WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
 5th June Every year since 1974 with theme “Only One
Earth”.
 United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging
awareness and action for the protection of our
environment.
 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment
1972.
• India played a key role - connection between
ecological management and poverty alleviation.
 WED 2020 Theme – “Biodiversity” hosted by

Colombia.

WED-2020 “BIODIVERSITY
 Biodiversity:
• Def: Biodiversity describes the variety of life on Earth.
is a complex, interdependent web, in which each
member plays an important role, drawing and
contributing in ways that may not even be visible to
the eye.
• Variety
• 8 million plant and animal species
• Example – Rice in North Eastern India.
• Diversity – Cuisine/ Gotra/ Experience and persona
 Why Bio-diversity Matters: (system)

• Ecosystem services – water, oxygen cycle
• Medicine, economic value – Regulates the processes

COVID-19
 When we destroy biodiversity, we destroy the system that
supports human life. By upsetting the delicate balance of
nature, we have created ideal conditions for pathogens–
including coronaviruses–to spread.(WED.GLOBAL)
 “The presence of a large reservoir of SARS-CoV–like
viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of
eating exotic mammals in southern China, is a time
bomb.”(Journal Clinical Microbiology Reviews in 2007)
 We are on the verge of mass extinction. Sapiens may
not even survive for next 1000 years. (Climate
Change; Pandemics; Nuke; Disaster).
 U.N. – infectious diseases are one of the greatest causes
of global mortality, and 75% of those are zoonotic in
nature.

COVID-19
 Culture of eating, smuggling exotic animals; habitat
encroachment; land-use pattern.
 SARS, Ebola (Patient Zero was 2 yr old W. Afr kid),
avian influenza and swine influenza.
 Zika and dengue viruses are transmitted by exotic
mosquitoes through trade.
 Lyme disease outbreak in NE America. (Opossum and
Chipmunks controlled lyme)

OVERVIEW OF INDIAN POLITY
 Acts are Bills that are passed by the Legislative

Bodies (Parliament/ State Legislatures).
 Rules under the concerned Acts are issued by the
Executive Authorities for the smooth functioning of
governance machinery.
 Notifications are issued under the concerned Rules/
Acts by the Executive Authorities in exercise of their
powers.
 Ex: Environment Protection Act, 1986
EIA Notification 2006
E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016
 Circulars are issued to explain certain matters which
are subjects of confusion.

OVERVIEW OF INDIAN POLITY
 Laws include everything from Acts, Rules,

Notifications, By-laws etc.
 Judiciary interprets the Law of the Land in line with
the Constitutional provisions.
 Orders of Judiciary holds similar power as those of
Laws. Example – Right to Healthy Environment under
Article 21 (protection of life and personal liberty)

Environment Protection Rules – Sl. 03 (Oil Refinery
Industries), Sl. 38 (Petrochemical industries), Sl. 72 (Oil
and Natural Gas Extraction Industry).
 EIA notification 2006 - List of projects or activities
requiring prior environmental clearance. Under
Project/ Activity number ‘6a’. Oil & gas transportation
pipe line (crude and refinery/petrochemical products),
passing through Nationalparks/sanctuaries/coralreefs
/ecologicallysensitive areas including LNG Terminal.

We are not saving nature. We are saving ourselves

Sustainable development- equilibrium
Nature has a self-cleansing mechanism. It’s just that
we have to ensure that we don’t get cleansed
Commercialization.
Competition vs. Cooperation.
Culture – Way of life.
In house of nature; hence live by rules of Nature.
