Sound in Air
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this assignment, students should be able to:
1. Echo Method:
The echo method involves measuring the time it takes for a sound to travel to a reflective surface and
back. For example, if you stand a known distance from a wall and clap your hands, you can measure the
time it takes to hear the echo. By knowing the distance and the time, you can calculate the speed of
sound using the formula:
2× distance
Speed of Sound=
time
2. Resonance Tube Method:
This method uses a resonance tube partially filled with water. A tuning fork of known frequency is struck
and held above the tube. By adjusting the water level, resonance is achieved when the air column
vibrates at the same frequency as the tuning fork. The length of the air column is measured, and the
speed of sound is calculated using the formula:
Materials Needed:
- Measuring tape
- Stopwatch
- Tuning fork
- Thermometer
Instructions:
1. Echo Method:
- Measure a known distance from a wall.
- Clap your hands and use a stopwatch to measure the time taken to hear the echo.
- Measure the length of the air column and calculate the speed of sound.
3. Temperature Method:
- Measure the air temperature using a thermometer.
2. Describe the echo method for measuring the speed of sound. [3]
3. What is the formula used in the temperature method to calculate the speed of sound? [2]
4. Explain how resonance is used to measure the speed of sound in a resonance tube. [3]
