ATANG-DULANG MAY MUSIKA
ATANG-DULANG MAY MUSIKA
In 1987, President Corazon Aquino conferred the National Artist Award for Music and
Theatre to Honorata “ Atang―Dela Rama, wife of labor union leader and also a
National Artist awardee (for literature) Amado V. Hernandez. At that time, a rising movie
star, Gia Almonte was pegged to portray the life story of Ka Atang. Unfortunately, the
movie did not make it on the big screen because Atang refused the idea of her life in the
big screen. In an interview on Atang, she mentioned that the idea of a film may just
distort, deflect, and glamorize events which she knows to be life’
s mysteries. Atang did not
compromise herself to be “ momentarily―remembered through the film media. But who is
Gia Almonte? Was there a film project on Atang Dela Rama during the time she was
mythified as a National Artist?

DARAGANG MAGAYON
DARAGANG MAGAYON
• The myth of Daragang Mayon is a timeless tale of love that almost every Bicolano
knows. It is the story of Magayon (beautiful maiden), the only daughter of chieftain
Makusog, and Ulap (Cloud), the brave son of a chieftain from another region. They
fall in love and are engaged when Pagtuga, a jealous suitor foils their plans to marry.
Pagtuga kidnaps Makusog and threatens to kill him unless Magayon consents to
marry him instead of her beloved Ulap. To her great grief, Magayon gives up Ulap
to save her father’s life. Magayon and Pagtuga are about to be wed when Ulap
disrupts the wedding and slays Pagtuga. Magayon rushes into the arms of Ulap but
is struck by an arrow. As she lay dying in his arms, Magayon is fatally stabbed in the
back by one of Pagtuga’s men. The ill-starred lovers are laid to rest, together for
eternity, in a mound of earth that grew bigger and bigger with the passage of time,
eventually becoming the volcano that is known as Mayon.
DARAGANG MAGAYON
• Fabled for its beautiful symmetry, Mayon Volcano has always inspired poets,
painters and musicians. And, there are many works of art that depict and pay
tribute to its beauty. The legend of Mayon’s origins has likewise been told
and re-told through generations and remains very much a part of the
Bicolano culture and imagination.

MAGSIMULA KA THE MUSICAL
MAGSIMULA KA: AN ORIGINAL
FILIPINO HIT MUSIC
• For the past two years, we at Spotlight have been proud of inspiring,
teaching and mentoring a new generation of budding theater performers
blessed with so much artistic potential.
• It is with great pride that we introduce these young talents to the public
through Spotlight’s very first musical, ‘Magsimula Ka,’ which will be staged at
the Music Museum from November 17-20, 24-27, and Dec. 2, 3and 4 with
matinees on Nov. 20, 27 and December 4.
MAGSIMULA KA: AN ORIGINAL
FILIPINO HIT MUSIC
• Written by Nestor Torre and Gines Tan, ‘Magsimula Ka’ premiered at the
Cultural Center of the Philippines in the early ‘80s – the golden years of
OPM. Touted as the “first Filipino musical that works” and considered “the
longest running Filipino musical” during that time. This musical holds a
special place in our hearts because it became the launching pad for the
theater careers of Robert and me, as well as many of our colleagues who are
now respected stage luminaries.
MAGSIMULA KA: AN ORIGINAL
FILIPINO HIT MUSIC
• In addition, we also chose ‘Magsimula Ka’ as our very first production
venture because of its inspiring and positive message for the youth, which we
hope will resonate with even more fervor for today’s generation.
MAGSIMULA KA: AN ORIGINAL
FILIPINO HIT MUSIC
Magsimula ka, tuparin ang pangarap mong tunay
Habang ang lakas iyo pang taglay
Sa paghihintay baka masanay
Sayang naman ang buhay mawawala ng saysay

(Refrain)
Iisa lang ang buhay mo
Kumilos ka, gamitin mo
Kung may nais ang puso mo
Mangarap ka, abutin mo
Upang ito'y makamit mo
Magsikap ka, simulan mo
