Combust is a basic Magic ability and one of two burn abilities for the Magic skill, the other being Lesser Combust (which Combust replaces at level 20 Magic). It shares a cooldown with Fragmentation Shot.
Usage[edit | edit source]
When activated the target takes damage over six seconds, dealing five hits that total to 125–155% of active spell damage if the target is in the game square where they were at the time when the ability was activated. Any hits caused by Combust in other game squares deal double the damage. As there is a delay between the activation and the first hit, it is possible to have all five hits doubled when activated on an already moving target. The percentage is decided on the first hit, and each subsequent hit will deal the same damage as the first.
If Combust is used within 10.2 seconds of having used the Wrack and Ruin ability, Combust's duration is extended by two hits for each Ruin stack.
If the player is wearing Kerapac's wrist wraps and uses Dragon Breath, a self-inflicted invisible buff will activate, in which if the player uses Combust six seconds after using Dragon Breath, Combust will immediately apply all five hits onto the target with an additional 25% damage bonus. If the player is using Enhanced Kerapac's wrist wraps while having Enchantment of flames unlocked, it will deal an additional 40% damage instead. It is common to wear the wrist wraps, use Dragon Breath and then Combust-drag or walk the target for additional damage. Combust can be used before Dragon Breath while wearing the wraps, but doing so this way will only apply the instant hit and damage bonus to the remaining hits that were not applied yet. This effect does not work in PvP.
If the player has the Conflagrate buff, which is a 15 second buff that is gained from using the Roar of Awakening's special attack, the damage is boosted by 40%.
Unlike normal abilities, damage over time effects are not affected by:
- Damage boosting prayers and ancient curses (aside from their accuracy bonus)
- Damage boosting abilities: Berserk, Death's Swiftness, and Sunshine (with the exception of Metamorphosis)
- Zaros Godsword's special attack
- Berserker's Fury relic power
- Most perks affecting variable damage, including Genocidal, Precise, and Ruthless
- Some items from the slayer (effect) groups, including: tuned Bane equipment, Salve amulet (e), Demon slayer equipment, Darklight
- Critical strikes
- Slayer helmet and its variants
Damage over time effects are only affected by some modifiers, including:
- Damage bonus from equipment
- Visible combat skill boosts, from potions or other sources
- Vulnerability or its lesser form, Curse
- The Eruptive perk
- The Equilibrium aura
- Berserker, Reckless, and Maniacal auras - however, while inside the effects of Berserk, Death's Swiftness, or Sunshine, the aura's invisible boost is negated
- Mahjarrat and Dark magic auras - regardless of being inside the effects of Berserk, Death's Swiftness, or Sunshine
- Among the Dragon slayer, Demon slayer, and Undead slayer effect groups, only the slayer perks and slayer abilities affect bleeds
- Scrimshaws
- Icy Precision effect granted by Wen arrows
- Greater Flow effect granted by Greater Sonic Wave - applies its boost to all hits of a damage over time ability if the buff is active when the ability is cast, and gaining or losing the buff while the ability is dealing its damage will not modify the damage.
Interactions[edit | edit source]
Combust has the highest number of interactions with other items, spells, abilities, and upgrades.
Song of Destruction - the set effect of the Roar of Awakening and Ode to Deceit
- With at least 1 Essence Corruption stack - Damage-over-time abilities have a 30% chance to deal all of their hitsplats immediately and remove their cooldown.
- With 2 items equipped - Damage-over-time abilities deal 30% increased damage
Soulfire - the special attack of the Roar of Awakening
- The player's next Combust within 15 seconds deals 40% increased damage.
Wrack and Ruin - the upgraded version of the Wrack ability when Exsanguinate is used to gain 12 stacks of Blood Tithe
- The player's next Combust within 10.2 seconds deals 2 additional hits per target hit by Wrack and Ruin. Multiple targets can only be hit by Wrack and Ruin through the use of Greater Chain.
Kerapac's Wrist Wraps - and their enhanced version
- The player's next Combust within 6 seconds of using the Dragon Breath ability deals 25% increased damage and deal all of their hitsplats immediately.
Enchantment of Flames - upgrade to the Enhanced Kerapac's Wrist Wraps.
- Increases the effect of Kerapac's Wrist Wraps to 40% increased damage.
Lunging - perk
- Increases the base damage of this ability by 6% per rank, but moving the target only deals 1.5x increased damage instead of double.
If all of these effects are active, Combust will deal 134% increased damage for 7 hits immediately, or an average of 459% ability damage.
PvP Tactics[edit | edit source]
- Although not obvious, Combust could be combined with Asphyxiate to increase the chance of killing your opponent. However, this should only be done after they have moved, as Asphyxiate will keep them in place and prevent the double damage.
Counter-tactics[edit | edit source]
- Due to its low damage nature, ignoring it is actually the best method as long as you do not move. Freedom is not recommended as it should be used to break free from stuns.
