Hiawatha was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from New York. The city was named after the famous Native American leader, Hiawatha. The city was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Hiawatha was a major railroad hub, with the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (the Milwaukee Road) running through the city. The Milwaukee Road was the first railroad to reach Hiawatha, and it was instrumental in the city's growth.

Hiawatha is located at 41°59'25" North, 91°30'45" West (41.990278, -91.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
