BIOMETRIC DEVICES

Biometric Devices
⮚Introduction
❖ A biometric device is a security identification and authentication device.

❖ Such devices use automated methods of verifying or recognising the identity of a

living person based on a physiological or behavioural characteristic.
❖ These characteristics include fingerprints, facial images, iris and voice recognition.
❑ Fingerprint
▪ Fingerprint recognition is widely considered to be one the oldest and most
Developed types of biometric recognition.

❑ Facial Recognition

▪ Facial recognition software measures the geometry of the face, including the
distance between the eyes, the distance from the chin to the forehead, and
multiple other points on a person’s face.
❑ Voice Recognition
▪ Physically speaking, the shape of a person’s vocal tract, including the nose, mouth, and
larynx determines the sound produced.

❑ Retina
  Scan
▪ Retinal scans capture capillaries deep within the eye by using unique near- infrared
cameras.
⮚Real world examples of Biometrics
▪  Airport Security
Biometric technology has been present in airports for some time. Making the journey
through airports more seamless is a goal shared by airports around the world.

▪   Law Enforcement

Biometrics is widely used across law enforcement with agencies such as the FBI and
Interpol utilizing biometrics in criminal investigations.

▪  Banking
The banking sector is another embracing biometrics across a range of services in
order to deliver a more seamless experience for customers.

▪ Schools
The US, UK, Belgium, and other countries already implement biometric technology
on school premises. It is also a growing technology in U.S. education sector.
Biometrics enhance the security and make the enrolment process more efficient.
⮚Advantages :

o High security and assurance – Biometric identification provides the answers to

“something a person has and is” and helps verify identity.

o User Experience – Convenient and fast.
o Non-transferrable – Everyone has access to a unique set of biometrics.

o Spoof-proof – Biometrics are hard to fake or steal.

⮚Disadvantages :
o Costs – Significant investment needed in biometrics for security.
o Tracking and data – Biometric devices like facial recognition
systems can limit privacy for users.
o Data breaches – Biometric databases can still be hacked.
o False positives, bias and inaccuracy – False rejects
and false accepts can still occur preventing select
users from accessing systems.
⮚Conclusion
o Biometrics can be a valuable tool for information security
o No system is foolproof, because of that it needs to be used in conjunction with
at least one other method i.e two-factor authentication
o The requirement of another form of authentication is because by itself
it will never be secure enough and it gives us another level of security.
