FILM PRODUCTION
A new breed of Filipino directors were
brave enough to direct films that portrayed
revolt, labor unionism, social ostracism, and
class division. These were Lino Brocka, Peque
Gallaga, Ishmael Bernal, Celso Ad Castillo,
and Marilou Diaz Abaya.
1. LINO BROCKA
• 1983- founded the Concerned Artists of the
Philippines (CAP)
- uses conventional love triangles, rape,
and violent action which revealed the sufferings
in Filipino life due to economic exploitation
through symbols and an elaborate plot.

• Maynila: In the Claws of Light (1975) Maynila sa
mga Kuko ng Liwanag.
-1976 FAMAS awards:
-Best Picture, Best Director, Best
Cinematography, Best Actor and Best Supporting
Actor. Only Filipino film listed in Schneider’s 1001
Movies You must See Before You Die.
2. PEQUE GALLAGA
• Born in Manila and studied in Bacolod City.
• Directed the award winning Oro, Plata, Mata and
the famous Shake, Rattle and Roll 1, 2, 3, 4 and
more than 20 other films.
• Shake, Rattle and Roll is an anthology with 15
film series from 1984 to 2014.

3. ISHMEL BERNAL
• Noted for his melodramas particularly feminist
and moral issues.
• CMMA Best Director award (1983)
• Bronze Hugo Award in Chicago International
Film Festival (1983) for the movie Himala with
Nora Aunor as best performer.
Himala is about a small town, Cupang, where townsfolk believed that their ill-fated town was
suffering because of a curse placed upon the town for driving a leper away.
4. CELSO AD CASTILLO
• Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa
5. MARILOU DIAZ ABAYA
• Multi-awarded film director
• President of the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film
Institute and Arts Center.
• 2001 Laureate of the Fukuoka Priza in Japan
• Recipient of British Film Institute Award
• Muro Ami –depicts the worst form of child labor in the
illegal fishing system in the Philippines.

1. Raymond Red- 1st Filipino to receive Rotterdam


Hubert Bals Memorial grant and won the Palme
d’Or award at 2000 Cannes Film Festival for short
film Anino.

Refrains in a Song (1987) and A Legacy of Violence
(1990) which contributed a view of the history of

the Young Filmmakers Forum of the Berlin Film
Festival. Dreaming Filipinos (1992) –won best film
at Asian Youth Film Festival
