Atlantic Summary

Atlantic, Iowa is a city located in Cass County, Iowa, United States. The population was 7,112 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cass County. Atlantic is part of the Atlantic Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Cass County.

History

The city of Atlantic was founded in 1868 by the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the Atlantic Ocean. The first post office was established in 1869.

The city was incorporated in 1876

Economy

The economy of Atlantic is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including the Atlantic Casket Company, the Atlantic Manufacturing Company, and the Atlantic Canning Company.
The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

As of the census of 2010, there were 7,112 people, 2,845 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,711.2 people per square mile (661.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
