Chemical Change

Chemical changes are constantly taking place in the environment. Every day, you use
words that signify chemical changes such as burn, explode, rot, rust, decompose, corrode, and
ferment These words speak about the ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change
which is a chemical property of the substance. An object made of iron rusts when exposed to
oxygen and water in air. When you drop an antacid tablet in water, you notice the pissing and
bubbling when gas is released from its reaction with water. In driving a car, gasoline burns when
it reacts with oxygen and produces 𝐶𝑂2 , 𝐻2 𝑂, and energy to make it move.

Physical and Chemical Changes

For every chemical change that occurs, a new substance with different characteristics is
formed. In a chemical change, the composition of matter always changes. Chemical changes occur
when there is transfer of energy, change in color, formation of precipitate, and production of gas.
Some examples of chemical reactions that form a new substance are the following:

𝐹𝑒 (𝑖𝑟𝑜𝑛) + 𝑂2 (𝑜𝑥𝑦𝑔𝑒𝑛) → 𝐹𝑒2 𝑂3 (𝑟𝑢𝑠𝑡)

𝐴𝑔 (𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑟) + 𝑆 (𝑠𝑢𝑙𝑓𝑢𝑟) → 𝐴𝑔2 𝑆 (𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑠ℎ)

𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑑 + 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 → 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑏𝑜𝑛 𝑑𝑖𝑜𝑥𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑔𝑎𝑠

On the other hand, no new substance is formed in a physical change.

The following are some physical and chemical changes in our surroundings.

Physical Changes Chemical Changes

pouring of milk souring of milk
boiling water bleaching a stain
melting of ice burning a piece of wood
attracting nails using a magnet rusting of nail
sawing a log tarnishing silver
cutting paper into pieces fermenting coconut sap
breaking a glass bubbling antacid in water
All chemical changes take place because atoms of the reactants form new combinations
that have new properties and identities. This just proves that a chemical reaction has taken place.
On the other hand, no new substance is formed in physical changes.
