Background of the Study
One-fifth of the economy’s summation of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) comes
from agriculture, fishery and forestry.
Industry and especially services significantly increased their output shares as
agriculture’s output remains largely stagnant in the said period.
Asia produces more than 80 percent of the world’s coconut products
harvested. The three (3) largest coconut producers are Indonesia,
Philippines, and India.
One of the most significant crops in the Philippines is coconut making it the
second largest producer in the world.
Coconut is already the largest agricultural export product of the Philippines,
which has increased its exports of virgin coconut oil by over 61 percent in
2015 alone.
There are 3.5 million hectares for coconut production in the Philippines,
which reckons to 25 percent of total agricultural land in the country.
This coconut palm (cocos nucifera) can be found around the world.
Has been called “tree of heaven” or “tree of life” because of its uses.
1) pre-harvesting operation;
2) harvesting operation;
3) post-harvesting operation.
Dehusking of coconut is the most-difficult operation. Coconut
dehusking is regarded as the most time consuming, exhausting, and it involves
a lot human drudgery, skill, training and endurance. Traditionally, coconuts are
manually dehusked using either a machete or a crowbar making this
operation a lot more difficult.
There are many machines created all over the world to make
coconut dehusking easier, but only a small number of machines are available
in the market, some dissolved in the market, and the rest have not reached
the market yet for some reasons.
Design and fabricate a coconut dehusker made from cost effective materials
that are readily available:
Test and examine the effectiveness of the proposed machine designed by the
researchers by gathering data on its performance through the number of
coconuts dehusked per hour:
The labor cost will be lessen since the proposed machine will require a
single person.
This will shorten the time and effort of the farmers dehusking coconuts and
the spare time can be used in other operations done in the production.
The proposed machine will be more affordable than the existing ones and
will broadly help the coconut farm’s income in Palauig, Zambales.
Scope and Delimitation
The study will focus on the design of small-scale coconut dehusking
machine.
The dehusking machine will operate for only six (6) hours a day and will
be run by a 1.5 horsepower (hp) electric-motor.
The testing of the study will only take place in the coconut farm in
Barangay Libaba, Palauig, Zambales. The study will focus on gathering data
on the effectiveness of the proposed machine compared to manually
dehusking coconuts.
This study will not cover other farms in Zambales but only in the said
location. Only the mature coconut will be tested with a length of 300mm-
400mm and a diameter of 150mm-200mm. This machine will then be operated
by a single person.

Dehusking Coconut Using a Machete
Traditionally, manual dehusking was done by using a machete. This
method is risky and tedious and yet requires skills. The use of the machete
poses a great danger to the worker.

Software
The researchers will use the Autodesk AutoCAD version 2019 for the design
of the proposed machine.
Hardware
Single phase induction motor – consists of a single phase winding mounted
on the stator of the motor and a cage winding placed on the rotor.
Spiked roller – the base of the spiked roller is made from galvanized iron
(GI) pipe. The spikes are made from galvanized iron (GI) sheet shaped into
cone.
Spur gear – a gearwheel with teeth projecting parallel to the wheel axis.
Frame – is made from mild steel.
Bearing – used between two parts that allows rotational or liner movement,
reducing friction and enhancing performance to save energy.
Worm gear – a mechanical arrangement consisting of a toothed wheel by
short revolving cylinder bearing a screw thread.
