INTRODUCTION
• Bedside clinic is one of the clinical teaching methods
which is carried out in clinical area and is one of the
best methods of teaching.
• It is very lively and interesting as it correlated reality
with theory.
• It is a type of clinical teaching method where the
teacher and the students meet in order to carry out the
assessment in presence of the patient at the bedside.
• It is a teaching in the presence of the patient.
DEFINITION
• “A bedside clinic is a process in which a
clinical teacher and a group of learners sees
a patient, elicits or verifies physical signs,
discusses provisional diagnosis, diagnostic or
therapeutic options in the clinical setting”.
GABERSON
• It can be defined as a course of action
discussion, focusing on assessing the nursing
problem, arriving at possible solutions, helping
students to examine a patient’s problems from
his perspective.
• The bedside clinic is defined as an informal
discussion about a patient related problem and
free exchange of knowledge and experience
about the same, identifying management
strategies using problem-solving techniques.
PURPOSES

• To improve the student’s ability to solve

nursing problems by detailed study and
analysis of nursing situation.
• Provide a learning experience for students.
• Improve the student’s ability to solve problems
• Realize the needs for understanding each
patient
• Helps the students to do nursing observation in
an organized systematic way.
• Recognize opportunities for health teaching in
hospital.
• Work out a patient care plan to fit the needs of
patient.
• Understand certain types of apparatus being
used on patients.
• Improve the quality of patient care.
Planning a nursing clinic OR Bedside clinic

• Clinics are necessarily preplanned to be most effective.

• Usually, the patient is not present for the entire
discussion.
• Before, he is brought in to the ward or classroom, the
group goes to the bedside, one of the students or staff
nurses, who knows the patient, describes his personal
characteristics, family background, his physical and
mental condition, etc. The nursing care and the
problems related to his treatment are also discussed.
• After this initial phase, the group interacts
with the patient, asks him questions for
clarification. When he is no longer needed, he
is returned to bed.
• The discussion follows, questions are
answered in the group. The material is
summarized, important points emphasized
and evaluation done as to the effectiveness of
the clinic.
Planning a nursing clinic OR Bedside clinic

• Planning bedside clinic consists of three

phases that include:-
• 1. Preparation phase
• 2. Conduction phase
• 3. Conclusion phase
• Preparation phase: - This phase involves the following point
• Determining the purpose of the clinic.
• Selecting the patients for the clinic and determining when
they are going to be visited. Patient chosen for the clinic
should have typical rather than unusual conditions. The
dramatic and typical condition may leave the student with
erroneous impression.
• Getting consent from the patients.
• Selecting the setting for conducting the clinic.
• Instructing the students what they have to observe and the
contexts in which they have to be well prepared.
• Collecting all relevant, and necessary, patient related data
well ahead.

• Conduction phase: - The conduction phase consists of group
discussion.
• Introduction:- During the introduction phase, the students have to
be acquainted with the patient’s background other pertinent
details about his management, purpose of the clinic, significant
observations to be made and questions to be asked.
• Patient centered discussion: - During this phase, the data collected
should be analyzed, needs and problems have to be identified and
successful line of nursing management has to be outlined using the
problem-solving approach. Patients have to be given opportunity to
verbalize their concerns and how they meet a particular problem
situation. If the patient is unresponsive or tired, the clinic is better
stopped.
• Post- clinical decision: - During post clinic session, students have to
discuss the various strategies in which the particular patient can be
successfully dealt with, have to identify problem-solving techniques
suitable for the patient, and design intervention strategies for him.
• Conclusion phase: - The student and the
supervisor conjointly come to a conclusion
about the management of the patient and
prepare a summary of the clinic. The group
work together, and take solutions using the
problem-solving approach and the
responsibility to act on the problem is
delegated to one or more of the students.
Key point for bedside clinic
• Clinic can be held at the bedside or can bring
the patient to the classroom near the ward.
• Patient should have typical condition.
• Duration usually 30 minutes.
• Group of students should be small. (6-8).
• Make the patient comfortable.
• Prior permission should always be taken from
patient.
• Patient may requested to talk about family, onset
of disease and signs and symptoms.
• Patient not present for entire discussion.
• Nursing care, patient’s problems and treatment
therapies all to discussed before he is brought to
ward classroom.
• Nothing should be done to hurt patient’s feelings.
• Clinical instructor may lead the discussion.
• After this group interact with the patient and
patient allowed to go to his bed.
• Topic summarized, important points emphasized
and evaluation done by the clinical instructor.
STEPS
• Students are made to stand in an informal way near to the
bedside.
• Necessary observation of the patient is instructed to the
students.
• The nursing problems of the patient are presented to the
students.
• The management of such nursing problems is presented.
• List the patient’s problems and its management is
summarized.
• The instructor calls on for discussion.
ADVANTAGES
• Bedside clinic allows the students to prepare
extensively in advance to participate effectively in
patient care.
• It helps the students to develop autonomy.
• It allows students to select patients with disease
conditions of common interest.
• It helps the students to ably review and investigate
the quality of clinical practice.
• Bedside clinic allows the students to develop and
maintain professional competence.
• It promotes a better understanding among the
students in terms of health, illness and health
care system.
• Bedside clinic promotes clinical competencies
like reasoning, psychomotor and
communication skills among students.
• It develops the ability of the students to evaluate
critically and improve own performance.
DISADVANTAGES
• Bedside clinics may be an encumbrance to the
patients.
• Its narrowness limits the utilization of the
process.
• It may disturb the privacy of the patient.
• Results in poor standardization.
• The group can accommodate only a small
number of participants (not more than 8 to10).
SUMMARY
• Bedside clinic teaching is form of
interpersonal communication between two
persons: - teacher and students. It is an intense
personal and interpersonal experience.
• Identifying obstacles to bedside clinical
teaching will contribute to a more effective
and efficient programme.
