Open Source and Free Software

Open Source Software

• This term is refered to those categories of software whose


licenses donot impose much conditions.

• This give freedom to users to use the software for any purpose,
to study and modify the program, to re-distribute either the
original or modified version.
Free Software
Free Software is the matter of users freedom to run, copy,
distribute, study, change and improve of software.
A software which is free as well as open belongs to category FOSS
(Free and Open source software)

The Terms Free and Open represent differing emphasis on importance of


freedom (free software) or Technical progress (open source software)
Terminology pertaining to open source software :
* OSS and FLOSS : Open source software & Free Libra and Open source
software
OSS may come free of cost or with the payment of nominal charges that its
developers may charge in name of development, support of software.
FLOSS is used to refer to the software which is both free software as well as
open source software.
* GNU : This project was initiated by Richard M,Stall man with an objective to
create an operating system, but now it is not limited to only as operating system
but it offers a wide range of softwares, including applications apart from
operating system.
* FSF : Free Software Foundation : It is a non-profit organisation caused for the
purpose of supporting free software movement. Richard Stallman founded FSF in
1985 to support GNU project and GNU licenses. Now it also works on legal and
structural issue for free software community.

* OST : Open source Initiative : It is an organisation dedicated to cause of


promoting open source software, it properly defines the terms and specifications of
open source system.
Bruce Perens and Erics Raymond founded OST in Feburary 1998
* Freeware : This term is generally used for softwares which are available
free of cost and allows copying and further distribution, but not
modifications and whose source code is not available. It is distributed
without any licensing software. One Example is Microsoft Internet Explorer,
which is made available as freeware.

* W3C : World Wide Web Consortium : It i responsible for producing the


software standards for world wide web. The W3C was created in October
1994, to lead the world wide web to its full potential by developing full
potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution.
* Proprietary Software : It is the software that is neither open nor freely
available. Its use is regulated and further distribution and modifications is
either forbiddoen or requires special permission by supplier. Its source is
normally not available.

* Shareware : It is a software which is made available with right of


redistribution copies, but it is stipulated that after certain period the licence
should be paid.
Its objective is to make software available to try for as many users as
possible.
* Copylefted software : This is free software whose distribution terms ensure that
all copies of all versions carry more or less the same distribution terms. This
shields the program, and its modified versions, from some of the common ways of
making a program proprietary.

Licenses of Open source Technology :


* Creative Common Licenses (CC Licenses) : This is issued by Creative
common organisaition (non-profitable), allow the creator of the work to select how
they want others to use the work.
CC provides 6 core licenses, each of which allow members of public to use the
material in different way with certain standard rights and obligations.
* GNU General Public Licenses (GPL) : It is most commonly used license for open
source projects. It grants and guarantees a wide range of rights to developers who work
on open source projects. It allows users to legally copy, distribute and modify software.

* Apache License : It grants number of rights to users. These rights can be applied to
both copyrights and patents.

Domain of Open source Technology :


* Public Domain Software
Public Domain Software vs. Proprietary Software

Public Domain Software is free and can be used without restrictions. It is


outside the scope of copyright and Licensing.

Proprietary Software is neither free nor available for public. There is


proper license attached to it. User need to buy the license in order to use
it.
