QUESTION 1

1.1 What is a turbomachine? (3)

1.2 Distinguish in terms of magnitude, with reason, between the absolute velocity of water at
entry and at exit of a centrifugal pump and hydraulic turbine. (4)

1.3 How will you increase the pressure of water as it leaves a centrifugal pump? (3)

[10]

QUESTION 2

2.1 The reservoir on the 2nd floor of the Q/K building is situated 35 m above ground. To pump
water into the reservoir, a 260 mm diameter centrifugal pump that runs at 1400 rpm and
delivers 0.03 m3/s of water was brought in. It has a backward curved facing blades
inclined at 30° to the tangent at outlet. The blades are 20 mm in depth at the outlet. Using
the Stanitz slip factor (σ =1−0.63 π / Z ) of 0.78, your task is to work out the theoretical
head developed by the impeller, and how many impeller blades it has. Based on your
calculations, can the pump lift water to the reservoir on the 2nd floor?
What should the diameter of the impeller be for the pump to lift a total head of exactly 35
m, while ignoring the slip factor? (13)

2.2 After successfully lifting water to a head of 90 m to the top of Gauta Residence at DFC,
you wish to use a Pelton wheel to generate electricity for the students. Your system loses
about 30 m of head due to friction in the penstock and the nozzle discharge is 1.2 m 3/s.
The main bucket speed is 15 m/s and has an angle of 15° at the outlet. How much power
will the Pelton wheel develop if Cv = 0.96? How efficient is your system? (17)

QUESTION 3

3.1 You are required to design a two stage centrifugal pump such that it can supply 50 litres
of water every second at a head of 70 m and 78% overall efficiency. If each stage has a
specific speed of N s =N √ Q /H 3 / 4 = 38, estimate the running speed and the power needed
to run the pump.
What is the diameter of the impeller if the pump develops an actual manometric head that
is 60% of the theoretical head and the outlet angle of the blades is 28°. Ignore slip and
take the radial velocity at exit as 0.12 times the impeller tip speed at exit.
(10)

3.2 Evaluate the performance of a Francis turbine wheel that rotates at 1250 rpm with the net
head of 125 m across by estimating the torque and power exerted by the water. The
following information applies:

 Volume flow rate is 0.45 m3/s;

 Radius of the runner is 0.5 m and height of the runner vanes at inlet is 0.035 m;
 Angle of the inlet guide vanes is set at 70° from the radial direction;
 The absolute flow velocity is radial at exit.
Also work out the hydraulic efficiency of the turbine. (15)
