An old tome is a reward from the Meeting History quest. The tome contains three "chapters", each of which can be used to raise a skill over level 25. The first two chapters each give 1,000 experience, while the third yields 500 experience. Note that it is also bankable, unlike an experience lamp. When read, you get the message "There are a variety of chapters offering knowledge on different skills. Choose what to read and choose it wisely."
