Kendall’s 5-star review: I really like it here and can't believe I haven't been in before. The inside is much larger than the building leads you to believe from the outside. It's very spacious and clean and comfortable. There's several nail and pedicure stations and plenty of wait room. The staff is welcoming and warm, and I walked in at a good time when they were able to get started immediately. I chose black dip nails and my nail tech delivered the shape and length I asked for. She was super fast and made a little small talk. I'd say I was in and out in 40 minutes!! I really enjoyed my speedy session and felt like the prices were typical. They have sodas and water if you're thirsty! -
Kendall’s 5-star review: Love it here. Ask for Mandy! I'd never gotten my eyebrows threaded before and I was so scared. Like really scared, but it all turned out fine. These ladies are skilled and fast and make you feel very comfortable. It's casual and everyone is so kind. I also had my brows tinted and I love them so much! Just a little bit darker makes such a difference and fills out your brows. The next time I came I had a lash lift and tint. My lashes turned out beautiful (although the process was kind of scary for me because they literally tape your eyeballs shut and that freaks me out). But now my lashes stand straight up as if I curl them every morning, and they're nice a dark. I really don't need mascara now but if I do use it, I have super lashes! Glam India is a wonderful local business and these ladies do beautiful work. Gorgeous henna too! -
Kendall’s 4-star review: It's been like 3 years, so it's definitely time for an update! I find myself at Fixture from time to time, more so for their drink menu than the food! I do love those cranberry-brie nachos and hope they never leave the menu. If you haven't had them you need to ASAP. It's just salty corn tortilla chips covered in gooey delicious melted brie, then sprinkled with plenty of diced fresh peppers, tomato, and a handful of dried cranberries. If you're thinking classic nachos you might feel thrown off, so... think cheese plate instead. SO GOOD. My favorite cocktail lately is the Southside. Uncle Val's Botanical Gin, lime, mint... it's just a liiiittle sweet but not too much. Still nice and tart! Super bright and refreshing, it's perfect for the summer. Only $8. Fixture has a great happy hour too: select drinks and apps for $5 each from 4-7pm, Monday-Friday! The past few times I've come in there's been no one at the host stand and I've kinda stood their awkwardly waiting.. But I usually sit at the bar, so I seat myself anyway! Love the atmosphere. It's trendy and all but still feels casual, which is how I'd also describe the menu. -
Kendall’s 5-star review: This cozy Fort Worth spot makes me think of a European bistro. Inside you'll order at the counter (which is filled with beautiful dishes to behold) amongst lots of hustle and bustle. The line for ordering seems to be in the most inconvenient spot, but other than that, this restaurant is warm and welcoming with wooden tables adorned with tiny vases of fresh cut flowers. There's also a decent sized, shaded, wrap-around outdoor patio with more tables than I expected. Recently in pretty weather we sat at a little bistro table for two out front. The menu is all things homemade and seasonal. Pretty pastries, beautiful salads and sandwiches, soul-warming soups of the day, rotating fresh made sides like roasted veggies, macaroni and cheese, tuna/pasta/chicken salads, and fresh fruit. An assortment of entrees (pot pies, enchiladas, rice pilaf, meatloaf, etc.) perfect for dining in or taking home. My last lunch here was the salad and 1/2 sandwich combo. I had the Pimento Cheese BLT on gluten free toast with the wedge salad. When I tell you I ate every bite... the wedge is soooo cold and crispy with tons of blue cheese crumbles and crunchy walnuts. And the house-made pimento cheese is delicious with just a tiny bit of heat and tons of flavor. I always look forward to coming here because I know anything I get will be fresh and filling. 100% recommend! -
