Best baby shower decorations
If you are hosting a baby shower or throwing one for a mum-to-be, you might be wondering what you need and how to prepare for it. Putting baby shower decorations up is one of the things that can help to make the event feel extra-special.
What is a baby shower?
A baby shower is generally a party for a mum-to-be that is usually thrown quite close to her due date, and at which she is given presents for herself and the baby. It’s usually attended by female friends and family members but this is not always the case. Different countries and cultures have their own traditions but the baby shower format we’re most familiar with in the UK is a relatively recent import from the USA.
Home-based parties might involve fun games, themes and activities, as well as food and drink. Baby showers can also be held at different venues, with spas and salons being increasingly popular for a bit of pregnancy pampering.
When should you have a baby shower?
There are no hard and fast rules about when you should have a baby shower but it is often held in the third trimester – at a point when the due date is getting closer but not so close that it’s touch and go whether Baby decides to put in a personal appearance! 4-6 weeks before the due date is a quite common choice.
How to plan a baby shower
Some mums-to-be host their own baby shower or are hands-on with the planning, but it’s traditional for close friends or family members to throw the baby shower on their behalf. One important piece of advice is to plan ahead and get invites out in plenty of time, to make sure people are available.
You will need to decide on a venue and book it out if it’s not at somebody’s home. Decide on a theme if you want it to be something a little out of the usual. Baby shower decorations and tasty treats can help make the day a success.

What do you need for a baby shower?
The first thing you need for a baby shower is a date and location. Even if you are throwing the baby shower on behalf of the mum-to-be, you should consult with them on the date and check if there’s anything that they particularly want from the event itself.
You will probably have a budget to stick to, which might also depend on whether a number of people are co-hosting and/or contributing to costs. You will need a venue, which will often be at somebody’s home but could be in a home or garden (depending on the weather), a private room or hall in a venue, a spa, bar or restaurant.
If you are catering yourselves, you will want scrummy snacks and a baby shower cake or multiple sweet treats like cupcakes might be involved! Bearing in mind that the mum-to-be won’t be drinking, alcohol-free mocktails or afternoon tea can be a good idea.
How to decorate for a baby shower
You don’t have to go overboard when decorating for a baby shower - there are plenty of other things you need to buy before Baby arrives, after all. On the other hand, if you want to go all out, just go for it. A baby shower should be a very special occasion, so it depends on your own preferences.
You might, for example, want hangings, banners, balloons and free-standing baby shower decorations all over the place. You might also want baby shower table decorations such as tablecloths, paper plates and cupcake toppers.
One thing you might want to think of is your colour scheme. If you know the sex of the baby and want everyone else to know, you might want to go the traditional pink or blue. Some people have recently started combining baby showers and gender reveal parties. If you’re waiting for a surprise, keeping it a secret or just want to stay gender-neutral, however, there are plenty of neutral and unisex colour options.
If you’re not sure where to buy baby shower decorations or simply want to keep your budget down, you might want to make your own DIY baby shower decorations. There are plenty of baby shower décor ideas to be found online but there are also loads of fun baby shower decorations to buy that can help your party go with a swing.
