MGT 509: Human Resources Management

Mayor Mike Duggan and other city officials have said that unemployment in Detroit has

reduced to 7% from 7.9% in August and 12.5% a year ago, citing the September 2022

Employment Data Report released this morning by the Department of Labor Statistics. As a

result of the city's consistent development and investment in its workforce, the unemployment

rate has dropped to levels not seen in Detroit since September of 2000. The goal of Detroit at

Work, the city's workforce development ecosystem, is to provide local businesses with access to

a pool of skilled workers while also providing residents of Detroit with access to rewarding

employment opportunities regardless of their level of education, training, or experience. More

than 10,738 people have attended 61 job fairs hosted by Detroit at Work since January.

Daily, Detroiters are being employed for jobs and careers in expanding sectors like

manufacturing, information technology, and healthcare. Detroit at Work is the city's ecosystem

for developing its workforce, and it aims to do two things: increase the number of jobs available

to Detroiters of varying skill sets, and make it easier for employers to find the workers they need.

Detroit at Work is a one-stop shop for individuals and companies in need of assistance

expanding their human resource capabilities, including a network of career centers, recruitment

services, workforce insights, training programs, and strategic partnerships.

Experts believe that King Company management will be able to overcome any obstacles

to the company's growth and profitability because of the company's long track record. The

company's founding vision was to build high-quality components for the IT and computer

markets. The company's founder is a seasoned IT professional whose expertise allowed him to

construct one of the first computer assembly facilities. This new company saw above-average
sales growth thanks to significant demand. Yet, as competition grew and the IT industry shifted,

King Company saw its profits drop. The company's performance plummeted because expenses

were rising faster than revenue. The current priority for King Company's CEO is to assess the

effects of recent external developments and plot a road back to financial health.

Among the many external elements that can affect a company's output are the state of the

labor market and its expected future state. Many people in Detroit and the Midwest still harbor

resentment toward the King Corporation because of its problematic beginnings (Colby, 2019).

The high unemployment rate and the city's massive labor demands both contribute to

workplace instability. Detroit's elite often leave the city in search of more secure employment

and higher wages in other locations. As a result, a lot of companies can't find trustworthy

workers to fill their open positions. Most Detroiters are always on the lookout for better job

opportunities abroad. As a result of this tendency, the city's already high unemployment rate is

anticipated to rise even higher (Livengood, 2019).

Detroit's labor market has serious issues due to its proximity to Canada. The proximity to

other modern Canadian cities, such as Toronto and Ottawa, has attracted many professionals

looking for higher salaries and more stable employment (Marjorie et al., 2019). Thus, the city's

administration and its businesses should alter their rules and laws to make it simpler to attract

and retain top personnel.

In view of the volatile nature of the labor market, human resources departments have a

pressing need to use a number of strategies to prevent employees from actively seeking other

employment opportunities. The recruiting manager at The King Company instituted a bonus

program to incentivize and reward workers for regularly meeting and exceeding their weekly and

daily targets. It was ultimately unsuccessful because of the way it handled its staff, which
dampened creativity. Detroit is considered by Caurant and Lambert (2018) to be one of the most

imaginative cities in the United States because of the potential of its technical area. The

prospects of survival for a business are diminished when local regulation is inconsistent and has

a negative impact. So, it is critical for the business owner and the head of human resources to

realize that diversity may be inadequate among the employees. Employees need to collaborate

and explore all possible means of upgrading technology components if they lack a high level of

competence and aptitude.

Conclusion

It is clear that Detroit has great potential to emerge as a leading innovator in the United

States. Nevertheless, problems like excessive unemployment and a dearth of qualified

professionals stem from local governments that are unwilling to reform their laws. The King

Company, which was an early pioneer in the supply of technical goods, has the resources to

remain in operation, but it has been forced out of the market by forces beyond the control of its

management. This means drastic action is required to save the company.