Kendall’s 4-star review: Came here with Jon for an early dinner on a Friday, and it was relatively busy. The patio filled up steadily, but I was warm so we ate inside. I noticed it's kinda loud inside, it seems like you can hear everyone's conversations no matter where they're at. This is a great restaurant for ordering shared plates. We got the cheese board, steamed mussels, and ceviche. The cheese board had delicious pickled strawberries, pickled curried cauliflower, dried cherries, blueberries, whole grain mustard, and a strawberry champagne sauce. Plus bleu cheese, a cheddar, manchego, and Gouda. Everything went together beautifully, a great board all around and comes with little toasted baguette slices on the side. The steamed mussels had the same bread on the side and were served in a delicious sauce. Tomato, herbs, garlic, and pancetta. It was salty and wonderful! The ceviche was shrimp with avocado, onion, and tomato. I thought it needed more acidity and salt, but the shrimp was good! Served with chicharrones. The chicharrones were mostly perfect but there were a few that weren't fried well and seemed oily/stale. They're very well seasoned, however! Staff is in masks and there's hand sanitizer around. All seemed clean and well attended to! -
Kendall’s 4-star review: The Tipsy Oak is a great spot for patio weather. It gets pretty crowded though.. even on a Monday afternoon it started to really fill up, so you know it's packed on the weekends. Nicer weather is starting to make an appearance, so expect a busy patio! We ordered an orange cider and an Oktoberfest beer, and I got the Tipsy burger (added cheese and avocado) with fries and no bun, and Jon ordered the Chicken Ciabatta sandwich with fries. The menu said the sandwich came with fried bacon, but we were still surprised to see 2 enormous pieces of breaded and deep fried bacon! Jon said they were good and he ate his whole sandwich. My burger was cooked well and had great texture, it was very juicy, but it lacked flavor. I added plenty of salt and ate it all because it was still good, and there was lots of cheese and plenty of fresh avocado in addition to the usual lettuce, onion, pickle, and tomato. All bright, colorful, crisp veggies. Our waitress was super nice but I felt bad for her because it seemed like she was the only person working during a pretty busy time. She was great though, and we had a really good time getting out of the house to enjoy the weather. -

Kendall’s 5-star review: So fun!! I love this addition to the Grapevine area. It's kind of like Dave and Busters but with old school arcade games, pinball, ax throwing, and escape rooms. They have a full bar, bar style food that impresses (friends around me were loving the wings and fries), a great happy hour (4-7pm), and a ladies night on Wednesdays. To me, the ax throwing seems to be the main attraction. It's $30 per person but it's really fun and you get to throw quite a few axes. They have ax throwing guru guys in their flannel shirts helping you out, making sure no one dies, and coaching your technique. If I throw the lighter ax and step up a little closer and don't let go of the ax too late, I can actually hit the target. I even got a bullseye and was allowed to ring the sacred bullseye bell! I was quite proud, really. It was so fun! Amazing customer service is what really makes a business so enjoyable and memorable. Everyone working here is friendly. I'm excited to bring back more friends for a night out. It's such a fun atmosphere and I never even made it over to the arcade games! Next time I'll go for some wine and Mortal Kombat. $10 for arcade games! -

Kendall’s 5-star review: Love it. Thompson's is seductive, secretive, sexy... and while their cocktails are anything but simple, their overall concept is definitely back to basics. It's wonderful to have a new bar downtown that's totally focused on quality of drinks, that's it. They've got a really beautiful menu with house-made simple syrups and fresh grown herbs. It's not cheap, but the prices aren't insane either, and I think they're worth the quality of product, service, and ambiance for sure. Probably $10-$15 for a cocktail (and there are maybe 12 pour of wine available total), but the options are really seclusive and alluring. The bar itself is extremely dark - close quarters. There's some cozy seating, couches and chairs and coffee tables; very much a "living room" essence, and pretty vintage. Dreamy light fixtures and weathered pages from old books all over the ceiling. Thompson's gets its namesake from the original Thompson's bookstore that occupied this same space in the early 1900s, so they're definitely alluding to those roots in both decor and attitude. The "speakeasy" is downstairs... I haven't been yet, so I can't say anything about it, but I do know you have to have the most recent password to get in. I love that idea. It makes it exclusive and special... you can see the blue glow from the street. I'm definitely heading down there next time. The upstairs is just so cozy that I didn't feel a reason to move. :) -

