Back to School Magic with FDA VIII Carnival

By Amanda Moses

Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) VIII kicked off the first week of
school with a fun carnival on September 9th inside of their schoolyard.
Bouncy castles, cotton candy machines, buckets of popcorn and
music were just a few of the activities FDA VIII’s staff utilized to bring
back the school spirt for the start of term. Teachers donned feather boas
as they posed atop of a 360-photobooth while others competed in relay
races with students through a bouncy castle.
It was an afternoon of bonding between peers and their instructors as
they played games to get to know one another better.

Third Annual Twin Pines Management Softball Game

By Amanda Moses

The 3rd annual Twin Pines Management Softball Game hit a home-
run with staff at the Seaview Avenue field on September 13th.
The much anticipated sporting event brought various departments
within the Spring Creek Towers company together as they vied for the
championship trophy. In addition to the friendly competition and
social interaction, staff were treated to a delicious barbeque lunch
complete with hamburgers, hotdogs, and sandwiches.
The skies were clear, and the sweltering sun rays provided for the
perfect weather to see who would win the battle of the departments
and if the Powerhouse could continue to be reigning champions.
Team 1390’s Lori Jones kicked off the game with a stellar rendition
of the National Anthem, and then the first pitch was thrown.
The first set of matches were held simultaneously between the
bright-red rocket 1390 Team versus the thunderous strength of the
Powerhouse (Power Plant Department), while the mighty Maintenance
team faced off against the Safety Enforcers (Department of Public
Safety (DPS).
The first round of games saw the Powerhouse and Maintenance
Department earning wins for their teams. However, in the final inning,
in what the Powerhouse are calling an upset the Maintenance
Department snatched the championship. One might even say the
Maintenance Department swept up the competition by the end of the
evening.

Mexican Day Parade Kicks of Hispanic Heritage Month

BY AMANDA MOSES

New Yorkers began their Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with

the 30th Mexican Day Parade on September 15th in the Flatiron
NoMad district.
It was a fiesta to remember last weekend when thousands of
revelers packed the sidewalks from 38th Street to 27th Street on
Madison Avenue. Participants danced to cumbia while holding onto
fresh churros, elote (corn on the cob), tamales, and more. Others
climbed onto scaffolding to get a view of the parade marchers, many
of whom donned traditional Mexican attire all in celebration of the
country’s Independence Day.
The Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th,
and it marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. It also honors
Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla, a significant figure in history who
rallied against the Spaniards hold onto Mexico with folkloric dance,
religious paintings, and songs.

Delicious Delights at the Feast of San Gennaro

BY AMANDA MOSES
The Feast of San Gennaro returned to Little
Italy in Manhattan from September 12th to
September 22nd. This iconic festival celebrates
the patron saint of Naples and Little Italy, Saint
Januarius, which began in 1926 on Mulberry
Street. What was once a one day, block-long
affair honoring the protector of Naples, has
transformed into an 11-day event spanning 11
blocks in Little Italy.
New Yorkers and tourists were able to once
again enjoy the massive splendor of the festival
with delicious, traditional Italian food such as
brick-oven pizza, eggplant parmigiana, spaghetti
alla carbonara, zeppoles, fried Oreos, gelato and
more. Additionally, there were plenty of booths
selling jewelry, freshly made cigars, clothing,
and other trinkets.

Lara Active Sizzles Up the Spring/Summer Fashion Season

BY AMANDA MOSES
Designer Lara Active turned up the heat earlier this month with an embolden
fashion show on September 4th at Sony Hall for Runway 7.
Lara Active showcased a trendy NYFW Spring/Summer 2025 set of designs that
offered a wide range of sports hijabs and modest activewear. Each of the models
displaying the attire underscored why Lara Active’s work is about empowerment
with watermelon themed attire, flowing scarves, complementary jumpsuits, and
more.
Runway 7 Fashion is the first vertical platform of its kind, creating a diverse and
inclusive environment of up-and-coming designers for NYFW. In celebration of
Runway 7’s fourth season, the organization worked to donate 50% of all ticket
sales to Mount Sinai hospital for multiple sclerosis research.
Runway 7’s mission is to utilize their hybrid platform to help represent the best
in cultural diversity and inclusivity allowing opportunities for designers to tell
their own unique stories and provide a stage that helps both nonprofits and good
causes.
