Communication?
Definition of Communication
• It is the process of giving and receiving information between a
human source and a human receiver using words, symbols, or
actions.
Importance of Communication
• To inform
• To express feelings
• To build relationships
• To influence

Senders and Receivers
• Senders
- convert their thoughts into symbols or observable signals
such as signals
- codification (language)

• Receivers
- hear the signals and convert the symbols into their
thoughts
- decoding, deciphering, or interpretation
Messages
• Ideas or thoughts that are transmitted from sender to receiver.
• Proper reception depends on correct interpretation
• Schema – culture and experience together
Verbal and Nonverbal Symbols
• Symbols
– observable signals transmitted from sender to receiver
– spoken signals, printed symbols, hand signals
• Verbal – in the form of utterances
• Nonverbal – body movements
Channels
• Medium through which the message is sent
• Noise – reduces the quality of the signal sent by the sender
Feedback
• Message transmitted y the receiver in response to the message
of the speaker
Types of
Communication
Intrapersonal Communication
• Talking to yourself
• Most basic level of communication
Interpersonal Communication
• Talking to one or limited number of people
• Dyad – two people
• Small group – three or more people
Public Communication
• Communicating to a wide group of people with very varied
traits, background, interests, and persuasions
Intercultural Communication
• Communicating with a person or group of people who may not
share the same assumptions, values, allegiances as that of
yours
Groupwork:
(4 groups, 3-5 min presentation)
• Present a situation that shows the importance of
communication.