Kendall’s 5-star review: Martinis and live jazz music. A dark ambiance. A crowded room. Little tables all packed close together. Drinks only, no food! This is a wonderful little lounge and a beloved Fort Worth lounge... if you go to Sundance Square you gotta take a peek at this place. It's literally down a small alley, and then then down an elevator. An underground lounge! Feels very prohibition-y, of course, which is fun. I've been here before on weekend nights where the room fills up super fast and they literally can't let new people in until other's leave. Come early on the weekends for a good seat! -
Kendall’s 5-star review: Ironically named what it isn't, The Usual keeps you from drinking typically. Theirs is a menu that deserves admiration, careful consideration, and your enthusiasm. These cocktails demand your attention and you'll be happy to pay it! I wasn't sure what I wanted as I perused their options, so the bartender asked me "What do you like?" How wonderful that he took the time on a busy eve to discuss my palate! I said, "nothing too strong, but nothing too sweet," which is totally vague and unhelpful, but alas! I was blessed with the perfect fit; the Maximillian-aire. Reposado tequila, cynar, agave, grapefruit bitters, and ouzo. The inside of the glass was lined with lemon peel, the rim with sugar, and the whole shebang was tart and bright. There's a pretty romantic quality to the Usual. The ambiance is enhanced not only by their visionary menu, but by the intimate and dark space they possess. There's a cutesy, super small patio outside for fresh air, and guess what else? Holy Frijoles is out back! Initially I felt that bringing burritos into The Usual would kind of transmute their quixotic vibe, but it totally doesn't. It's awesome that they let you bring the eats inside! Feel free to enjoy taco time, but don't come in here and order a Miller light, okay? The Usual has fashioned unexpected cocktails from your favorite, familiar flavors, and if you aren't up for that you better believe you're ordering a top-notch brew instead! -

Kendall’s 5-star review: Go during the week! During school season, go after noon because there will be a zillion kiddos on field-trips there all morning long. I'm proud of the Fort Worth Zoo and think they've done a beautiful job. Plus they're always working on improvements and are very open about their conservation efforts. Their newest addition is an updated African savanna section with a new outdoor seating space with shops and food. Also, you can now purchase giant leafs of lettuce to feed the giraffes! I can't believe we're allowed to get so close to these magical creatures. Feed them, it's incredible. And don't forget to stare in awe at their insane eyelashes (I'm so envious). Wear comfy shoes because there is a lot of walking, duh. But there's tons of spots to sit and camp and rest when needed. While there are plenty of restaurants and little food stands, they don't all seem to always be open. Bring your own picnic -- just no alcohol or straws, of course. I honestly think they should sell beer and wine at the zoo and let you wander around with plastic cups! That's what they do in Denver... just saying! Beautiful animals and lots of staff around if you need anything. Plenty of "meet the animal" stuff going on, as well as seasonal camps for kids. I don't have any children but still love to visit once in awhile. I do always get a little bummed out at the zoo because seeing such enormous, wondrous beasts locked up is depressing. How can it not be? But I believe the animals are being treated as well as possible, and know their conservation efforts are top priority. -
Kendall’s 5-star review: Always and forever a big fan of these gardens. I grew up coming here in the summers and so it always feels like home. The gardens really are beautiful and there's plenty to see and read and learn and take pictures of. You can bring in small picnics (no big or rolling coolers), and there are several designated picnic areas. It's no longer free to get in the main gardens, but I don't mind the fee as I want to support them. Fall festival, spring festival, concerts in the gardens during the summer, the Japanese gardens... I love all of it! The staff is very sweet and pretty helpful if needed. Bathrooms are in the main building that you enter, to the left. Try to come during the week when it's quieter. -

