Dangerous Drugs Act of 1972 - the law that was
repelled by RA no. 9165.
Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB)
• the policy-making and strategy-formulating body in the
planning and formulation of policies and programs on
drug prevention and control.
Composition of the DDB
3 permanent members
2 regular members
12 ex officio members
The 12 ex officio members are the following:

2.DOH secretary or his/her representative
3.DND secretary or his/her representative
4.DOF secretary or his/her representative
5.DOLE secretary or his/her representative
6.DILG secretary or his/her representative

9.DECS secretary or his/her representative
10.CHED chairman or his/her representative
11.National Youth Commission chairman or his/her
representative
• The DDB is under the office of the President.

Classification of Drugs
according to use and
effect
DEPRESSANTS
• Depressant substances reduce arousal and
stimulation. They affect the central nervous
system, slowing down the messages between the
brain and body.

Note: The most common used depressants are the types of Alcoholic
Beverages
NARCOTICS
• a drug such as opium or morphine that in moderate doses
dulls the senses, relieves pain, and induces profound sleep
but in excessive doses causes stupor, coma, or convulsions

Note: Opium Papaver somniferum or poppy tears, is dried


latex obtained from the seed capsules of the opium poppy.
TRANQUILIZERS
• a medicinal drug taken to reduce tension or anxiety.

High dose can cause intoxication, especially in the elderly. Symptoms


of intoxication include clouding of consciousness, slurring of speech,
unsteady gait, impaired concentration and judgment, which may lead to
accidents and injuries. In severe case, intoxication results in suppression
of breathing and death.
STIMULANTS
"Uppers" - increase mental and/or physical function. A
substance that raises the levels of physiological or
nervous activity in the body.

Stimulants are drugs such as Caffeine, Cocaine, Nicotine


HALLUCINOGENS
"psychedelics" - a drug that causes hallucinations.
Psychoactive drugs that cause subjective change in
perception,thought,emotion and consciousness.

Some drugs can have hallucinogenic-like effects in higher doses, such


as cannabis or MDMA (ecstasy).
SOLVENT/INHALANTS
• Inhalants are volatile substances that produce chemical
vapors that can be inhaled to induce a psychoactive, or
mind-altering, effect.

• Products such as gasoline,cleaning fluids, paint thinners, hobby glue,


correction fluid and felt-tip markers contain a mixture of different
types of solvents.

• Inhalant abusers may experience dizziness, drowsiness,


slurred speech, lethargy, depressed reflexes, general muscle
weakness, and stupor.

user/Abuser
Situational user
• those who use drugs to keep them awake or for
additional energy to perform an important work. Such
individual may or may not exhibit psychological
dependence.
Spree user
• school age user who take drugs for "kicks", adventure,
daring experience or a means of fun.
Hardcore addicts
• those whose activities revolves almost entirely around
drug use and securing supplies. They show strong
psychological dependence on the drug.
Hippies
• Those who are addicted to drugs believing that drug is
an integral part of life.
Classifications of Drugs
according to Legal Categories
1.Prohibited Drugs - this means that it is forbidden by law.

2.Regulated Drugs - drug is one that is researched,


manufactured, distributed, and administered under the
supervision of regulatory authorities

3.Volatile substances - Volatile substances give off fumes or


vapours that can cause damage to the brain and other side
effects when inhaled.
