SOCIAL MEDIA
What is Social Media? How does this affect our lives in the
present? How big is this currently? According to research, social media
is a term used to describe applications and websites that allow its
users to communicate, interact, collaborate, and share content with
one another. In simple words, social media enables us to virtually
interact with those around us. These applications most especially give
importance to communication and interaction, allowing us to connect
with someone who may be far away.
2. Social Review sites – These social media sites allow for interactions
between the customer and the business by providing reviews and ratings of the
business. These include sites such as Yelp, Trip Advisor, etc.
3. Image sharing sites – Image sharing sites and applications allow for the
sharing of images, illustrations, infographics, and more; which spark
communication These include sites such as Instagram, Snapchat, etc.
6. Discussion Sites – These sites focus on the ability of the user to strike a
conversation and ask questions. By this, users can freely communicate and
share each one’s knowledge and insights. Examples of these include Reddit
and Quora.
7. Sharing Economy Networks – This type of social media allows people who
need something to find people who can provide those needs. This type of social
media is unique as it provides opportunities for the user not found in other
social media sites. Examples of these include AirBnB and Rover.
Due to the high amounts of social media apps coming and going, people
gain and loose accounts more and more every so often. As you join/participate
new social media accounts, the more accounts you get. This is because
accounts from different application and websites do not overlap. Having many
accounts can lead to struggles in maintaining and remembering information,
such as passwords. However, companies like Google, now prioritize 1 account to
be use by a user on many different websites/apps of social media, which makes
it easier for the user to maintain. In figure 4. above, it can be seen that the
average amount of accounts per internet user has dropped
from 2019 (Average of 10.4 accounts) to 2020 (Average of 9.9 accounts). This
could be the effect of what companies such as Google are doing to lessen the
hassle of managing many accounts. Despite this, it can be observed that the
average did not drop very much, as this could also be caused by the
disappearance of some social media websites/apps within the span of 2019-2020.
Lastly, the final common behavior of
Filipino social media users is the personal
purpose for social media. It has been
mentioned that social media helps a lot in
fields of work that are in need of marketing,

just as much a work platform to a platform
for entertainment. In figure 5. on the right it
can be seen that 60% of the Filipino
respondents, use social media in their work. Other