Kendall’s 5-star review: Such a beautiful space that I wish I visited more often. As with most amazing art museums, this museum itself - it's architecture and landscaping - is an impressive piece worth writing home about. Those windows! Seriously, even if you're not into art at all, come have lunch here or just take a stroll. It's a sight to see. Gorgeous venue space for any large party you're looking to plan! The Modern has a beautiful cafe, an amazing gift shop, first Fridays with live music and cocktails, the Magnolia - which screens amazing artsy films every weekend, an incredible, rotating permanent collection of nearly 3,000 pieces, and striking, educational, and invigorating exhibitions. You must go! Now I'm not an art critic of any kind, although I did do very well in a contemporary art-history course where I studied a handful of the artists and works that live inside the Modern. But, "modern art" isn't up my alley really, although there are so, so many different styles and interpretations that one cannot truthfully say, "I don't like modern art." Really? Nothing made after World War II appeals to you? Maybe not. There is something a bit more romantic, I think, about renaissance paintings, ancient artifacts, and sculptures that have survived for millenniums. Greek mythology, biblical scenes, historical and religious commentary, royally commissioned beauties. But, perhaps the kind of artwork you'll see at the Modern has more to say. More to interpret? More to think about? It's all in the eye of the beholder. Here is a bit of my own amateur commentary on some of the pieces at the Modern that I haven't tired of viewing... I'll start with Martin Puryear's "Ladder for Booker T. Washington" because it always amuses me. It's whimsical and surreal and really makes you think about how we perceive the world around us. What is real? What is only an illusion? I love it. It's almost child-like; Dr. Seuss-y. And that triggers your imagination, the way you used to use it when you were little. A painting at the Modern that I've always enjoyed is "Jar of Olives Falling" by Ed Ruscha. And not just because I love green olives (which definitely helps). But I mean... this painting is just so oddly refreshing. It's strange and new to see an inanimate object (that would traditionally be set up on a table with lovely lighting, fruit, and flowers) just falling in empty, olive-colored space. And the olives look so delicious! It's just a painting that makes me feel happy and revivified. Something that is even more moving, but definitely not uplifting, is Andres Serrano's "Klansman." Absolutely haunting... ugh. Is it weird to be so captivated by such a simple and ill-boding print? I think that if something makes you feel, no matter what those feelings are, it's a successful work of art. I'm also a fan of Gerhard Richter's (I once did a presentation on him in college!) amazing paintings. See his "Nude Descending a Staircase" and "Ferrari" here at the Modern. They're like huge blurry photographs. You can just feel the movement in them! I'm not necessarily a big fan of abstract-expressionists like Rothko or Diebenkorn (think blocks of color and texture), but I can appreciate their talent and dedication. I understand when people get turned-off by modern art though, of course. You see these huge paintings of one solid color or what looks like paint randomly splattered ("my child could make that!"), and you think they're nonsensical and empty. But, to each their own. I recommend that you take the time to experience it all. -
Kendall’s 5-star review: I absolutely love love love the Kimbell. I'm a huge fan of Fort Worth's cultural district as a whole. Just being near the botanical gardens and museums in the midst of all the lovely landscaping is one of the best feelings ever, and the Kimbell is indeed my favorite corner. Summer, winter, spring, fall; every time of year is the perfect time to admire and absorb a bit of art and history at this intimate museum. Become entranced with another era and escape every-day-life for a bit. Maybe you're not a fan of the arts, and that's okay, but you should definitely give it a chance. Browse the incredible permanent collection free of charge! I'm telling you, the ambiance alone will enchant you. The Kimbell houses art from the third millennium B.C.E. to the mid-20th century, but the outside is a modern masterpiece designed by American architect Louis I. Kahn. It's a bright, light-filled space; simple but adorned with huge arches. It gives off a Roman-esque feeling while still