Lesson 5: Listening – Vocational courses

1. Warm-up - T explains the phrase “Vocational course” for Ss.
2. Pre- - To provide Teaching vocabulary
listening new words for - T provides new words and explains the listening their meanings to Ss: tasks. Vocabulary: 1. professional (adj) 2. apprentice (n) 3. brochure (n) - T plays the audio of new words and asks Ss to repeat. Task 2: Choose the correct meanings of the underlined words and phrase - T checks Ss’ understanding by asking them to do Task 2 in the coursebook: Key answers: 1. B 2. A 3. B - T reveals these words will appear in the listening audio. 2. While- Task 3: Listen to a conversation listening between Mai and the receptionist at ABC Vocational School. What are they talkingh about? - T instructs Ss to determine the number of people talking in the audio. Expected answer: 2 people – Mai and the receptionist - T explains “What are they talking about?” is to find the main topic of the audio. - T introduces 2 steps to prepare for listening for the main idea of a listening task: Step 1: + Read and highlight the keywords in the given option + T asks Ss to follow step 1 to find out the keywords in each option of Task 3 (Let Ss highlight keywords in option A, check the answer, and then continue to the other options. Do the same with options B and C): A. Vocational schools, area B. Cooking courses, vocational school C. Qualifications, study, ABC Vocational School Step 2: + Guess information might appear in the audio through highlighted keywords. + T instructs Ss to guess information in each option: A. Vocational schools in the area (Ss might hear a lot of names, locations, how to apply, advices on choosing the suitable school…) B. Cooking courses at the vocational school (Ss might hear the duration of the course, job opportunities, tuition fees, different types of classes…) C. Qualifications needed to study at ABC vocational school (Ss might hear work experience, high school degree, language qualification…) - T plays the audio for Ss to listen to the main topic of the conversation. - T asks Ss to work in pairs to compare their answers. - T checks answers as a class. When checking answers, T asks Ss to recall what they listened in the audio, based on the predicted information before. Key answer: B. Cooking courses at the vocational school
Task 4: Listen to the conversation
again and complete the notes below. Use no more than TWO words for each gap. - T asks Ss to highlight keywords before or after the gaps. - T checks keywords as a class: (1) duration, two, three (2) courses (3) training, to be (4) work as, a(n), restaurant (5) parents, students, study - T instructs Ss to identify the word form of each gap based on the highlighted keywords: (1) noun (days, weeks, months, years) (2) adj (3) noun (4) noun (5) noun - T asks Ss to say how many words can they fill in each gap. Expected answer: No more than 2 words - T reminds Ss to pay attention to the word form (singular or plural) and these words should be exact words from the recording. - T asks Ss to listen carefully and plays the audio once again. - T checks answers with the class by playing the audio one more time and pausing at some places for Ss to listen and analyze (identify what information is the audio talking about, and when the audio tells the answer). Key answers: (1) months (2) professional (cooking) (3) restaurant cooks (4) apprentice (5) brochure 3. Post- Task 5: Work in pairs. Discuss the listening following question. - T introduces the task and gives Ss some suggested ideas to discuss: Kinds of cooking courses: - Basic cooking course (daily food recipes, fun experience in the kitchen…) - Professional cooking course (restaurant chef training, special food recipes…) - Baking course (cake recipes…) - European cooking course (European recipes…) - T explains those ideas and asks Ss to work in pairs to answer the questions in the coursebook in 2 minutes. - T calls some pairs to present their answers. Sample answer: I would be interested in a basic cooking course because I can learn many daily recipes and I will know how to cook meals for my family. Transcript: Lan: Good morning. Receptionist: Good morning. Welcome to ABC Vocational School. How can I help you? Lan: I watched a TV program about your school last week. I'd like to ask for information about your courses. Receptionist: Sure. What's your name, please? Lan: I'm Nguyen Thanh Lan Receptionist: OK, Lan. We offer a wide range of courses including tour guide training, hotel and restaurant management, and cooking. Are you interested in a specific trade? Lan: Yes, I'd like to know more about your cooking courses. How long does it take to complete a cooking course? Receptionist: Well, it depends. We have short cooking courses for all ages and abilities. They are usually two to three months, and mainly for people who want to learn about food preparation and have fun in the kitchen. We also have professional cooking courses, which take two years to complete, for those who want to train to be restaurant cooks. Lan: Do you offer any apprenticeships? Receptionist: Yes, once you join a course, you'll have the opportunity to work as an apprentice in a real restaurant and learn from the best chefs. Lan: That's amazing! Receptionist: Would you like to fill in the application form? Lan: Oh, I'm only in grade 11. I haven't discussed my plans with my parents either. Receptionist: OK, no problem. Please take a copy of our school brochure. It has detailed information about all the courses. Lan: Thank you so much. Goodbye. Receptionist: Bye, Lan. Good luck.
