Bellevue Summary
Bellevue is a city located in Jackson County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Mississippi River, just south of Dubuque. The population was 2,867 at the 2010 census.
History
Bellevue was founded in 1835 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the French word for “beautiful view” due to its location on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The first post office was established in 1837.
In 1845, the first bridge across the Mississippi River was built at Bellevue. This bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1851, but was replaced by a new bridge in 1853. This bridge was destroyed by a tornado in 1856, but was again replaced by a new bridge in 1858.
The first railroad line to cross the Mississippi River at Bellevue was the Chicago, Dubuque and Minnesota Railroad in 1867. This line was later acquired by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad.
Bellevue was incorporated as a city in 1871
Geography
Bellevue is located at 42°25′45″N 90°37′45″W (42.429167, -90.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Bellevue’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including John Deere, Tyson Foods, and the Bellevue Manufacturing Company.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,867 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,310.5 people per square mile (505.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 535.2 per square mile (206.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
