟏) = −𝟏𝟐

LESSON 3 DERIVATIVE: Product Rule

I. Key Concepts
The PRODUCT RULE is a formula for finding the derivative of a product of two functions.
The Product Rule says that the derivative of a product of two functions is the first function times
the derivative of the second function then adds to the second function times the derivative of the
first function.

This gives us the formula for the product rule as:

𝒅 𝒅 𝒅
 𝒅𝒙
(𝒇(𝒙)) = 𝒉(𝒙) ∙ 𝒅𝒙 (𝒈(𝒙)) + 𝒈(𝒙) ∙ 𝒅𝒙 (𝒉(𝒙))

 (𝒉𝒈)′ (𝒙) = 𝒉(𝒙) ∙ 𝒈′(𝒙) + 𝒈(𝒙) ∙ 𝒉′(𝒙)

or in a shorter form, it can be illustrated as:
𝒅
 (𝒖𝒗) = 𝒖𝒗′ + 𝒗𝒖′
𝒅𝒙

Which is the most used form of the product rule formula,

where:

u = h(x) or the first multiplicand in the given problem

𝑣 = 𝑔(𝑥) or the second multiplying in the given problem
You can use either of those forms of the product rule formula according to your preference.
Examples:
1. Derive the function.
𝑓(𝑥) = (3𝑥 2 + 2)(5𝑥 + 4)
Solution
Step 1: In the chosen form of the product rule formula, we will mark the first multiplicand
as 𝑢 and the second multiplicand as 𝑣.
Therefore, we have
𝑢 = 3𝑥 2 + 2
𝑣 = 5𝑥 + 4

Step 2: Differentiate 𝑢 and 𝑣 individually:

𝑢′ = 6𝑥
𝑣′ = 5

Step 3: Apply the formula for the product rule now by substituting 𝑢, 𝑢’, 𝑣, and 𝑣’:
𝑑
(𝑢𝑣) = 𝑢𝑣 ′ + 𝑣𝑢′
𝑑𝑥
𝑑
(𝑢𝑣) = (3𝑥 2 + 2)(5) + (5𝑥 + 4)(6𝑥)
𝑑𝑥

Step 4: Simplify algebraically:

𝑑
(𝑢𝑣) = (15𝑥 2 + 10) + (30𝑥 2 + 24𝑥)
𝑑𝑥
𝒇′(𝒙) = 𝟒𝟓𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝟒𝒙 + 𝟏𝟎

2. Find 𝑓’(𝑥) if 𝑓(2) = (𝑥 3 − 6)(2𝑥 5 + 1)

𝑢 = 𝑥3 − 6
𝑣 = 2𝑥 5 + 1
𝑢′ = 3𝑥 2
𝑣′ = 10𝑥 4

𝑓′(2) = ((2)3 − 6)(10(2)4 ) + (2(2)5 + 1)(3(2)2 )

𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = (2)(160) + (65)(12)
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 320 + 780
𝒇′(𝒙) = 𝟏𝟏𝟎𝟎
