Complex Roots and Polynomials

1. The following statements about real numbers are all true (and well-known). Decide
whether the corresponding statements about complex numbers are true or false. If
true, prove it. If false, provide a counter-example.

For real x: For complex z:

2
(a) If x = 0, then x = 0 (a) If z 2 = 0, then z = 0
(b) x2 = |x|2 (b) z 2 = |z|2
(c) |x| ≥ 0 (c) |z| ≥ 0
(d) x2 ≥ 0 for all real x. (d) z 2 ≥ 0 for all complex z

2. Solve the following equations.

(a) ez = 1 + i (c) ez = |1 + i|
(b) eiz = 1 + i (d) |ez | = |1 + i|

3. For each of the following, find all the solutions of the given equations and plot your
answers on an Argand diagram.

(a) z 4 = −1 + i (c) z 6 − 2z 3 + 2 = 0
(b) z 6 + 729 = 0 (d) z 7 + 8z 4 − z 3 − 8 = 0

4. Find a quadratic function f (z) with real coefficients such that f (3 + i) = 0 and
f (0) = −10.

5. The complex number 2 + i is a zero/root of the polynomial

p(z) = 3z 3 − 14z 2 + 23z − 10.

Use this information to factorise p(z) into linear and irreducible quadratic factors.

6. Suppose that
q(z) = z 4 − 2z 3 + 2z 2 − 10z + 25.
Given that q(2 − i) = 0, write q(z) as the product of irreducible quadratic factors.