being thoroughly modern! To make the Kimbell even more grand and exciting, a new building is being added, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. It opens on November 27th of this year, and it's going to be so gorgeous. Look at the pictures on the Kimbell's website to see what's in store! I'm not an art-historian and won't pretend to know more about the Kimbell's collection than I do, I can only tell you that I find it impressive and beautiful. It's a small collection, so I'm never overwhelmed or bored spending an afternoon here. And I like to become familiar with a piece and then visit it again and again. My favorite piece right now is The Torment of Saint Anthony; the earliest known painting by Michelangelo. I actually saw this painting when it was very first unveiled at the Kimbell. For some reason, it just really meant a lot to me to be standing in front of this painting that Michelangelo finished at twelve or thirteen years old. A painting from the 15th century! Maybe I'm being a weirdo, but it just feels really... I don't know... mystical to behold something like that. I can't say enough good things about the Kimbell, but here are just a couple extras... Their gift shop is fantastic, especially during the holidays, and their buffet restaurant has some amazing soups, salads, and quiches! -
Kendall’s 5-star review: Guess what! In case you haven't heard (where have you been?), Fort Worth has a drive-in theater. Yes!! If I was an uninformed reader in this situation, just hanging out and browsing Yelp, and I came across this business listing for Coyote Drive-In... I'd be so stoked. I hope that's how you feel. Maybe I'm so thrilled because I've never been to a drive-in before this one. Maybe it's because I really like movies. Maybe it's because I really like coyotes. I think it's an amalgamation... Plus, the whole concept of a drive-in theater is just so dreamy... It creates this nostalgia for days gone by, and I love to feel nostalgic! Even if it's faux-nostalgia... My faux-memories of summertime spent at the drive-in can now become a reality! Coyote Drive-In is truly an incredible venue. Here's the deal... you pay $8 for a double feature - and that's a serious bargain. Coyote plays 6 movies a night; a different double feature on each of the 3 screens. Check out their website for a daily-updated listing of current flicks. There isn't a ton of variety, no, but the cost is minimal and the experience is fantastic! You drive out to your designated screen, turn your radio station to the designated channel, and come sundown, the film begins. Sit inside your vehicle, or bring chairs to sit outside. My boyfriend and I did both! He wanted the surround sound, so he stayed in the car; I wanted a breeze, so I sat in a folding chair next to him. The best part about being at a drive-in is that you have a bit of privacy; your own space. Sure, there are a ton of people around you and you shouldn't be obnoxious, but you're not elbow to elbow with strangers. You don't have to hear other people digging through their popcorn or be annoyed with those who won't get off their dang phone! Coyote Drive-In is a lot more than just movies, people. Films start as the stars come out, but the Canteen opens at 6 PM every night! Huge covered patios, plenty of picnic tables, a stage for live music, much-needed fans, an awesome bar, and a ton of food. They've got your movie-going classics; popcorn, candy, hotdogs, pizza, pickles, sodas... and then they've got some creative additions; hummus, cheese plates, sandwiches, catfish bites, fried calamari... There's definitely something for everyone. And at the bar? An impressive and (if you can believe it) not overpriced selection of beer (some on draft, some in ice-cold cans) and wine. There's even champagne! If you just want to head out to the Canteen for great food and drinks (or to watch a game on their big TV's), you totally can. If you want to stay for one movie and duck out before the second, no problemo. Coyote Drive-In is a completely laid back and comfortable environment for everybody. It's the kind of place that's meant to slow you down a little bit. Sit back. Relax. Enjoy the view of the city. Drink a cold beer. Laugh with you buddies, your girlfriend, your kids, your dad, your dog... Support a brilliant local business with your patronage and splurge on extra buttery popcorn. Do you feel it? The nostalgia! I think Coyote Drive-In will become a quickly beloved and long-lived harbor in Fort Worth, and I'm so happy to have it near home.
