STEAM POWER PLANT

1. Out plant handling of coal

2. In plant handling of coal
 The out plant handling of coal is done by
1. Transportation by Sea or River.
2. Transportation by Ropes.(If mine is <10kms
distance from Power plant)
3. Transportation by Rail.
4. Transportation by Road.(For small plants)
5. Transportation coal by pipeline.(Coal with
water is made into slurry which is pumped
through the pipeline to destination)
 Coal delivery: Coal from the supply points is
delivered to the power stations by the way of
sea transportation or by pipe line
transportation or by trucks.

 Unloading: The unloading equipment

requirement is depending upon the type of
coal received at the power station.
Car shakers, rotary car dampers, unloading
towers & bridges, Lift trucks, Self-unloading
boats etc.
 Preparation: The coal is not in proper size
if the coal delivered is in the form of big
lumps. The preparation of coal can be
achieved by sizers, crushers, and breakers.
 Coal is first crushed in the crusher
 coal of proper size are separated in the

vibrating separator.
 Coal is dried in a Closed chamber by passing

hot gas
 By running through a magnetic belt conveyor

ant iron debris present in the coal are

removed
 Transfer: After preparation coal is
transferred to the dead storage by means of
the following systems:
1. Belt conveyors
2. Skip hoists
3. Flight conveyor
4. Screw conveyors
5. Bucket elevators
6. Grab bucket elevators
 Endless belt made of rubber, canvas or balata
running over a pair of end drums.

 Can transfer 50 to 100T/hr for 400mtrs

distance at an inclination 20o

 Average speed of the conveyor is 60m to

100m per minute
 Most economical method in medium & large
capacity plants
 Rate of coal transfer can be varied by varying

the speed of the conveyor

 Repair and maintenance cost minimum
 Power consumption is low
 Coal can be protected on transfer on

providing a overhead covers

 Cannot be used for short distance

 Cannot be used for greater height transfer as

inclination is limited to 20o
 Helicoids screw fitted to a shaft supported by
enclosed ball bearing.

 The dia varies from 15 to 50 mm rotating at

70 to 120rpm

 Max capacity 125T/hr

 Minimum space
 Most simple & compact
 Can be made dust tight.

Disadvantages
 Power consumption high/unit wt
 Length of feed less 30mtrs
 Wear & tear high
 Used for vertical lift up to 100ft

 Max inclination 60o

 Speed of chain for bucket elevators-75m/min

and

 Speed of continuous type is 35m/min for

about 60T/hr
 A 2 to 3 cum bucket can transfer 100
tonnes of coal per hour over a distance of
60mts
 Flight conveyors incorporate chains with scraper
bars or attachments that push the material in an
enclosed and dust tight trough.
 Advantages
 It requires small head room
 Speed of the conveyor can be regulated
 Can be used for both coal and ash transfer

 Disadvantage
 Excessive wear and tear
 Power consumption high
 Speed is limited

 Repair and maintenance high.
