Cells

What is a cell ?
A cell is a basic unit of life
and its comes from pre-
existing cells.

The CELL CYCLE

The cell cycle is sequence of events that occurs between the start
of one cell division and the start of the next.

Stages of cell division ( Mitosis)

1. Prophase
2. Metaphase

Significances of Mitosis Cell

Cell Division occurs all over the body expect in
the sex cells. It end product results in two
identical cells.

Itis termed as a diploid or 2n because it has

46 chromosomes

It is important for the repair and growth of the

zygote
9
Species chromosome number is maintained

Each daughter cell receives an identical combination

of genes
10

Examples of Mitosis
1. Binary Fission
2. Vegetative Propagation
1. Runners
2 . Bulbs
3. Tissues
cultures
11
Advantages Disadvantages

- Growth - No Variation
- Formation Repair
of tissues
- Asexual
reproduction

Meiosis
What is Meiosis?

Meiosis is the cell division that only occurs in

the reproductive organs during gamete
formation.
Stages in
Meiosis

Interphase 5.Prophase 2
1. Prophase 1 6. Metaphase 2
2. Metaphase 7. Anaphase 2

Important terms Meiosis

Homologous pairs - this is the pairing of each

chromosome set from the mother pairs with the
corresponding chromosome from the father.

Crossing Overing - this occurs homologous pairs join

and exchange genetic information.
15
16
Significance of meiosis

- Produces four genetically different cells, all the gametes

form are different from each other

- There is variation within the population.

- Only occurs in reproductive cells hence they are known to

haloid number of chromosomes (N)
17
Advantages Disadvantages

- Sexual It takes longer to

Reproduction reproduce.
( variation)
