INTRODUCTION TO ETABS
ETABS [EXTENDED 3D ANALYSIS OF BUILDING SYSTEM]

 ETABS is a stand-alone structural analysis program with a special purpose features for structural
design and analysis of building systems.
 ETABS is a very suitable package for, Multi-storied building analysis.
 The entire input data may be generated either graphically or by typing simple English language based
commands.
WHAT ETABS CAN DO?
 ETABS gives very wide analysis option. You can do
 Multi storey buildings.
 Flat slab, flat plate, waffle floor buildings.
 Building with/ without shear walls.
 Steel, concrete composite framing.
 Sequential load analysis.
 Pushover analysis.
 Damper, base isolator analysis.
 Rigid, semi regid diaphragm, computation of centre of rigidity
 P-delta, non-linear time history etc….

Description of The Project
Proposed Commercial Building at Vidyanagar, Hubballi.
The proposed building is a G+4 storied RC Commercial
Complex at Vidyanagar, Hubballi. The total area of the site is
8200sq.ft.and the built up area is 6000sq.ft.. The site is located
in Vidyanagar Hubballi, Karnataka which comes under
Earthquake zone III as per IS 1893:2002 (Part 1). The size of
the columns used are 900x900mm, 300x600mm . Total there
are 16 columns. The floor height of rooms is 3.15m. Access is
given to floors by staircase and lift. This project was given to
me to assess my knowledge in modeling, design and analysis in
ETABS
Facilities:

Basement Floor Parking area, Staircase, Lift, Lobby.

Typical Lower, upper Electrical Panel Room, Shops, Staircase, Lift.

Second Floor Electrical Panel Room, Shops, Staircase, Lift, Ladies Toilets.

Third Floor Electrical Panel Room, Shops, Staircase, Lift, Gents Toilets.

Terrece Water Tank, Lift Machine Room, Staircase Head Room.

• The architectural drawing is released from the associate architectural firm and is given
to the draftsman.

• The draftsman discusses with the design engineer and places columns wherever
required and prepares the GA for typical floor level and terrace floor level.

• This is sent to the senior structural consultant for verification and once we get approval,
the design engineer starts working on it.

• We started with drafting the centerline for the GA released by the draftsman and is
imported to the ETAB software.

When the modelling is done we start adding Seismic loads, Dead loads, Imposed loads
or Live loads etc.

Seismic design shall be done in accordance with IS 1893:2002. Dead loads are taken
from IS 875 (Part 1) and includes the self-weight of the members, wall loads, partition wall
loads, slab loads, staircase loads, lift machine room loads, water tank loads and other
permanent constructions in the buildings.

Live load includes floor loads, terrace loads, balcony loads, staircase loads and lift
machine rooms and these loads shall be taken as per IS 875 (Part 2).

 Material Specifications
Concrete:
 M20 grade concrete is used for footing.
 M20 grade concrete is used for beams.
 M25 grade concrete is used for columns and slabs.
Reinforcement Steel:
 Fe500

DEFINE DIAPHRAGM

Function of diaphragm
 Diaphragm has an important role to tie vertical element collectivity, this is primary function of diaphragm
constraint in Etabs.
 A diaphragm constraint creates links between joints located within plan such that they move together as a
planar diaphragm.
 To resist in-plane shear ,axial, and bending actions due to lateral loads.
 To transfer loads from a vertical elements to the others.
 To transfer the laterals loads acting on non-structural elements, like cladding ,wall ,etc
 To the vertical load-bearing/ transferring elements through connections.
 To resist out out of plane loads. for example, load on slab, uplift pressure due to wind action, etc.

RENDER MODEL
Running the Analysis and Debugging of Errors and Warning

• After the modeling and application of loads, the model is checked for errors and warnings. Checking the
model has to be done until the model is free from errors or warnings.
• These errors may be due to intersection of lines, overlapping of lines, areas or points, etc. All the errors
must be corrected before analyzing the model. The analysis results must be also cross checked to verify
the accuracy of the result.
• After completing the analysis, the results such as reactions, bending moment, deflections for the
different beam, column sections is obtained. If failure occurs for any element the member must be
revised. In the next section the beams, slabs, columns, footing are designed according to the analysis
result.
• The sections designed must be checked for various parameters like deflection, bending, torsion, etc. and
make sure the structure is stable and safe in all aspects.
